Gauge symmetry of the 3BF theory for a generic Lie 3-group

The higher category theory can be employed to generalize the BF action to the so-called 3BF action, by passing from the notion of a gauge group to the notion of a gauge 3-group. In this work we determine the full gauge symmetry of the 3BF action. To that end, the complete Hamiltonian analysis of the 3BF action for an arbitrary semistrict Lie 3-group is performed, by using the Dirac procedure. This analysis is the first step towards a canonical quantization of a 3BF theory. This is an important stepping-stone for the quantization of the complete Standard Model of elementary particles coupled to Einstein-Cartan gravity, formulated as a 3BF action with suitable simplicity constraints. We show that the resulting gauge symmetry group consists of the already familiar G-, H-, and L-gauge transformations, as well as additional M- and N-gauge transformations, which have not been discussed in the existing literature.

Topological invariant of 4-manifolds based on a 3-group

We study a generalization of a 4-dimensional BF-theory in the context of higher gauge theory. We construct a triangulation independent topological state sum Z, based on the classical 3BF action for a general 3-group and a 4-dimensional spacetime manifold. This state sum coincides with Porter's TQFT for d=4 and n=3. In order to verify that the constructed state sum is a topological invariant of the underlying 4-dimensional manifold, its behavior under Pachner moves is analyzed, and it is obtained that the state sum Z remains the same. This paper is a generalization of the work done by Girelli, Pfeiffer, and Popescu for the case of state sum based on the classical 2BF action with the underlying 2-group structure.

Causal orders, quantum circuits and spacetime: distinguishing between definite and superposed causal orders

We study the notion of causal orders for the cases of (classical and quantum) circuits and spacetime events. We show that every circuit can be immersed into a classical spacetime, preserving the compatibility between the two causal structures. Using the process matrix formalism, we analyse the realisations of the quantum switch using 4 and 3 spacetime events in classical spacetimes with fixed causal orders, and the realisation of a gravitational switch with only 2 spacetime events that features superpositions of different gravitational field configurations and their respective causal orders. We show that the current quantum switch experimental implementations do not feature superpositions of causal orders between spacetime events, and that these superpositions can only occur in the context of superposed gravitational fields. We also discuss a recently introduced operational notion of an event, which does allow for superpositions of respective causal orders in flat spacetime quantum switch implementations. We construct two observables that can distinguish between the quantum switch realisations in classical spacetimes, and gravitational switch implementations in superposed spacetimes. Finally, we discuss our results in the light of the modern relational approach to physics.

Construction and examples of higher gauge theories

We provide several examples of higher gauge theories, constructed as generalizations of a BF model to 2BF and 3BF models with constraints. Using the framework of higher category theory, we introduce appropriate 2-groups and 3-groups, and construct the actions for the corresponding constrained 2BF and 3BF theories. In this way, we can construct actions which describe the correct dynamics of Yang-Mills, Klein-Gordon, Dirac, Weyl, and Majorana fields coupled to Einstein-Cartan gravity. Each action is naturally split into a topological sector and a sector with simplicity constraints. The properties of the higher gauge group structure opens up a possibility of a nontrivial unification of all fields.

Hamiltonian Analysis for the Scalar Electrodynamics as 3BF Theory

The higher category theory can be employed to generalize the BF action to the so-called 3BF action, by passing from the notion of a gauge group to the notion of a gauge 3-group. The theory of scalar electrodynamics coupled to Einstein-Cartan gravity can be formulated as a constrained 3BF theory for a specific choice of the gauge 3-group. The complete Hamiltonian analysis of the 3BF action for the choice of a Lie 3-group corresponding to scalar electrodynamics is performed. This analysis is the first step towards a canonical quantization of a 3BF theory, an important stepping stone for the quantization of the complete scalar electrodynamics coupled to Einstein-Cartan gravity formulated as a 3BF action with suitable simplicity constraints. It is shown that the resulting dynamic constraints eliminate all propagating degrees of freedom, i.e., the 3BF theory for this choice of a 3-group is a topological field theory, as expected.

Causal Dynamical Triangulations in the Spincube Model of Quantum Gravity

We study the implications of the simplicity constraint in the spincube model of quantum gravity. By relating the edge-lengths to the integer areas of triangles, the simplicity constraint imposes very strong restrictions between them, ultimately leading to a requirement that all 4-simplices in the triangulation must be almost mutually identical. As a surprising and unexpected consequence of this property, one can obtain the CDT state sum as a special case of the spincube state sum. This relationship brings new insight into the long-standing problem of the relationship between the spinfoam approach and the CDT approach to quantum gravity. In particular, it turns out that the spincube model contains properties of both approaches, providing a single unifying framework for their analysis and comparison. In addition, the spincube state sum also contains some other special cases, very similar but not equivalent to the CDT state sum.

