Pseudoscalar - sterile neutrino interactions: reconciling the cosmos with neutrino oscillations

The Short BaseLine (SBL) neutrino oscillation anomalies hint at the presence of a sterile neutrino with a mass of around 1 eV. However, such a neutrino is incompatible with cosmological data, in particular observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. However, this conclusion can change by invoking new physics. One possibility is to introduce a secret interaction in the sterile neutrino sector mediated by a light pseudoscalar. In this pseudoscalar model, CMB data prefer a sterile neutrino mass that is fully compatible with the mass ranges suggested by SBL anomalies. In addition, this model predicts a value of the Hubble parameter which is completely consistent with local measurements.

Light sterile neutrinos after BICEP-2

The recent discovery of B-modes in the polarization pattern of the Cosmic Microwave Background by the BICEP2 experiment has important implications for neutrino physics. We revisit cosmological bounds on light sterile neutrinos and show that they are compatible with all current cosmological data provided that the mass is relatively low. Using CMB data, including BICEP-2, we find an upper bound of $m_s < 0.85$ eV ($2σ$ Confidence Level). This bound is strengthened to 0.48 eV when HST measurements of $H_0$ are included. However, the inclusion of SZ cluster data from the Planck mission and weak gravitational measurements from the CFHTLenS project favours a non-zero sterile neutrino mass of $0.44^{+0.11}_{-0.16}$ eV. Short baseline neutrino oscillations, on the other hand, indicate a new mass state around 1.2 eV. This mass is highly incompatible with cosmological data if the sterile neutrino is fully thermalised ($Δχ^2>10$). However, if the sterile neutrino only partly thermalises it can be compatible with all current data, both cosmological and terrestrial.

An Appraisal of Muon Neutrino Disappearance at Short Baseline

Neutrino physics is nowadays receiving more and more attention as a possible source of information for the long standing problem of new Physics beyond the Standard Model. The recent measurements of the third mixing angle $θ_{13}$ in the standard mixing oscillation scenario encourage to pursue the still missing results on the leptonic CP violation and the absolute neutrino masses. However, several puzzling and incomplete measurements are in place which deserve an exhaustive evaluation and study. We will report about the present situation of the muon disappearance measurements at small $L/E$ in the context of the current CERN project to revitalize the neutrino field in Europe and the search for sterile neutrinos. We will then illustrate the achievements that a double muon spectrometer can attain in terms of discovery of new neutrino states, performing a newly developed analysis.

Cosmology with sterile neutrino masses from oscillation experiments

There are hints, both from cosmology and from neutrino oscillation experiments, that one or two sterile neutrinos with eV masses are favored. We consider the implications of combining data from short baseline neutrino experiments with cosmological observations. In particular we consider cosmological models where the equation of state of dark energy and the curvature are allowed to vary. We find that the consistency of results from short baseline experiments and cosmology is dependent on the cosmological data sets that are used. When the two are consistent, we find that the inclusion of information from short baseline experiments only mildly affects the preferred values of the cosmological model parameters. A universe with a cosmological constant type dark energy and zero curvature is still fully consistent with the data we use. We also report that a thermalized sterile neutrino in the 10 eV range is fully consistent with a wide range of cosmological data as long as information on the matter power spectrum in not taken into account.

3+1 and 3+2 Sterile Neutrino Fits

We present the results of fits of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data in 3+1 and 3+2 neutrino mixing schemes. In spite of the presence of a tension in the interpretation of the data, 3+1 neutrino mixing is attractive for its simplicity and for the natural correspondence of one new entity (a sterile neutrino) with a new effect (short-baseline oscillations). The allowed regions in the oscillation parameter space can be tested in near-future experiments. In the framework of 3+2 neutrino mixing there is less tension in the interpretation of the data, at the price of introducing a second sterile neutrino. Moreover, the improvement of the parameter goodness of fit is mainly a statistical effect due to an increase of the number of parameters. The CP violation in short-baseline experiments allowed in 3+2 neutrino mixing can explain the positive antinu_mu -> antinu_e signal and the negative nu_mu -> nu_e measurement in the MiniBooNE experiment. For the CP-violating phase we obtained two minima of the marginal chi^2 close to the two values where CP-violation is maximal.

