The stable category of preorders in a pretopos I: general theory

In a recent article Facchini and Finocchiaro considered a natural pretorsion theory in the category of preordered sets inducing a corresponding stable category. In the present work we propose an alternative construction of the stable category of the category $\mathsf{PreOrd} (\mathbb C)$ of internal preorders in any coherent category $\mathbb C$, that enlightens the categorical nature of this notion. When $\mathbb C$ is a pretopos we prove that the quotient functor from the category of internal preorders to the associated stable category preserves finite coproducts. Furthermore, we identify a wide class of pretoposes, including all $σ$-pretoposes and all elementary toposes, with the property that this functor sends any short $\mathcal Z$-exact sequences in $\mathsf{PreOrd} (\mathbb C)$ (where $\mathcal Z$ is a suitable ideal of trivial morphisms) to a short exact sequence in the stable category. These properties will play a fundamental role in proving the universal property of the stable category, that will be the subject of a second article on this topic.

The stable category of preorders in a pretopos II: the universal property

We prove that the stable category associated with the category $\mathsf{PreOrd}(\mathbb C)$ of internal preorders in a pretopos $\mathbb C$ satisfies a universal property. The canonical functor from $\mathsf{PreOrd}(\mathbb C)$ to the stable category $\mathsf{Stab}(\mathbb C)$ universally transforms a pretorsion theory in $\mathsf{PreOrd}(\mathbb C)$ into a classical torsion theory in the pointed category $\mathsf{Stab}(\mathbb C)$. This also gives a categorical insight into the construction of the stable category first considered by Facchini and Finocchiaro in the special case when $\mathbb C$ is the category of sets.

Some remarks on protolocalizations and protoadditive reflections

We investigate additional properties of protolocalizations, introduced and studied by F. Borceux, M. M. Clementino, M. Gran, and L. Sousa, and of protoadditive reflections, introduced and studied by T. Everaert and M. Gran. Among other things we show that there are no non-trivial (protolocalizations and) protoadditive reflections of the category of groups, and establish a connection between protolocalizations and Kurosh--Amitsur radicals of groups with multiple operators whose semisimple classes form subvarieties.

A new Galois structure in the category of internal preorders

Let $\mathsf{PreOrd}(\mathbb C)$ be the category of internal preorders in an exact category $\mathbb C$. We show that the pair $(\mathsf{Eq}(\mathbb C), \mathsf{ParOrd}(\mathbb C))$ is a pretorsion theory in $\mathsf{PreOrd}(\mathbb C)$, where $\mathsf{Eq}(\mathbb C)$ and $\mathsf{ParOrd}(\mathbb C)$) are the full subcategories of internal equivalence relations and of internal partial orders in $\mathbb C$, respectively. We observe that $\mathsf{ParOrd}(\mathbb C)$ is a reflective subcategory of $\mathsf{PreOrd}(\mathbb C)$ such that each component of the unit of the adjunction is a pullback-stable regular epimorphism. The reflector $F:\mathsf{PreOrd}(\mathbb C)\to \mathsf{ParOrd}(\mathbb C)$ turns out to have stable units in the sense of Cassidy, Hébert and Kelly, thus inducing an admissible categorical Galois structure. In particular, when $\mathbb C$ is the category $\mathsf{Set}$ of sets, we show that this reflection induces a monotone-light factorization system (in the sense of Carboni, Janelidze, Kelly and Paré) in $\mathsf{PreOrd}(\mathsf{Set})$. A topological interpretation of our results in the category of Alexandroff-discrete spaces is also given, via the well-known isomorphism between this latter category and $\mathsf{PreOrd}(\mathsf{Set})$.

An introduction to regular categories

This paper provides a short introduction to the notion of regular category and its use in categorical algebra. We first prove some of its basic properties, and consider some fundamental algebraic examples. We then analyse the algebraic properties of the categories satisfying the additional Mal'tsev axiom, and then the weaker Goursat axiom. These latter contexts can be seen as the categorical counterparts of the properties of $2$-permutability and of $3$-permutability of congruences in universal algebra. Mal'tsev and Goursat categories have been intensively studied in the last years: we present here some of their basic properties, which are useful to read more advanced texts in categorical algebra.

Pretorsion theories in general categories

We present a setting for the study of torsion theories in general categories. The idea is to associate, with any pair ($\mathcal T$, $\mathcal F$) of full replete subcategories in a category $\mathcal C$, the corresponding full subcategory $\mathcal Z = \mathcal T \cap \mathcal F$ of \emph{trivial objects} in $\mathcal C$. The morphisms which factor through $\mathcal Z$ are called $\mathcal Z$-trivial, and these form an ideal of morphisms, with respect to which one can define $\mathcal Z$-prekernels, $\mathcal Z$-precokernels, and short $\mathcal Z$-preexact sequences. This naturally leads to the notion of pretorsion theory, which is the object of study of this article, and includes the classical one in the abelian context when $\mathcal Z$ is reduced to the $0$-object of $\mathcal C$. We study the basic properties of pretorsion theories, and examine some new examples in the category of all endomappings of finite sets and in the category of preordered sets.

