Justification of a nonlinear sixth-order thin-film equation as the reduced model for a fluid -- structure interaction problem

Starting from a nonlinear 2D/1D fluid-structure interaction problem between a thin layer of a viscous fluid and a thin elastic structure, on the vanishing limit of the relative fluid thickness, we rigorously derive a sixth-order thin-film equation describing the dynamics of vertical displacements of the structure. The procedure is essentially based on quantitative energy estimates, quantified in terms of the relative fluid thickness, and a uniform no-contact result between the structure and the solid substrate. The sixth-order thin-film equation is justified in the sense of strong convergence of rescaled structure displacements to the unique positive classical solution of the thin-film equation. Moreover, the limit fluid velocity and the pressure can be expressed solely in terms of the solution to the thin-film equation.

The concavity of generalized entropy powers

In this note we introduce a new family of entropy powers which are related to generalized entropies, called Sharma-Mittal entropies, and we prove their concavity along diffusion processes generated by $L^2$-Wasserstein gradient flows of corresponding entropy functionals. This result extends the result of Savaré and Toscani on the concavity of Rényi entropy powers (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 2014) and reveals a connection to Rényi entropy power inequalities by Bobkov and Marsiglietti (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 2017).

A review on rigorous derivation of reduced models for fluid-structure interaction systems

In this paper we review and systematize the mathematical theory on justification of sixth-order thin-film equations as reduced models for various fluid-structure interaction systems in which fluids are lubricating underneath elastic structures. Justification is based on careful examination of energy estimates, weak convergence results of solutions of the original fluid-structure interaction systems to the solution of the sixth-order thin-film equation, and quantitative error estimates which provide even strong convergence results.

Rigorous derivation of a linear sixth-order thin-film equation as a reduced model for thin fluid -- thin structure interaction problems

We analyze a linear 3D/3D fluid-structure interaction problem between a thin layer of a viscous fluid and a thin elastic plate-like structure with the aim of deriving a simplified reduced model. Based on suitable energy dissipation inequalities quantified in terms of two small parameters, thickness of the fluid layer and thickness of the elastic structure, we identify the right relation between the system coefficients and small parameters which eventually provide a reduced model on the vanishing limit. The reduced model is a linear sixth-order thin-film equation describing the out-of-plane displacement of the structure, which is justified in terms of weak convergence results relating its solution to the solutions of the original fluid-structure interaction problem. Furthermore, approximate solutions to the fluid-structure interaction problem are reconstructed from the reduced model and quantitative error estimates are obtained, which provide even strong convergence results.

Well-posedness and convergence of a numerical scheme for the corrected Derrida-Lebowitz-Speer-Spohn equation using the Hellinger distance

In this paper we construct a unique global in time weak nonnegative solution to the corrected Derrida-Lebowitz-Speer-Spohn equation, which statistically describes the interface fluctuations between two phases in a certain spin system. The construction of the weak solution is based on the dissipation of a Lyapunov functional which equals to the square of the Hellinger distance between the solution and the constant steady state. Furthermore, it is shown that the weak solution converges at an exponential rate to the constant steady state in the Hellinger distance and thus also in the $L^1$-norm. Numerical scheme which preserves the variational structure of the equation is devised and its convergence in terms of a discrete Hellinger distance is demonstrated.

On the simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction in elasticity and locality of $Γ$-closure

On the example of linearized elasticity we provide a framework for simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction in the setting of linearized elasticity as well as non-linear elasticity for the derivation of homogenized von Kármán plate and bending rod models. The framework encompasses even perforated domains and domains with oscillatory boundary, provided that the corresponding extension operator can be constructed. Locality property of $Γ$-closure is established, i.e. every energy density obtained by the homogenization process can be in almost every point be obtained as the limit of periodic energy densities.

Entropy-stable and entropy-dissipative approximations of a fourth-order quantum diffusion equation

Structure-preserving numerical schemes for a nonlinear parabolic fourth-order equation, modeling the electron transport in quantum semiconductors, with periodic boundary conditions are analyzed. First, a two-step backward differentiation formula (BDF) semi-discretization in time is investigated. The scheme preserves the nonnegativity of the solution, is entropy stable and dissipates a modified entropy functional. The existence of a weak semi-discrete solution and, in a particular case, its temporal second-order convergence to the continuous solution is proved. The proofs employ an algebraic relation which implies the G-stability of the two-step BDF. Second, an implicit Euler and q-step BDF discrete variational derivative method are considered. This scheme, which exploits the variational structure of the equation, dissipates the discrete Fisher information (or energy). Numerical experiments show that the discrete (relative) entropies and Fisher information decay even exponentially fast to zero.