First Double-Chooz Results and the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly

We investigate the possible effects of short-baseline antinu_e disappearance implied by the reactor antineutrino anomaly on the Double-Chooz determination of theta_{13} through the normalization of the initial antineutrino flux with the Bugey-4 measurement. We show that the effects are negligible and the value of theta_{13} obtained by the Double-Chooz collaboration is accurate only if Delta m^2_{41} is larger than about 3 eV^2. For smaller values of Delta m^2_{41} the short-baseline oscillations are not fully averaged at Bugey-4 and the uncertainties due to the reactor antineutrino anomaly can be of the same order of magnitude of the intrinsic Double-Chooz uncertainties.

Large Short-Baseline antinu_mu Disappearance

We analyze the LSND, KARMEN and MiniBooNE data on short-baseline antinu_mu -> antinu_e oscillations and the data on short-baseline antinu_e disappearance obtained in the Bugey-3 and CHOOZ reactor experiments in the framework of 3+1 antineutrino mixing, taking into account the MINOS observation of long-baseline antinu_mu disappearance and the KamLAND observation of very-long-baseline antinu_e disappearance. We show that the fit of the data implies that the short-baseline disappearance of antinu_mu is relatively large. We obtain a prediction of an effective amplitude sin^2 2 theta_{mu mu} >~ 0.1 for short-baseline antinu_mu disappearance generated by 0.2 <~ Delta m^2 <~ 1 eV^2, which could be measured in future experiments.

Statistical Significance of the Gallium Anomaly

We calculate the statistical significance of the anomalous deficit of electron neutrinos measured in the radioactive source experiments of the GALLEX and SAGE solar neutrino detectors taking into account the uncertainty of the detection cross section. We found that the statistical significance of the anomaly is about 3.0 sigma. A fit of the data in terms of neutrino oscillations favors at about 2.7 sigma short-baseline electron neutrino disappearance with respect to the null hypothesis of no oscillations.

Status of 3+1 Neutrino Mixing

We present an update of our analysis of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data in the framework of 3+1 neutrino mixing taking into account the recent update of MiniBooNE antineutrino data and the recent results of the MINOS search for nu_mu disappearance into sterile neutrinos (the more complicated 3+2 neutrino mixing is not needed since the CP-violating difference between MiniBooNE neutrino and antineutrino data has diminished). The results of our fits of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data including the MiniBooNE low-energy anomaly (now present both in the neutrino and antineutrino data) leads to a strong tension between appearance and disappearance data. Hence, it seems likely that the low-energy anomaly is not due to nu_mu -> nu_e transitions. Excluding the MiniBooNE low-energy anomaly, appearance and disappearance data are marginally compatible. The global analysis has the best-fit point at Delta m^2_{41} about 5.6 eV^2, which is rather large in comparison with cosmological bounds, but there are three regions within 1 sigma at Delta m^2_{41} about 1.6, 1.2, 0.91 eV^2. We also show that the data on the Gallium neutrino anomaly favor values of Delta m^2_{41} larger than about 1 eV^2.

Hint of CPT Violation in Short-Baseline Electron Neutrino Disappearance

We analyzed the electron neutrino data of the Gallium radioactive source experiments and the electron antineutrino data of the reactor Bugey and Chooz experiments in terms of neutrino oscillations allowing for a CPT-violating difference of the squared-masses and mixings of neutrinos and antineutrinos. We found that the discrepancy between the disappearance of electron neutrinos indicated by the data of the Gallium radioactive source experiments and the limits on the disappearance of electron antineutrinos given by the data of reactor experiments reveal a positive CPT-violating asymmetry of the effective neutrino and antineutrino mixing angles (with a statistical significance of about 3.5 sigma), whereas the squared-mass asymmetry is practically not bounded.

