On Larger $H_0$ Values in the CMB Dipole Direction

On the assumption that quasars (QSO) and gamma-ray bursts (GRB) represent \textit{standardisable candles}, we provide evidence that the Hubble constant $H_0$ adopts larger values in hemispheres aligned with the CMB dipole direction. If substantiated, this trend signals a departure from FLRW cosmology. In particular, QSOs show a definite trend, whereas our findings in GRBs are consistent with an isotropic Universe, but we show in a sample of GRBs calibrated with Type Ia supernovae (SN) that this conclusion may change as one focuses on GRBs more closely (mis)aligned with the CMB dipole direction. The statistical significance in QSOs alone is $\gtrsim 2 σ$ and when combined with similar trends in strong lensing, Type Ia SN and calibrated GRBs, this increases to $\sim 3 σ$. Our findings are consistent with reported discrepancies in the cosmic dipole and anisotropies in galaxy cluster scaling relations. The reported variations in $H_0$ across the sky suggest that Hubble tension may be a symptom of a deeper cosmological malaise.

Cassini and extra force constraints to nonminimally coupled gravity with screening mechanism

We consider a nonminimally coupled curvature-matter gravity theory at the Solar System scale. Both a fifth force of Yukawa type and a further non-Newtonian extra force that arises from the nonminimal coupling are present in the solar interior and in the solar atmosphere up to interplanetary space. The extra force depends on the spatial gradient of space-time curvature R. The conditions under which the effects of such forces can be screened by the chameleon mechanism and be made consistent with Cassini measurement of PPN parameter $γ$ are examined. This consistency analysis requires a specific study of Sun's dynamical contribution to the arising forces at all its layers.

Main parameters of neutron stars from quasi-periodic oscillations in low mass X-ray binaries

We investigate the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations of low-mass X-ray binaries within the Hartle-Thorne spacetime. On the basis the relativistic precession model we extract the total mass $M$, angular momentum $J$, and quadrupole moment $Q$ of a compact object in a low-mass X-ray binary by analyzing the data of the Z -source GX 5-1. In view of the recent neutron star model we compute the radius, angular velocity and other parameters of this source by imposing the observational and theoretical constraints on the mass-radius relation.

Theoretical and observational constraints on the mass-radius relations of neutron stars

We investigate theoretical and observational constraints on the mass-radius relations for neutron stars. For that purpose we consider the model of neutron stars taking into considerations strong, weak, electromagnetic and gravitational interactions in the equation of state and integrate the structure equations within the Hartle-Thorne formalism for rotating configurations. On the basis of the theoretical restrictions imposed by general relativity, mass-shedding and axisymmetric secular instabilities we calculate the upper and lower bounds for the parameters of neutron stars. Our theoretical calculations have been compared and contrasted with the observational constraints and as a result we show that the observational constraints favor stiff equations of state.

New measurements of $Ω_m$ from gamma-ray bursts

Context: Data from cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB), baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), and supernovae Ia (SNe-Ia) support a constant dark energy equation of state with $w_0 \sim -1$. Measuring the evolution of $w$ along the redshift is one of the most demanding challenges for observational cosmology. Aims: We discuss the existence of a close relation for GRBs, named Combo-relation, based on characteristic parameters of GRB phenomenology such as the prompt intrinsic peak energy $E_{p,i}$, the X-ray afterglow, the initial luminosity of the shallow phase $L_0$, the rest-frame duration $τ$ of the shallow phase, and the index of the late power-law decay $α_X$. We use it to measure $Ω_m$ and the evolution of the dark energy equation of state. We also propose a new calibration method for the same relation, which reduces the dependence on SNe Ia systematics. Methods: We have selected a sample of GRBs with 1) a measured redshift $z$; 2) a determined intrinsic prompt peak energy $E_{p,i}$, and 3) a good coverage (0.3-10) keV afterglow light curves. The fitting technique of the rest.frame (0.3-10) keV luminosity light curves represents the core of the Combo-relation. We separate the early steep decay, considered a part of the prompt emission, from the X-ray afterglow additional component. Data with the largest positive residual, identified as flares, are automatically eliminated until the p-value of the fit becomes greater than 0.3. Results: We strongly minimize the dependency of the Combo-GRB calibration on SNe Ia. We also measure a small extra-Poissonian scatter of the Combo-relation, which allows us to infer from GRBs alone $Ω_M =0.29^{+0.23}_{-0.15}$ (1$σ$) for the $Λ$CDM cosmological model, and $Ω_M =0.40^{+0.22}_{-0.16}$, $w_0 = -1.43^{+0.78}_{-0.66}$ for the flat-Universe variable equation of state case.

What can we extract from quasi-periodic oscillations?

In light of the relativistic precession model, we present here detailed analyses, extending the ones performed in the Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes. We consider the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations in the Hartle-Thorne spacetime, which describes the gravitational field of a rotating and deformed object. We derive the analytic formulas for the epicyclic frequencies in the Hartel-Thorne spacetime and by means of these frequencies we interpret the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations of low-mass X-ray binaries of the atoll and Z - sources, on the basis of the relativistic precession model. Particularly we perform analyzes for Z -source: GX 5-1. We show that the quasi-periodic oscillations data can provide information on the parameters, namely, the mass, angular momentum and quadrupole moment of the compact objects in the low-mass X-ray binaries.

