Resonance, syzygies, and rank-$3$ Ulrich bundles on the del Pezzo threefold $V_5$

We investigate a geometric criterion for a smooth curve $C$ of genus $14$ and degree $18$ to be described as the zero locus of sections in an Ulrich bundle of rank $3$ on a del Pezzo threefold $V_5 \subset \mathbb{P}^6$. The main challenge is to read off the Pfaffian quadrics defining $V_5$ from geometric structures of $C$. We find that this problem is related to the existence of a special rank-two vector bundle on $C$ with trivial resonance. It gives a description of the image of the rational map that appeared in a work of Ciliberto-Flamini-Knutsen, for the case of degree $5$ del Pezzo threefolds. From an explicit calculation of the Betti table of such a curve, we also deduce the uniqueness of the del Pezzo threefold containing a given curve.

Koszul modules and Green's conjecture

We prove a strong vanishing result for finite length Koszul modules, and use it to derive Green's conjecture for every g-cuspidal rational curve over an algebraically closed field k with char(k) = 0 or char(k) >= (g+2)/2. As a consequence, we deduce that the general canonical curve of genus g satisfies Green's conjecture in this range. Our results are new in positive characteristic, whereas in characteristic zero they provide a different proof for theorems first obtained in two landmark papers by Voisin. Our strategy involves establishing two key results of independent interest: (1) we describe an explicit, characteristic-independent version of Hermite reciprocity for sl_2-representations; (2) we completely characterize, in arbitrary characteristics, the (non-)vanishing behavior of the syzygies of the tangential variety to a rational normal curve.

Prioritary omalous bundles on Hirzebruch surfaces

An irreducible algebraic stack is called \emph{unirational} if there exists a surjective morphism, representable by algebraic spaces, from a rational variety to an open substack. We prove unirationality of the stack of prioritary omalous bundles on Hirzebruch surfaces, which implies also the unirationality of the moduli space of omalous $H$-stable bundles for any ample line bundle $H$ on a Hirzebruch surface. To this end, we find an explicit description of the duals of omalous rank-two bundles with a vanishing condition in terms of monads. Since these bundles are prioritary, we conclude that the stack of prioritary omalous bundles on a Hirzebruch surface different from $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^1$ is dominated by an irreducible section of a Segre variety, and this linear section is rational \cite{I}. In the case of the space quadric, the stack has been explicitly described by N. Buchdahl. As a main tool we use Buchdahl's Beilinson-type spectral sequence. Monad descriptions of omalous bundles on hypersurfaces in $\mathbb P^4$, Calabi-Yau complete intersection, blowups of the projective plane and Segre varieties have been recently obtained by A. A. Henni and M. Jardim~\cite{HJ}, and monads on Hizebruch surfaces have been applied in a different context in~\cite{BBR}.

Holomorphic vector bundles on Kähler manifolds and totally geodesic foliations on Euclidean open domains

In this Note we establish a relation between sections in globally generated holomorphic vector bundles on Kähler manifolds, isotropic with respect to a non-degenerate quadratic form, and totally geodesic foliations on Euclidean open domains. We find a geometric condition for a totally geodesic foliation to originate in a holomorphic vector bundle. For codimension-two foliations, this description recovers of P. Baird and J. C. Wood. The universal objects that play a key role are the orthogonal Grassmannians.

Restricted Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles and canonical curves

We prove two results. First, we establish that the normal bundle of any smooth curve of genus 7 having maximal Clifford index is stable. Note that 7 is the smallest genus for which such a result could possibly hold. We then show that rank four Lazarsfeld-Mukai vector bundles on a curve that lies on a general K3 surface are stable. Both results have consequences for Mercat's conjecture on higher rank vector bundles on generic curves.

Green's Conjecture for curves on arbitrary K3 surfaces

Green's Conjecture predicts than one can read off special linear series on an algebraic curve, by looking at the syzygies of its canonical embedding. We extend Voisin's results on syzygies of K3 sections, to the case of K3 surfaces with arbitrary Picard lattice. This, coupled with results of Voisin and Hirschowitz-Ramanan, provides a complete solution to Green's Conjecture for smooth curves on arbitrary K3 surfaces.

Koszul cohomology and applications to moduli

We discuss recent progress on syzygies of curves, including proofs of Green's and Gonality Conjectures as well as applications of Koszul cycles to the study of the birational geometry of various moduli spaces of curves. We prove a number of new results, including a complete solution to Green's Conjecture for arbitrary hexagonal curves. Finally, we propose several new conjectures on syzygies, including a Prym-Green conjecture for l-roots of trivial bundles as well as a strong Maximal Rank Conjecture for generic curves. To appear in the Proceedings of Clay Mathematical Institute.

Remarks on syzygies of $d$-gonal curves

We apply a degenerate version of a result due to Hirschowitz, Ramanan and Voisin to verify Green and Green-Lazarsfeld conjectures over explicit open sets inside each $d$-gonal stratum of curves $X$ with $d<[g_X/2]+2$. By the same method, we verify the Green-Lazarsfeld conjecture for any curve of odd genus and maximal gonality. The proof invokes Voisin's solution to the generic Green conjecture as a key argument.

On the vanishing of higher syzygies of curves

The present paper is related to a conjecture made by Green and Lazarsfeld concerning 1-linear syzygies of curves embedded by complete linear systems of sufficiently large degrees. Given a smooth, irreducible, complex, projective curve $X$, we prove that the least integer $q$ for which the property $(M_q)$ fails for a line bundle $L$ on $X$ does not depend on $L$ as soon as its degree becomes sufficiently large. Consequently, this number is an invariant of the curve, and the statement of Green-Lazarsfeld's conjecture is equivalent to saying that this invariant equals the gonality of the curve. We verify the conjecture for plane curves, curves lying on Hirzebruch surfaces, and for generic curves having the genus sufficiently large compared to the gonality. We conclude the paper by proving that Green's canonical conjecture holds for curves lying on Hirzebruch surfaces.