Monoidal characterisation of groupoids and connectors

We study internal structures in regular categories using monoidal methods. Groupoids in a regular Goursat category can equivalently be described as special dagger Frobenius monoids in its monoidal category of relations. Similarly, connectors can equivalently be described as Frobenius structures with a ternary multiplication. We study such ternary Frobenius structures and the relationship to binary ones, generalising that between connectors and groupoids.

Split extensions and semidirect products of unitary magmas

We develop a theory of split extensions of unitary magmas, which includes defining such extensions and describing them via suitably defined semidirect product, yielding an equivalence between the categories of split extensions and of (suitably defined) actions of unitary magmas on unitary magmas. The class of split extensions is pullback stable but not closed under composition. We introduce two subclasses of it that have both of these properties.

What is the spectral category?

For a category $\mathcal{C}$ with finite limits and a class $\mathcal{S}$ of monomorphisms in $\mathcal{C}$ that is pullback stable, contains all isomorphisms, is closed under composition, and has the strong left cancellation property, we use pullback stable $\mathcal{S}$-essential monomorphisms in $\mathcal{C}$ to construct a spectral category $\mathrm{Spec}(\mathcal{C},\mathcal{S})$. We show that it has finite limits and that the canonical functor $\mathcal{C}\to \mathrm{Spec}(\mathcal{C},\mathcal{S})$ preserves finite limits. When $\mathcal{C}$ is a normal category, assuming for simplicity that $\mathcal{S}$ is the class of all monomorphisms in $\mathcal{C}$, we show that pullback stable $\mathcal{S}$-essential monomorphisms are the same as what we call subobject-essential monomorphisms.

Beck-Chevalley condition and Goursat categories

We characterise regular Goursat categories through a specific stability property of regular epimorphisms with respect to pullbacks. Under the assumption of the existence of some pushouts this property can be also expressed as a restricted Beck-Chevalley condition, with respect to the fibration of points, for a special class of commutative squares. In the case of varieties of universal algebras these results give, in particular, a structural explanation of the existence of the ternary operations characterising $3$-permutable varieties of universal algebras.

A torsion theory in the category of cocommutative Hopf algebras

The purpose of this article is to prove that the category of cocommutative Hopf $K$-algebras, over a field $K$ of characteristic zero, is a semi-abelian category. Moreover, we show that this category is action representable, and that it contains a torsion theory whose torsion-free and torsion parts are given by the category of groups and by the category of Lie $K$-algebras, respectively.

Closure operators in the category of quandles

We study a regular closure operator in the category of quandles. We show that the regular closure operator and the pullback closure operator corresponding to the reflector from the category of quandles to its full subcategory of trivial quandles coincide, we give a simple description of this closure operator, and analyze some of its properties. The category of algebraically connected quandles turns out to be a connectedness in the sense of Arhangel'ski\vı and Wiegandt corresponding to the full subcategory of trivial quandles, while the disconnectedness associated with it is shown to contain all quasi-trivial quandles. The separated objects for the pullback closure operator are precisely the trivial quandles. A simple formula describing the effective closure operator on congruences corresponding to the same reflector is also given.

Semi-localizations of semi-abelian categories

A semi-localization of a category is a full reflective subcategory with the property that the reflector is semi-left-exact. In this article we first determine an abstract characterization of the categories which are semi-localizations of an exact Mal'tsev category, by specializing a result due to S. Mantovani. We then turn our attention to semi-abelian categories, where a special type of semi-localizations are known to coincide with torsion-free subcategories. A new characterisation of protomodular categories in terms of binary relations is obtained, inspired by the one discovered in the pointed context by Z. Janelidze. This result is useful to obtain an abstract characterization of the torsion-free and of the hereditarily-torsion-free subcategories of semi-abelian categories. Some examples are considered in detail in the categories of groups, crossed modules, commutative rings and topological groups. We finally explain how these results extend similar ones obtained by W. Rump in the abelian context.

Weighted commutators in semi-abelian categories

We introduce new notions of weighted centrality and weighted commutators corresponding to each other in the same way as centrality of congruences and commutators do in the Smith commutator theory. Both the Huq commutator of subobjects and Pedicchio's categorical generalization of Smith commutator are special cases of our weighted commutators; in fact we obtain them by taking the smallest and the largest weight respectively. At the end of the paper we briefly consider the universal-algebraic context in connection with an older work of the third author on the ideal theory version of the commutator theory.

A description of the fundamental group in terms of commutators and closure operators

A connection between the Galois-theoretic approach to semi-abelian homology and the homological closure operators is established. In particular, a generalised Hopf formula for homology is obtained, allowing the choice of a new kind of functors as coefficients. This makes it possible to calculate the fundamental groups corresponding to many interesting reflections arising, for instance, in the categories of groups, rings, compact groups and simplicial loops.

