Rigidity of ε\varepsilon-harmonic maps of low degree

In 1981, Sacks and Uhlenbeck introduced their famous αα-energy as a way to approximate the Dirichlet energy and produce harmonic maps from surfaces into Riemannian manifolds. However, the second and third authors together with Malchiodi ([11],[12]) showed that for maps between two-spheres this method does not capture every harmonic map. They established a gap theorem for αα-harmonic maps of degree zero and also showed that below a certain energy bound αα-harmonic maps of degree one are rotations. We establish similar results for ε\varepsilon-harmonic maps uε ⁣:S2→S2u_\varepsilon \colon S^2\rightarrow S^2, which are critical points of the ε\varepsilon-energy introduced by the second author in [9]. In particular, we similarly show that ε\varepsilon-harmonic maps of degree zero with energy below 8π8π are constant and that maps of degree ±1\pm 1 with energy below 12π12π are of the form RxRx with R∈O(3)R\in O(3). Moreover, we construct non-trivial ε\varepsilon-harmonic maps of degree zero with energy >8π> 8π.

Limits of αα-harmonic maps

Critical points of approximations of the Dirichlet energy à la Sacks-Uhlenbeck are known to converge to harmonic maps in a suitable sense. However, we show that not every harmonic map can be approximated by critical points of such perturbed energies. Indeed, we prove that constant maps and the rotations of S2S^2 are the only critical points of EαE_α for maps from S2S^2 to S2S^2 whose αα-energy lies below some threshold. In particular, nontrivial dilations (which are harmonic) cannot arise as strong limits of αα-harmonic maps.

Splitting of 3-Manifolds and Rigidity of Area-Minimising Surfaces

In this paper we prove an area comparison result for certain totally geodesic surfaces in 3-manifolds with a lower bound on the scalar curvature. This result is a variant of a comparison theorem of Heintze-Karcher for minimal hypersurfaces in manifolds of nonnegative Ricci curvature. Our assumptions on the ambient manifold are weaker but the assumptions on the surface are considerably more restrictive. We then use our comparison theorem to provide a unified proof of various splitting theorems for 3-manifolds with lower bounds on the scalar curvature.
