Exceptional moduli spaces for exceptional $\mathcal{N}=3$ theories

It is expected on general grounds that the moduli space of 4d $\mathcal{N}=3$ theories is of the form $\mathbb{C}^{3r}/Γ$, with $r$ the rank and $Γ$ a crystallographic complex reflection group (CCRG). As in the case of Lie algebras, the space of CCRGs consists of several infinite families, together with some exceptionals. To date, no 4d $\mathcal{N}=3$ theory with moduli space labelled by an exceptional CCRG (excluding Weyl groups) has been identified. In this work we show that the 4d $\mathcal{N}=3$ theories proposed in \cite{Garcia-Etxebarria:2016erx}, constructed via non-geometric quotients of type-$\mathfrak{e}$ 6d (2,0) theories, realize nearly all such exceptional moduli spaces. In addition, we introduce an extension of this construction to allow for twists and quotients by outer automorphism symmetries. This gives new examples of 4d $\mathcal{N}=3$ theories going beyond simple S-folds.

Needles in a haystack: An algorithmic approach to the classification of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs

There is a well-known map from 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) to 2d vertex operator algebras (VOAs). The 4d Schur index corresponds to the VOA vacuum character, and must be a solution with integral coefficients of a modular differential equation. This suggests a classification program for 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs that starts with modular differential equations and proceeds by imposing all known constraints that follow from the 4d $\to$ 2d map. This program becomes fully algorithmic once one specifies the $\mathrm{\textit{order}}$ of the modular differential equation and the $\mathrm{\textit{rank}}$ (complex dimension of the Coulomb branch) of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory. As a proof of concept, we apply the algorithm to the study of rank-two $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs whose Schur indices satisfy a fourth-order untwisted modular differential equation. Scanning over a large number of putative cases, only 15 satisfy all of the constraints imposed by our algorithm, six of which correspond to known 4d SCFTs. More sophisticated constraints can be used to argue against the existence of the remaining nine cases. Altogether, this indicates that our knowledge of such rank-two SCFTs is surprisingly complete.

Magnetic quivers for rank 2 theories

In this note we construct magnetic quivers for the known rank-2 four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories. For every rank-1 theory one can find a unitary magnetic quiver; we observe that this is no longer possible at rank 2. Our list of magnetic quivers necessarily includes orthosymplectic quivers, in addition to unitary ones, of both the simply and non-simply laced variety. Using quiver subtraction, one can compute Higgs branch Hasse diagrams and compare with the results obtained via other methods finding nearly perfect agreement.

Testing our understanding of SCFTs: a catalogue of rank-2 $\mathcal{N}$=2 theories in four dimensions

In this paper we begin mapping out the space of rank-2 $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in four dimensions. This represents an ideal set of theories which can be potentially classified using purely quantum field-theoretic tools, thus providing a precious case study to probe the completeness of the current understanding of SCFTs, primarily derived from string theory constructions. Here, we collect and systematize a large amount of field theoretic data characterizing each theory. We also provide a detailed description of each case and determine the theories' Coulomb, Higgs and Mixed branch stratification. The theories naturally organize themselves into series connected by RG flows but which have gaps suggesting that our current understanding is not complete.

Construction and classification of Coulomb branch geometries

We give a non-technical summary of the classification program, very dear to the hearts of both authors, of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) based on the study of their Coulomb branch geometries. We outline the main ideas behind this program, review the most important results thus far obtained, and the prospects for future results. This contribution will appear in the volume "the Pollica perspective on the (super)-conformal world" but we decided to also make it available separately in the hope that it could be useful to those who are interested in obtaining a quick grasp of this rapidly developing program.

The constraining power of Coulomb Branch Geometry: lectures on Seiberg-Witten theory

The constraining mathematical structure of the Coulomb branch of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric theories is discussed. The presentation follows a somewhat different route from other excellent reviews on the subject and it is geared towards using this tool to classify four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories. This is the writeup of the lectures given at the Winter School "YRISW 2020" to appear in a special issue of JPhysA.

On the BPS Spectrum of the Rank-1 Minahan-Nemeschansky Theories

The F-theory realization of the rank-1 Minahan Nemeschansky (MN) $E_6$, $E_7$ and $E_8$ theories leads to a description of the BPS states on the Coulomb branch in terms of Type IIB $(p,q)$-string networks. Subject to a simple ansatz for the types of networks which can occur, we study the representations of the flavor symmetry group which occur in the BPS spectrum. The results we find for the $E_6$ and $E_7$ theories are in perfect agreement with previous calculations by other methods (in particular, we find that arbitrarily large representations occur), but our scheme is easier to implement and more computationally efficient. The string network picture also gives a possible explanation of the experimental observation that in rank-1 MN theories, BPS states whose charge is $n$ times a primitive charge occur with BPS index divisible by $(-1)^{n+1} n$.

Expanding the landscape of $\mathcal{N}$=2 rank 1 SCFTs

We refine our previous proposal for systematically classifying 4d rank-1 $\mathcal N=2$ SCFTs by constructing their possible Coulomb branch geometries. Four new recently discussed rank-1 theories, including novel $\mathcal{N}=3$ SCFTs, sit beautifully in our refined classification framework. By arguing for the consistency of their RG flows we can make a strong case for the existence of at least four additional rank-1 SCFTs, nearly doubling the number of known rank-1 SCFTs. The refinement consists of relaxing the assumption that the flavor symmetries of the SCFTs have no discrete factors. This results in an enlarged (but finite) set of possible rank-1 SCFTs. Their existence can be further constrained using consistency of their central charges and RG flows.

