Characterizing covers via simple closed curves

Given two finite covers p:X→Sp: X \to S and q:Y→Sq: Y \to S of a connected, oriented, closed surface SS of genus at least 22, we attempt to characterize the equivalence of pp and qq in terms of which curves lift to simple curves. Using Teichmüller theory and the complex of curves, we show that two regular covers pp and qq are equivalent if for any closed curve γ⊂Sγ\subset S, γγ lifts to a simple closed curve on XX if and only if it does to YY. When the covers are abelian, we also give a characterization of equivalence in terms of which powers of simple closed curves lift to closed curves.

On Kostant's weight qq-multiplicity formula for sl4(C)\mathfrak{sl}_{4}(\mathbb{C})

The qq-analog of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over a finite group, known as the Weyl group, whose terms involve the qq-analog of Kostant's partition function. This formula, when evaluated at q=1q=1, gives the multiplicity of a weight in a highest weight representation of a simple Lie algebra. In this paper, we consider the Lie algebra sl4(C)\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb{C}) and give closed formulas for the qq-analog of Kostant's weight multiplicity. This formula depends on the following two sets of results. First, we present closed formulas for the qq-analog of Kostant's partition function by counting restricted colored integer partitions. These formulas, when evaluated at q=1q=1, recover results of De Loera and Sturmfels. Second, we describe and enumerate the Weyl alternation sets, which consist of the elements of the Weyl group that contribute nontrivially to Kostant's weight multiplicity formula. From this, we introduce Weyl alternation diagrams on the root lattice of sl4(C)\mathfrak{sl}_4(\mathbb{C}), which are associated to the Weyl alternation sets. This work answers a question posed in 2019 by Harris, Loving, Ramirez, Rennie, Rojas Kirby, Torres Davila, and Ulysse.

Weight qq-multiplicities for representations of the exceptional Lie algebra g2\mathfrak{g}_2

Given a simple Lie algebra g\mathfrak{g}, Kostant's weight qq-multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over the Weyl group whose terms involve the qq-analog of Kostant's partition function. For ξξ (a weight of g\mathfrak{g}), the qq-analog of Kostant's partition function is a polynomial-valued function defined by ℘q(ξ)=∑ciqi\wp_q(ξ)=\sum c_i q^i where cic_i is the number of ways ξξ can be written as a sum of ii positive roots of g\mathfrak{g}. In this way, the evaluation of Kostant's weight qq-multiplicity formula at q=1q = 1 recovers the multiplicity of a weight in a highest weight representation of g\mathfrak{g}. In this paper, we give closed formulas for computing weight qq-multiplicities in a highest weight representation of the exceptional Lie algebra g2\mathfrak{g}_2.