Monotone-light factorisation systems and torsion theories

Given a torsion theory (Y,X) in an abelian category C, the reflector I from C to the torsion-free subcategory X induces a reflective factorisation system (E, M) on C. It was shown by A. Carboni, G.M. Kelly, G. Janelidze and R. Paré that (E, M) induces a monotone-light factorisation system (E',M*) by simultaneously stabilising E and localising M, whenever the torsion theory is hereditary and any object in C is a quotient of an object in X. We extend this result to arbitrary normal categories, and improve it also in the abelian case, where the heredity assumption on the torsion theory turns out to be redundant. Several new examples of torsion theories where this result applies are then considered in the categories of abelian groups, groups, topological groups, commutative rings, and crossed modules.

On $2$-star-permutability in regular multi-pointed categories

$2$-star-permutable categories were introduced in a joint work with Z. Janelidze and A. Ursini as a common generalisation of regular Mal'tsev categories and of normal subtractive categories. In the present article we first characterise these categories in terms of what we call star-regular pushouts. We then show that the $3 \times 3$ Lemma characterising normal subtractive categories and the Cuboid Lemma characterising regular Mal'tsev categories are special instances of a more general homological lemma for star-exact sequences. We prove that $2$-star-permutability is equivalent to the validity of this lemma for a star-regular category.

On factorisation systems for surjective quandle homomorphisms

We study and compare two factorisation systems for surjective homomorphisms in the category of quandles. The first one is induced by the adjunction between quandles and trivial quandles, and a precise description of the two classes of morphisms of this factorisation system is given. In doing this we observe that a special class of congruences in the category of quandles always permute in the sense of the composition of relations, a fact that opens the way to some new universal algebraic investigations in the category of quandles. The second factorisation system is the one discovered by E. Bunch, P. Lofgren, A. Rapp and D. N. Yetter. We conclude with an example showing a difference between these factorisation systems.

On the characterization of Jónsson-Tarski and of subtractive varieties

We investigate unital, subtractive and strongly unital regular categories with enough projectives and give characterizations of their projective covers. The categorical equation "strongly unital = unital + subtractive" is explored: this leads to proofs of their varietal characterizations in terms of the categorical properties of the corresponding algebraic theories.

Some remarks on pullbacks in Gumm categories

We extend some properties of pullbacks which are known to hold in a Mal'tsev context to the more general context of Gumm categories. The varieties of universal algebras which are Gumm categories are precisely the congruence modular ones. These properties lead to a simple alternative proof of the known property that central extensions and normal extensions coincide for any Galois structure associated with a Birkhoff subcategory of an exact Goursat category.

The Cuboid Lemma and Mal'tsev categories

We prove that a regular category $\mathcal C$ is a Mal'tsev category if and only if a strong form of the denormalised $3 \times 3$ Lemma holds true in $\mathcal C$. In this version of the $3 \times 3$ Lemma, the vertical exact forks are replaced by pullbacks of regular epimorphisms along arbitrary morphisms. The shape of the diagram it determines suggests to call it the Cuboid Lemma. This new characterisation of regular categories that are Mal'tsev categories (= $2$-permutable) is similar to the one previously obtained for Goursat categories (= $3$-permutable). We also analyse the "relative" version of the Cuboid Lemma and extend our results to that context.

Star-regularity and regular completions

In this paper we establish a new characterisation of star-regular categories, using a property of internal reflexive graphs, which is suggested by a recent result due to O. Ngaha Ngaha and the first author. We show that this property is, in a suitable sense, invariant under regular completion of a category in the sense of A. Carboni and E. M. Vitale. Restricting to pointed categories, where star-regularity becomes normality in the sense of the second author, this reveals an unusual behaviour of the exactness property of normality (i.e. the property that regular epimorphisms are normal epimorphisms) compared to other closely related exactness properties studied in categorical algebra.

Protoadditive functors, derived torsion theories and homology

Protoadditive functors are designed to replace additive functors in a non-abelian setting. Their properties are studied, in particular in relationship with torsion theories, Galois theory, homology and factorisation systems. It is shown how a protoadditive torsion-free reflector induces a chain of derived torsion theories in the categories of higher extensions, similar to the Galois structures of higher central extensions previously considered in semi-abelian homological algebra. Such higher central extensions are also studied, with respect to Birkhoff subcategories whose reflector is protoadditive or, more generally, factors through a protoadditive reflector. In this way we obtain simple descriptions of the non-abelian derived functors of the reflectors via higher Hopf formulae. Various examples are considered in the categories of groups, compact groups, internal groupoids in a semi-abelian category, and other ones.

On closure operators and reflections in Goursat categories

By defining a closure operator on effective equivalence relations in a regular category $C$, it is possible to establish a bijective correspondence between these closure operators and the regular epireflective subcategories $L$ of $C$. When $C$ is an exact Goursat category this correspondence restricts to a bijection between the Birkhoff closure operators on effective equivalence relations and the Birkhoff subcategories of $C$. In this case it is possible to provide an explicit description of the closure, and to characterise the congruence distributive Goursat categories.