Short-Baseline antinu_mu -> antinu_e Oscillations

We analyze the recent results of the MiniBooNE short-baseline experiment on antinu_mu -> antinu_e oscillations in a minimal model-independent framework of antineutrino mixing in conjunction with the positive LSND signal and the negative KARMEN measurements. We show that the data of the three short-baseline antinu_mu -> antinu_e experiments are compatible. Taking into account also the model-independent constraints due to the limits on short-baseline antinu_e disappearance obtained in reactor antineutrino experiments, we find that the favored region of the effective oscillation parameters lies within 0.002 <~ sin^2 2 theta <~ 0.05 and 0.2 <~ Delta m^2 <~ 2 eV^2.

Short-Baseline Electron Neutrino Disappearance, Tritium Beta Decay and Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay

We consider the interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy anomaly and the Gallium radioactive source experiments anomaly in terms of short-baseline electron neutrino disappearance in the framework of 3+1 four-neutrino mixing schemes. The separate fits of MiniBooNE and Gallium data are highly compatible, with close best-fit values of the effective oscillation parameters Delta m^2 and sin^2 2 theta. The combined fit gives Delta m^2 >~ 0.1 eV^2 and 0.11 < sin^2 2 theta < 0.48 at 2 sigma. We consider also the data of the Bugey and Chooz reactor antineutrino oscillation experiments and the limits on the effective electron antineutrino mass in beta-decay obtained in the Mainz and Troitsk Tritium experiments. The fit of the data of these experiments limits the value of sin^2 2 theta below 0.10 at 2 sigma. Considering the tension between the neutrino MiniBooNE and Gallium data and the antineutrino reactor and Tritium data as a statistical fluctuation, we perform a combined fit which gives Delta m^2 \simeq 2 eV and 0.01 < sin^2 2 theta < 0.13 at 2 sigma. Assuming a hierarchy of masses m_1, m_2, m_3 << m_4, the predicted contributions of m_4 to the effective neutrino masses in beta-decay and neutrinoless double-beta-decay are, respectively, between about 0.06 and 0.49 and between about 0.003 and 0.07 eV at 2 sigma. We also consider the possibility of reconciling the tension between the neutrino MiniBooNE and Gallium data and the antineutrino reactor and Tritium data with different mixings in the neutrino and antineutrino sectors. We find a 2.6 sigma indication of a mixing angle asymmetry.

Summary report of MINSIS workshop in Madrid

Recent developments on tau detection technologies and the construction of high intensity neutrino beams open the possibility of a high precision search for non-standard μ - τ flavour transition with neutrinos at short distances. The MINSIS - Main Injector Non-Standard Interaction Search- is a proposal under discussion to realize such precision measurement. This document contains the proceedings of the workshop which took place on 10-11 December 2009 in Madrid to discuss both the physics reach as well as the experimental requirements for this proposal.

VSBL Electron Neutrino Disappearance

We consider possible indications of Very-Short-BaseLine (VSBL) electron neutrino disappearance into sterile neutrinos in MiniBooNE neutrino data and Gallium radioactive source experiments. We discuss the compatibility of such a disappearance with reactor and MiniBooNE antineutrino data. We find a tension between neutrino and antineutrino data which could be due to: 1) statistical fluctuations; 2) underestimate of systematic uncertainties; 3) exclusion of our hypothesis of VSBL nu_e disappearance; 4) a violation of CPT symmetry. Considering the first possibility, we present the results of a combined fit of all data, which indicate that P_{ee} < 1 with 97.04 CL. We consider also the possibility of CPT violation, which leads to the best-fit value A_{ee}^{CPT,bf} = -0.17 for the asymmetry of the nu_e and antinu_e survival probabilities and A_{ee}^{CPT} < 0 at 99.7 CL.

The NOMAD Experiment : Status Report

The NOMAD experiment has been designed to search for neutrino-tau appearance in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam . The detector is now completed and has been further improved. All subdetectors are working well. The experiment, where the search for oscillation is based on kinematical criteria, will reach the sensitivity dm2 > 0.7 eV2 for maximal mixing and dm2 > 50 eV2 for mixing angles sin2 2θ> 3.8E-4 after 2 years of running, making possible to explore a region of cosmological interest. Preliminary measurements are presented from the 1994 and 1995 data samples.