Hamiltonian analysis of the BFCG theory for the Poincare 2-group

We perform the full Hamiltonian analysis of the topological BFCG action based on the Poincare 2-group. The Hamiltonian of the theory is constructed, and the algebra of constraints is computed. The Dirac brackets are evaluated, and the second class constraints are then eliminated from the theory. The results are contrasted to those of the topological Poincare gauge theory, which is equivalent to the BFCG model at the level of the classical action, but has a very different Hamiltonian structure.

Categorical generalization of spinfoam models

We give a brief review of the problem of quantum gravity. After the discussion of the nonrenormalizability of general relativity, we briefly mention the main research directions which aim to resolve this problem. Our attention then focuses on the approach of Loop Quantum Gravity, specifically spinfoam models. These models have some issues concerning the semiclassical limit and coupling of matter fields. The recent developments in category theory provide us with the necessary formalism to introduce a new action for general relativity and perform covariant quantization so that the issues of spinfoam models are successfully resolved.

Solution to the Cosmological Constant Problem in a Regge Quantum Gravity Model

We show that it is possible to solve the cosmological constant (CC) problem in a discrete quantum gravity theory based on Regge calculus by using the effective action approach and a special path-integral measure. The effective cosmological constant is given as a sum of 3 terms: the classical CC, the quantum gravity CC and the matter CC. Since the observations can only measure the sum of these 3 terms, we can choose the classical CC to be equal to the negative value of the matter CC. Hence the effective CC is given only by the quantum gravity CC, which is determined by the path-integral measure. Since the path-integral measure depends on a free parameter, this parameter can be chosen such that the effective CC gives the observed value.

A finiteness bound for the EPRL/FK spin foam model

We show that the EPRL/FK spin foam model of quantum gravity has an absolutely convergent partition function if the vertex amplitude is divided by an appropriate power $p$ of the product of dimensions of the vertex spins. This power is independent of the spin foam 2-complex and we find that $p>2$ insures the convergence of the state sum. Determining the convergence of the state sum for the values $0 \le p \le 2$ requires the knowledge of the large-spin asymptotics of the vertex amplitude in the cases when some of the vertex spins are large and other are small.

Cosine problem in EPRL/FK spinfoam model

We calculate the classical limit effective action of the EPRL/FK spinfoam model of quantum gravity coupled to matter fields. By employing the standard QFT background field method adapted to the spinfoam setting, we find that the model has many different classical effective actions. Most notably, these include the ordinary Einstein-Hilbert action coupled to matter, but also an action which describes antigravity. All those multiple classical limits appear as a consequence of of the fact that the EPRL/FK vertex amplitude has cosine-like large spin asymptotics. We discuss some possible ways to eliminate the unwanted classical limits.

Poincare 2-group and quantum gravity

We show that General Relativity can be formulated as a constrained topological theory for flat 2-connections associated to the Poincaré 2-group. Matter can be consistently coupled to gravity in this formulation. We also show that the edge lengths of the spacetime manifold triangulation arise as the basic variables in the path-integral quantization, while the state-sum amplitude is an evaluation of a colored 3-complex, in agreement with the category theory results. A 3-complex amplitude for Euclidean quantum gravity is proposed.

Graviton propagator asymptotics and the classical limit of ELPR/FK spin foam models

We study the classical limit of the ELPR/FK spin foam models by analyzing the large-distance asymptotics of the corresponding graviton propagators. This is done by examining the large-spin asymptotics of the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction which is peaked around a classical flat spatial geometry. By using the stationary phase method we determine the wavefunction asymptotics. The obtained asymptotics does not give the desired large-distance asymptotics for the corresponding graviton propagator. However, we show that the ELPR/FK vertex amplitude can be redefined such that the corresponding Hartle-Hawking wavefunction gives the desired asymptotics for the graviton propagator.

Semiclassical Limit of New Spin Foam Models

We study the problem of semiclassical limit of Loop Quantum Gravity theory defined by the new spin foam models. This is done by analyzing the large-spin asymptotics of the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction. By using the stationary phase method we determine the wavefunction asymptotics, which then determines the large-distance asymptotics of the corresponding graviton propagator. We show that the graviton propagator behaves as the inverse distance to the fourth power. Our result is a direct consequence of the large-spin asymptotics of the spin foam model vertex amplitude, and it is valid for all new spin foam models, since they all have the same type of the vertex amplitude asymptotics. We also find the type of the vertex amplitude asymptotics which gives the correct graviton propagator.

