On the self-similar behaviour of coagulation systems with injection

In this paper we prove the existence of a family of self-similar solutions for a class of coagulation equations with a constant flux of particles from the origin. These solutions are expected to describe the longtime asymptotics of Smoluchowski's coagulation equations with a time independent source of clusters concentrated in small sizes. The self-similar profiles are shown to be smooth, provided the coagulation kernel is also smooth. Moreover, the self-similar profiles are estimated from above and from below by $x^{-(γ+3)/2}$ as $x \to 0$, where $γ<1 $ is the homogeneity of the kernel, and are proven to decay at least exponentially as $x \to \infty$.

Localization in stationary non-equilibrium solutions for multicomponent coagulation systems

We consider the multicomponent Smoluchowski coagulation equation under non-equilibrium conditions induced either by a source term or via a constant flux constraint. We prove that the corresponding stationary non-equilibrium solutions have a universal localization property. More precisely, we show that these solutions asymptotically localize into a direction determined by the source or by a flux constraint: the ratio between monomers of a given type to the total number of monomers in the cluster becomes ever closer to a predetermined ratio as the cluster size is increased. The assumptions on the coagulation kernel are quite general, with isotropic power law bounds. The proof relies on a particular measure concentration estimate and on the control of asymptotic scaling of the solutions which is allowed by previously derived estimates on the mass current observable of the system.

Damped Arrow-Hurwicz algorithm for sphere packing

We consider algorithms that, from an arbitrarily sampling of $N$ spheres (possibly overlapping), find a close packed configuration without overlapping. These problems can be formulated as minimization problems with non-convex constraints. For such packing problems, we observe that the classical iterative Arrow-Hurwicz algorithm does not converge. We derive a novel algorithm from a multi-step variant of the Arrow-Hurwicz scheme with damping. We compare this algorithm with classical algorithms belonging to the class of linearly constrained Lagrangian methods and show that it performs better. We provide an analysis of the convergence of these algorithms in the simple case of two spheres in one spatial dimension. Finally, we investigate the behaviour of our algorithm when the number of spheres is large.