From S-confinement to 3D Chiral Theories: Dressing the Monopoles

Monopole operators play a central role in 3 dimensional supersymmetric dualities: a careful understanding of their spectrum is necessary to match chiral operators on either sides of a conjectured duality. In Chern-Simons theories ($k\neq0$), monopole operators acquire an electric charge, thus they need to be "dressed" by chiral matter superfields to be made gauge-invariant. Here we present strong evidence that "dressed" monopoles appear in $SU(N)$ chiral theories even for $k=0$ because of mixed CS terms generated along certain Coulomb branch directions. Our analysis is based on the dimensional reduction of 4-dimensional dualities which, for the simplest s-confining case, allows us to easily identify the spectrum of the electric chiral operators.

Dynamics of 3D SUSY Gauge Theories with Antisymmetric Matter

We investigate the IR dynamics of N=2 SUSY gauge theories in 3D with antisymmetric matter. The presence of the antisymmetric fields leads to further splitting of the Coulomb branch. Counting zero modes in the instanton background suggests that more than a single direction along the Coulomb branch may remain unlifted. We examine the case of SU(4) with one or two antisymmetric fields and various flavors in detail. Using the results for the corresponding 4D theories, we find the IR dynamics of the 3D cases via compactification and a real mass deformation. We find that for the s-confining case with two antisymmetric fields, a second unlifted Coulomb branch direction indeed appears in the low-energy dynamics. We present several non-trivial consistency checks to establish the validity of these results. We also comment on the expected structure of general s-confining theories in 3D, which might involve several unlifted Coulomb branch directions.

B^\pm -> D K^\pm with direct CP violation in charm

We investigate the implications of direct CP violation (CPV) on the determination of the unitarity triangle angle γ from B -> DK decays. We show that γ can still be extracted even with the inclusion of direct CPV in charm if (i) at least one of the D decays has negligible CP violation; and (ii) data from charm factory at threshold are used. If approximate expressions without including direct CP violation in charm are used, this can result in a shift in γ that is O(r_D/r_B). It is modest for B -> DK but can be O(1) for B -> Dπ. We illustrate the size of the shift on an example of Gronau-London-Wyler method.

Flavor Oscillation from the Two-Point Function

We present a formalism for the flavor oscillation of unstable particles that relies only upon the structure of the time Fourier-transformed two-point Green's function. We derive exact oscillation probability and integrated oscillation probability formulae, and verify that our results reproduce the known results for both neutrino and neutral meson oscillation in the expected regimes of parameter space. The generality of our approach permits us to investigate flavor oscillation in exotic parameter regimes, and present the corresponding oscillation formulae.

Kinematic Edges with Flavor Oscillation and Non-Zero Widths

Kinematic edges in cascade decays provide a probe of the masses of new particles. In some new physics scenarios the decay chain involves intermediate particles of different flavors that can mix and oscillate. We discuss the implication of such oscillation, and in particular its interplay with the non-zero widths of the particles. We derive explicit formulae for differential decay rates involving both non-zero widths and oscillation, and show that in the case where the mass difference between the intermediate particle is of the order of their widths, both oscillation and width effects are important. An examination of the physical observables contained in these differential decay rates is provided. We calculate differential decay rates for cases in which the intermediate particles are either scalars or fermions.

Quantum Fields on Noncommutative Spacetimes: Theory and Phenomenology

In the present work we review the twisted field construction of quantum field theory on noncommutative spacetimes based on twisted Poincaré invariance. We present the latest development in the field, in particular the notion of equivalence of such quantum field theories on a noncommutative spacetime, in this regard we work out explicitly the inequivalence between twisted quantum field theories on Moyal and Wick-Voros planes; the duality between deformations of the multiplication map on the algebra of functions on spacetime $\mathscr{F}(\mathbb{R}^4)$ and coproduct deformations of the Poincaré-Hopf algebra $H\mathscr{P}$ acting on~$\mathscr{F}(\mathbb{R}^4)$; the appearance of a nonassociative product on $\mathscr{F}(\mathbb{R}^4)$ when gauge fields are also included in the picture. The last part of the manuscript is dedicated to the phenomenology of noncommutative quantum field theories in the particular approach adopted in this review. CPT violating processes, modification of two-point temperature correlation function in CMB spectrum analysis and Pauli-forbidden transition in ${\rm Be}^4$ are all effects which show up in such a noncommutative setting. We review how they appear and in particular the constraint we can infer from comparison between theoretical computations and experimental bounds on such effects. The best bound we can get, coming from Borexino experiment, is $\gtrsim 10^{24}$ TeV for the energy scale of noncommutativity, which corresponds to a length scale $\lesssim 10^{-43}$ m. This bound comes from a different model of spacetime deformation more adapted to applications in atomic physics. It is thus model dependent even though similar bounds are expected for the Moyal spacetime as well as argued elsewhere.
