Nuclear Forces for Precision Nuclear Physics -- a collection of perspectives

This is a collection of perspective pieces contributed by the participants of the Institute of Nuclear Theory's Program on Nuclear Physics for Precision Nuclear Physics which was held virtually from April 19 to May 7, 2021. The collection represents the reflections of a vibrant and engaged community of researchers on the status of theoretical research in low-energy nuclear physics, the challenges ahead, and new ideas and strategies to make progress in nuclear structure and reaction physics, effective field theory, lattice QCD, quantum information, and quantum computing. The contributed pieces solely reflect the perspectives of the respective authors and do not represent the viewpoints of the Institute for Nuclear theory or the organizers of the program.

Precise comparison of the Gaussian expansion method and the Gamow shell model

We perform a detailed comparison of results of the Gamow Shell Model (GSM) and the Gaussian Expansion Method (GEM) supplemented by the complex scaling (CS) method for the same translationally-invariant cluster-orbital shell model (COSM) Hamiltonian. As a benchmark test, we calculate the ground state $0^{+}$ and the first excited state $2^{+}$ of mirror nuclei $^{6}$He and $^{6}$Be in the model space consisting of two valence nucleons in $p$-shell outside of a $^{4}$He core. We find a good overall agreement of results obtained in these two different approaches, also for many-body resonances.

Novel and simple description for a smooth transition from $α$-cluster wave functions to $jj$-coupling shell model wave functions

We propose an improved version of Antisymmetrized Quasi-Cluster Model (AQCM) to describe a smooth transition from the $α$-cluster wave function to the $jj$-coupling shell model wave function and apply it to the ground state of $^{12}$C. The cluster-shell transition in $^{12}$C is characterized in AQCM by only two parameters: $R$ representing the distance between $α$ clusters and the center of mass, and $Λ$ describing the break of $α$ clusters. The optimal AQCM wave function for the ground state of $^{12}$C is an intermediate state between the three-$α$ cluster state and the shell model state with the $p_{3/2}$ subshell closure configuration. The result is consistent with that of the Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics (AMD), and the optimal AQCM wave function quantitatively agrees with the AMD one, although the number of degrees of freedom in AQCM is significantly fewer.
