Growth Histories in Bimetric Massive Gravity

We perform cosmological perturbation theory in Hassan-Rosen bimetric gravity for general homogeneous and isotropic backgrounds. In the de Sitter approximation, we obtain decoupled sets of massless and massive scalar gravitational fluctuations. Matter perturbations then evolve like in Einstein gravity. We perturb the future de Sitter regime by the ratio of matter to dark energy, producing quasi-de Sitter space. In this more general setting the massive and massless fluctuations mix. We argue that in the quasi-de Sitter regime, the growth of structure in bimetric gravity differs from that of Einstein gravity.

Higgs diphoton rate enhancement from supersymmetric physics beyond the MSSM

We show that supersymmetric "new physics" beyond the MSSM can naturally accommodate a Higgs mass near 126 GeV and enhance the signal rate in the Higgs to diphoton channel, while the signal rates in all the other Higgs decay channels coincide with Standard Model expectations, except possibly the Higgs to Z-photon channel. The "new physics" that corrects the relevant Higgs couplings can be captured by two supersymmetric effective operators. We provide a simple example of an underlying model in which these operators are simultaneously generated. The scale of "new physics" that generates these operators can be around 5 TeV or larger, and outside the reach of the LHC.

Superpotential de-sequestering in string models

Non-perturbative superpotential cross-couplings between visible sector matter and Kähler moduli can lead to significant flavour-changing neutral currents in compactifications of type IIB string theory. Here, we compute corrections to Yukawa couplings in orbifold models with chiral matter localised on D3-branes and non-perturbative effects on distant D7-branes. By evaluating a threshold correction to the D7-brane gauge coupling, we determine conditions under which the non-perturbative corrections to the Yukawa couplings appear. The flavour structure of the induced Yukawa coupling generically fails to be aligned with the tree-flavour structure. We check our results by also evaluating a correlation function of two D7-brane gauginos and a D3-brane Yukawa coupling. Finally, by calculating a string amplitude between n hidden scalars and visible matter we show how non-vanishing vacuum expectation values of distant D7-brane scalars, if present, may correct visible Yukawa couplings with a flavour structure that differs from the tree-level flavour structure.

One-Loop Kahler Metric of D-Branes at Angles

We evaluate string one-loop contributions to the Kahler metric of D-brane moduli (positions and Wilson lines), in toroidal orientifolds with branes at angles. Contributions due to bulk states in the loop are known, so we focus on the contributions due to states localized at intersections of orientifold images. We show that these quantum corrections vanish. This does not follow from the usual nonrenormalization theorems of supersymmetric field theory.

Sequestering in String Compactifications

We study the mediation of supersymmetry breaking in string compactifications whose moduli are stabilized by nonperturbative effects. We begin with a critical review of arguments for sequestering in supergravity and in string theory. We then show that geometric isolation, even in a highly warped space, is insufficient to achieve sequestering: in type IIB compactifications, nonperturbative superpotentials involving the Kahler moduli introduce cross-couplings between well-separated visible and hidden sectors. The scale of the resulting soft terms depends on the moduli stabilization scenario. In the Large Volume Scenario, nonperturbative superpotential contributions to the soft trilinear $A$ terms can introduce significant flavor violation, while in KKLT compactifications their effects are negligible. In both cases, the contributions to the $μ$ and $Bμ$ parameters cannot be ignored in general. We conclude that sequestered supersymmetry breaking is possible in nonperturbatively-stabilized compactifications only if a mechanism in addition to bulk locality suppresses superpotential cross-couplings.

Dante's Inferno

We present a simple two-field model of inflation and show how to embed it in string theory as a straightforward generalization of axion monodromy models. Phenomenologically, the predictions are equivalent to those of chaotic inflation, and in particular include observably large tensor modes. The whole high-scale large-field inflationary dynamics takes place within a region of field space that is parametrically subplanckian in diameter, hence improving our ability to control quantum corrections and achieve slow-roll inflation.

Holography of D-Brane Reconnection

Gukov, Martinec, Moore and Strominger found that the D1-D5-D5' system with the D5-D5' angle at 45 degrees admits a deformation "rho" preserving supersymmetry. Under this deformation, the D5-branes and D5'-branes reconnect along a single special Lagrangian manifold. We construct the near-horizon limit of this brane setup (for which no supergravity solution is currently known), imposing the requisite symmetries perturbatively in the deformation rho. Reducing to the three-dimensional effective gauged supergravity, we compute the scalar potential and verify the presence of a deformation with the expected properties. We compute the conformal dimensions as functions of rho. This spectrum naturally organizes into N=3 supermultiplets, corresponding to the 3/16 preserved by the brane system. We give some remarks on the symmetric orbifold CFT for Q_D5=Q_D5', outline the computation of rho-deformed correlators in this theory, and probe computations in our rho-deformed background.

On Volume Stabilization by Quantum Corrections

We discuss prospects for stabilizing the volume modulus of N=1 supersymmetric type IIB orientifold compactifications using only perturbative corrections to the Kahler potential. Concretely, we consider the known string loop corrections and tree-level alpha' corrections. They break the no-scale structure of the potential, which otherwise prohibits stabilizing the volume modulus. We argue that when combined, these corrections provide enough flexibility to stabilize the volume of the internal space without non-perturbative effects, although we are not able to present a completely explicit example within the limited set of currently available models. Furthermore, a certain amount of fine-tuning is needed to obtain a minimum at large volume.

An Orientifold with Fluxes and Branes via T-duality

String compactifications with non-abelian gauge fields localized on D-branes, with background NSNS and RR 3-form fluxes, and with non-trivial warp factors, can naturally exist within T-dual versions of type I string theory. We develop a systematic procedure to construct the effective bosonic Lagrangian of type I T-dualized along a six-torus, including the coupling to gauge multiplets on D3-branes and the modifications due to 3-form fluxes. Looking for solutions to the ten-dimensional equations of motion, we find warped products of Minkowski space and Ricci-flat internal manifolds. Once the warp factor is neglected, the resulting no-scale scalar potential of the effective four-dimensional theory combines those known for 3-form fluxes and for internal Yang-Mills fields and stabilizes many of the moduli. We perform an explicit comparison of our expressions to those obtained from N=4 gauged supergravity and find agreement. We also comment on the possibility to include D9-branes with world-volume gauge fluxes in the background with 3-form fluxes.

Calabi-Yau Fourfolds with Flux and Supersymmetry Breaking

In Calabi-Yau fourfold compactifications of M-theory with flux, we investigate the possibility of partial supersymmetry breaking in the three-dimensional effective theory. To this end, we place the effective theory in the framework of general N=2 gauged supergravities, in the special case where only translational symmetries are gauged. This allows us to extract supersymmetry-breaking conditions, and interpret them as conditions on the 4-form flux and Calabi-Yau geometry. For N=2 unbroken supersymmetry in three dimensions we recover previously known results, and we find a new condition for breaking supersymmetry from N=2 to N=1, i.e. from four to two supercharges. An example of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface in a toric variety that satisfies this condition is provided.
