Emulating quantum teleportation of a Majorana zero mode qubit

Topological quantum computation based on anyons is a promising approach to achieve fault-tolerant quantum computing. The Majorana zero modes in the Kitaev chain are an example of non-Abelian anyons where braiding operations can be used to perform quantum gates. Here we perform a quantum simulation of topological quantum computing, by teleporting a qubit encoded in the Majorana zero modes of a Kitaev chain. The quantum simulation is performed by mapping the Kitaev chain to its equivalent spin version, and realizing the ground states in a superconducting quantum processor. The teleportation transfers the quantum state encoded in the spin-mapped version of the Majorana zero mode states between two Kitaev chains. The teleportation circuit is realized using only braiding operations, and can be achieved despite being restricted to Clifford gates for the Ising anyons. The Majorana encoding is a quantum error detecting code for phase flip errors, which is used to improve the average fidelity of the teleportation for six distinct states from $70.76 \pm 0.35 \% $ to $84.60 \pm 0.11 \%$, well beyond the classical bound in either case.

Characterizing coherence with quantum observables

We introduce a procedure based on quantum expectation values of measurement observables to characterize quantum coherence. Our measure allows one to quantify coherence without having to perform tomography of the quantum state, and can be directly calculated from measurement expectation values. This definition of coherence allows the decomposition into contributions corresponding to the non-classical correlations between the subsystems and localized on each subsystem. The method can also be applied to cases where the full set of measurement operators is unavailable. An estimator using the truncated measurement operators can be used to obtain lower bound to the genuine value of coherence. We illustrate the method for several bipartite systems, and show the singular behavior of the coherence measure in a spin-1 chain, characteristic of a quantum phase transition.

Cooper pair polaritons in cold fermionic atoms within a cavity

We formulate a Bardeen-Cooper-Schriffer (BCS) theory of quasiparticles in a degenerate Fermi gas strongly coupled to photons in a optical cavity. The elementary photonic excitations of the system are cavity polaritons, which consist of a cavity photon and an excitation of an atom within the Fermi sea. The excitation of the atom out of the Fermi sea leaves behind a hole, which together results in a loosely bound Cooper pair, allowing for the system to be written by a BCS wavefunction. As the density of the excitations is increased, the excited atom and hole become more strongly bound, crossing over into the molecular regime. This thus realizes an alternative BCS to BEC crossover scenario, where the participating species are quasiparticle excitations in a Fermi sea consisting of excited atoms and holes.