Interaction of the Particle with the String in Pole-Dipole Approximation

Within the framework of generalized Papapetrou method, we derive the effective equations of motion for a string with two particles attached to its ends, along with appropriate boundary conditions. The equations of motion are the usual Nambu-Goto-like equations, while boundary conditions turn out to be equations of motion for the particles at the string ends. The form of those equations is discussed, and they are explicitly solved for a particular case of a straight-line string rotating around its center. From this solution we obtain the correction terms to the $J\propto E^2$ law describing Regge trajectories, due to nonzero angular momenta of the particles.

Large-spin asymptotics of Euclidean LQG flat-space wavefunctions

We analyze the large-spin asymptotics of a class of spin-network wavefunctions of Euclidean Loop Quantum Gravity, which corresponds to a flat spacetime. A wavefunction from this class can be represented as a sum over the spins of an amplitude for a spin network whose graph is a composition of the the wavefunction spin network graph with the dual one-complex graph and the tetrahedron graphs for a triangulation of the spatial 3-manifold. This spin-network amplitude can be represented as a product of 6j symbols, which is then used to find the large-spin asymptotics of the wavefunction. By using the Laplace method we show that the large-spin asymptotics is given by a sum of Gaussian functions. However, these Gaussian functions are not of the type which gives the correct graviton propagator.

Spinning branes in Riemann-Cartan spacetime

We use the conservation law of the stress-energy and spin tensors to study the motion of massive brane-like objects in Riemann-Cartan geometry. The world-sheet equations and boundary conditions are obtained in a manifestly covariant form. In the particle case, the resultant world-line equations turn out to exhibit a novel spin-curvature coupling. In particular, the spin of a zero-size particle does not couple to the background curvature. In the string case, the world-sheet dynamics is studied for some special choices of spin and torsion. As a result, the known coupling to the Kalb-Ramond antisymmetric external field is obtained. Geometrically, the Kalb-Ramond field has been recognized as a part of the torsion itself, rather than the torsion potential.

Test membranes in Riemann-Cartan spacetimes

The dynamics of brane-like extended objects in spacetimes with torsion is derived from the conservation equations of stress-energy and spin tensors. Thus obtained world-sheet equations are applied to macroscopic test membranes made of spinning matter. Specifically, we consider membranes with maximally symmetric distribution of stress-energy and spin. These are characterized by two constants only: the tension and spin magnitude. By solving the world-sheet equations, we discover a similarity between such membranes in Riemann-Cartan backgrounds, and string theory membranes in low-energy string backgrounds. In the second part of the paper, we apply this result to cylindrical membranes wrapped around the extra compact dimension of a $(D+1)$-dimensional spacetime. In the narrow membrane limit, we discover how effective macroscopic strings couple to torsion. An observed similarity with the string sigma model is noted.

Classical Spinning Branes in Curved Backgrounds

The dynamics of a classical branelike object in a curved background is derived from the covariant stress-energy conservation of the brane matter. The world sheet equations and boundary conditions are obtained in the pole-dipole approximation, where nontrivial brane thickness gives rise to its intrinsic angular momentum. It is shown that intrinsic angular momentum couples to both, the background curvature and the brane orbital degrees of freedom. The whole procedure is manifestly covariant with respect to spacetime diffeomorphisms and world sheet reparametrizations. In addition, two extra gauge symmetries are discovered and utilized. The examples of the point particle and the string in 4 spacetime dimensions are analyzed in more detail. A particular attention is paid to the Nambu-Goto string with massive spinning particles attached to its ends.

Dirac particle in gravitational field

Classical dynamics of spinning zero-size objects in an external gravitational field is derived from the conservation law of the stress-energy and spin tensors. The resulting world line equations differ from those in the existing literature. In particular, the spin of the Dirac particle does not couple to the background curvature. As a check of consistency, the wave packet solution of the free Dirac equation is considered. The resulting equations are shown to include a constraint that relates the wave packet spin to its orbital angular momentum. In the zero-size limit, both contributions to the total angular momentum disappear simultaneously.

Zero-size objects in Riemann-Cartan spacetime

We use the conservation law of the stress-energy and spin tensors to study the motion of massive zero-size objects in Riemann-Cartan geometry. The resultant world line equations turn out to exhibit a novel spin-curvature coupling. In particular, the spin of the Dirac particle does not couple to the background curvature. This is a consequence of its truly zero size which consistently rules out the orbital degrees of freedom. As a test of consistency, the wave packet solution of the free Dirac equation is considered. It is shown that the wave packet spin and orbital angular momentum disappear simultaneously in the zero-size limit.