GRB 090227B: the missing link between the genuine short and long GRBs

The time-resolved spectral analysis of GRB090227B, made possible by the Fermi-GBM data, allows to identify in this source the missing link between the genuine short and long GRBs. Within the Fireshell model [...] we predict genuine short GRBs: bursts with the same inner engine of the long bursts but endowed with a severely low value of the Baryon load, B<~5x10^{-5}. A first energetically predominant emission occurs at the transparency of the e+e- plasma, the Proper-GRB (P-GRB), followed by a softer emission, the extended afterglow. The typical separation between the two emissions is expected to be [...] 10^{-3}-10^{-2}s. We identify the P-GRB [...] in the first 96ms of emission, where a thermal component with [...] kT=(517+/-28)keV and a flux comparable with the non thermal part of the spectrum is observed. This non thermal component as well as the subsequent emission, where there is no evidence for a thermal spectrum, is identified with the extended afterglow. We deduce a theoretical cosmological redshift z=1.61+/-0.14. We then derive the total energy E^{tot}_{e+e-}=(2.83+/-0.15)x10^{53}erg, [...] B=(4.13+/-0.05)x10^{-5}, the Lorentz factor at transparency Γ_tr=(1.44+/-0.01)x10^4, and the intrinsic duration Δt'~0.35s. We also determine the average density of the CircumBurst Medium (CBM), <n_CBM>=(1.90+/-0.20)x10^{-5} #/cm^3. There is no evidence of beaming in the system. In view of the energetics and of the Baryon load of the source, as well as of the low interstellar medium and of the intrinsic time scale of the signal, we identify the GRB progenitor as a binary neutron star. From the recent progress in the theory of neutron stars, we obtain masses of the stars m_1=m_2=1.34M_Sun and their corresponding radii R_1=R_2=12.24km and thickness of their crusts ~0.47km, consistent with the above values of the Baryon load, of the energetics and of the time duration of the event.

GRB 110709B in the Induced Gravitational Collapse paradigm

Context: GRB110709B is the first source for which Swift BAT triggered twice, with a time separation of ~10 min. The first emission (Ep. 1) goes from 40s before the 1° trigger up to 60s after it. The second (Ep. 2) goes from 35s before the 2° trigger to 100s after it.[...] Within the Induced Gravitational Collapse (IGC) model, we assume the progenitor to be a close binary system composed of a core of an evolved star and a Neutron Star (NS). The evolved star explodes as a Supernova (SN) and ejects material that is partially accreted by the NS. We identify this process with Ep. 1. The accretion process brings the NS over its critical mass, thus gravitationally collapsing to a BH. This process leads to the GRB emission, Ep. 2.[...] Aims: We analyze the spectra and time variability of Ep. 1 and 2 and compute the relevant parameters of the binary progenitor[...] in the IGC paradigm. Methods: We perform a time-resolved spectral analysis of Ep. 1 with a blackbody (BB) plus a power-law (PL) spectral model. We analyze Ep. 2 within the Fireshell model, identifying the Proper-GRB (P-GRB) and simulating the light curve and spectrum. We establish the redshift to be z=0.75 [...]. Results: We find for Ep. 1 a BB temperature following a broken PL with time, with the PL slopes at early and late times α=0 and β=-4+/-2, respectively, and a break at t=41.21s. The total energy of Ep. 1 and 2 are E_{iso}^1=1.42x10^{53}erg and E_{iso}^2=2.43x10^{52}erg, respectively. We find at transparency a Lorentz factor Γ~173, laboratory radius of 6.04x10^{13}cm, P-GRB observed temperature kT_{P-GRB}=12.36keV, baryon load B=0.0057 and P-GRB energy E_{P-GRB}=3.44x10^{50}erg. [...] Conclusions: We interpret GRB110709B as a member of the IGC sources, together with GRB970828, GRB090618 and GRB101023. The XRT data during Ep. 2 offers an unprecedented tool for improving the diagnostic of GRBs emission.

On a novel distance indicator for Gamma-Ray Bursts associated with Supernovae

It has been proposed that the temporal coincidence of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) and a type Ib/c supernova (SN) can be explained with the concept of induced gravitational collapse (IGC), induced by the matter ejected from an SN Ib/c accreting onto a neutron star (NS). We found a standard luminosity light curve behavior in the late-time X-ray emission of this subclass of GRBs. We interpret this as the result of a common physical mechanism in this particular phase of the X-ray emission, possibly related to the creation of the NS from the SN process. Moreover, this scaling law could be a fundamental tool for estimating the redshift of GRBs that belong to this subclass of events.

Semi-Classical Isotropization of the Universe during a de Sitter phase

Semi-classical states for the Wheeler-DeWitt equation of a Bianchi type I model in the presence of a scalar field are analyzed. It is outlined how this scheme can effectively describe more general situations, where the curvature of the Bianchi type IX model and a proper potential term for the scalar field are present. The introduction of a cosmological constant term accounts for the quasi-isotropization mechanism which bridges the proposed framework with a late isotropic phase. This result makes the semi-classical Bianchi I model a plausible scenario for the Universe pre-inflationary phase.
