Averaging in the case of multiple invariant measures for the fast system

We consider the averaging principle for deterministic or stochastic systems with a fast stochastic component (family of continuous-time Markov chains depending on the state of the system as a parameter). We show that, due to bifurcations in the simplex of invariant probability measures of the chains, the limiting system should be considered on a graph or on an open book with certain gluing conditions in the vertices of the graph (or on the bifurcation surface).

Diffusion in the presence of cells with semi-permeable membranes

We consider processes that coincide with a given diffusion process except on the boundaries of a finite collection of domains. The behavior on each of the boundaries is asymmetric: the process is much more likely to enter the interior of the domain than to enter the interior of its complement, with a small parameter controlling the trapping mechanism. We describe the limiting behavior of the processes. In particular, if the parameters controlling the boundary behavior have different orders of magnitude for different domains or if the domains are nested, metastable distributions between the trapping regions are described.

On the Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation for SPDEs and its interplay with large deviations and long time behavior

We discuss here the validity of the small mass limit (the so-called Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation) on a fixed time interval for a class of semi-linear stochastic wave equations, both in the case of the presence of a constant friction term and in the case of the presence of a constant magnetic field. We also consider the small mass limit in an infinite time interval and we see how the approximation is stable in terms of the invariant measure and of the large deviation estimates and the exit problem from a bounded domain of the space of square integrable functions.

Large Deviations for the Langevin equation with strong damping

We study large deviations in the Langevin dynamics, with damping of order $\e^{-1}$ and noise of order $1$, as $\e\downarrow 0$. The damping coefficient is assumed to be state dependent. We proceed first with a change of time and then, we use a weak convergence approach to large deviations and their equivalent formulation in terms of the Laplace principle, to determine the good action functional. Some applications of these results to the exit problem from a domain and to the wave front propagation for a suitable class of reaction diffusion equations are considered.

On the behavior of diffusion processes with traps

We consider processes that coincide with a given diffusion process outside a finite collection of domains. In each of the domains, there is, additionally, a large drift directed towards the interior of the domain. We describe the limiting behavior of the processes as the magnitude of the drift tends to infinity, and thus the domains become trapping, with the time to exit the domains being exponentially large. In particular, in exponential time scales, metastable distributions between the trapping regions are considered.

On stochastic perturbations of dynamical systems with a "rough" symmetry. Hierarchy of Markov chains

We consider long-time behavior of dynamical systems perturbed by a small noise. Under certain conditions, a slow component of such a motion, which is most important for long- time evolution, can be described as a motion on the cone of invariant measures of the non- perturbed system. The case of a finite number of extreme points of the cone is considered in this paper. As is known, in the generic case, the long-time evolution can be described by a hierarchy of cycles defined by the action functional for corresponding stochastic processes. This, in particular, allows to study metastable distributions and such effects as stochastic resonance. If the system has some symmetry in the logarithmic asymptotics of transition probabilities (rough symmetry),the hierarchy of cycles should be replaced by a hierarchy of Markov chains and their invariant measures.

Quasipotential and exit time for 2D Stochastic Navier-Stokes equations driven by space time white noise

We are dealing with the Navier-Stokes equation in a bounded regular domain $D$ of $\mathbb{R}^2$, perturbed by an additive Gaussian noise $\partial w^{Q_δ}/\partial t$, which is white in time and colored in space. We assume that the correlation radius of the noise gets smaller and smaller as $δ\searrow 0$, so that the noise converges to the white noise in space and time. For every $δ>0$ we introduce the large deviation action functional $S^δ_{0,T}$ and the corresponding quasi-potential $U_δ$ and, by using arguments from relaxation and $Γ$-convergence we show that $U_δ$ converges to $U=U_0$, in spite of the fact that the Navier-Stokes equation has no meaning in the space of square integrable functions, when perturbed by space-time white noise. Moreover, in the case of periodic boundary conditions the limiting functional $U$ is explicitly computed. Finally, we apply these results to estimate of the asymptotics of the expected exit time of the solution of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equation from a basin of attraction of an asymptotically stable point for the unperturbed system.

On second order elliptic equations with a small parameter

The Neumann problem with a small parameter $$(\dfrac{1}εL_0+L_1)u^ε(x)=f(x) \text{for} x\in G, .\dfrac{\partial u^ε}{\partial γ^ε}(x)|_{\partial G}=0$$ is considered in this paper. The operators $L_0$ and $L_1$ are self-adjoint second order operators. We assume that $L_0$ has a non-negative characteristic form and $L_1$ is strictly elliptic. The reflection is with respect to inward co-normal unit vector $γ^ε(x)$. The behavior of $\lim\limits_{ε\downarrow 0}u^ε(x)$ is effectively described via the solution of an ordinary differential equation on a tree. We calculate the differential operators inside the edges of this tree and the gluing condition at the root. Our approach is based on an analysis of the corresponding diffusion processes.

On perturbations of generalized Landau-Lifshitz dynamics

We consider deterministic and stochastic perturbations of dynamical systems with conservation laws in $\R^3$. The Landau-Lifshitz equation for the magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetics is a special case of our system. The averaging principle is a natural tool in such problems. But bifurcations in the set of invariant measures lead to essential modification in classical averaging. The limiting slow motion in this case, in general, is a stochastic process even if pure deterministic perturbations of a deterministic system are considered. The stochasticity is a result of instabilities in the non-perturbed system as well as of existence of ergodic sets of a positive measure. We effectively describe the limiting slow motion.

On stochasticity in nearly-elastic systems

Nearly-elastic model systems with one or two degrees of freedom are considered: the system is undergoing a small loss of energy in each collision with the "wall". We show that instabilities in this purely deterministic system lead to stochasticity of its long-time behavior. Various ways to give a rigorous meaning to the last statement are considered. All of them, if applicable, lead to the same stochasticity which is described explicitly. So that the stochasticity of the long-time behavior is an intrinsic property of the deterministic systems.

Small mass asymptotic for the motion with vanishing friction

We consider the small mass asymptotic (Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation) for the Langevin equation with a variable friction coefficient. The friction coefficient is assumed to be vanishing within certain region. We introduce a regularization for this problem and study the limiting motion for the 1-dimensional case and a multidimensional model problem. The limiting motion is a Markov process on a projected space. We specify the generator and boundary condition of this limiting Markov process and prove the convergence.

Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation in the case of variable friction

We consider the small mass asymptotics (Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation) for the Langevin equation with a variable friction coefficient. The limit of the solution in the classical sense does not exist in this case. We study a modification of the Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation. Some applications of the Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation to problems with fast oscillating or discontinuous coefficients are considered.

Fast transport asymptotics for stochastic RDEs with boundary noise

We consider a class of stochastic reaction-diffusion equations also having a stochastic perturbation on the boundary and we show that when the diffusion rate is much larger than the rate of reaction, it is possible to replace the SPDE by a suitable one-dimensional stochastic differential equation. This replacement is possible under the assumption of spectral gap for the diffusion and is a result of averaging in the fast spatial transport. We also study the fluctuations around the averaged motion.

Reaction Diffusion Equations with Nonlinear Boundary Conditions in Narrow Domains

Second initial boundary problem in narrow domains of width $ε\ll 1$ for linear second order differential equations with nonlinear boundary conditions is considered in this paper. Using probabilistic methods we show that the solution of such a problem converges as $ε\downarrow 0$ to the solution of a standard reaction-diffusion equation in a domain of reduced dimension. This reduction allows to obtain some results concerning wave front propagation in narrow domains. In particular, we describe conditions leading to jumps of the wave front.
