Local limit laws for symbol statistics in bicomponent rational models

We study the local limit distribution of the number of occurrences of a symbol in words of length $n$ generated at random in a regular language according to a rational stochastic model. We present an analysis of the main local limits when the finite state automaton defining the stochastic model consists of two primitive components. The limit distributions depend on several parameters and conditions, such as the main constants of mean value and variance of our statistics associated with the two components, and the existence of communications from the first to the second component. The convergence rate of these results is always of order $O(n^{-1/2})$. We also prove an analogous $O(n^{-1/2})$ convergence rate to a Gaussian density of the same statistic whenever the stochastic models only consists of one (primitive) component.

Relic Antineutrino Capture on 163-Ho decaying Nuclei

The electron capture decay of the isotope 163-Ho has been proposed since a long time as a candidate for measuring the electron neutrino mass and recently the interest on this idea has been renewed. In this paper we note that a direct observation of the cosmic antineutrino background could be made using a target made of this isotope. We further discuss the requests for an experiment aiming to obtain this result.

Lowering the energy threshold of large-mass bolometric detectors

Large-mass bolometers are used in particle physics experiments to search for rare processes. The energy threshold of such detectors plays a critical role in their capability to search for dark matter interactions and rare nuclear decays. We have developed a trigger and a pulse shape algorithm based on the matched filter technique which, when applied to data from test bolometers of the CUORE experiment, lowered the energy threshold from tens of keV to the few keV region. The detection efficiency is in excess of 80%, and nearly all nonphysical pulses are rejected.
