Predator-Prey Interactions, Age Structures and Delay Equations

A general framework for age-structured predator-prey systems is introduced. Individuals are distinguished into two classes, juveniles and adults, and several possible interactions are considered. The initial system of partial differential equations is reduced to a system of (neutral) delay differential equations with one or two delays. Thanks to this approach, physically correct models for predator-prey with delay are provided. Previous models are considered and analysed in view of the above results. A Rosenzweig-MacArthur model with delay is presented as an example.

Raman 2D-Band Splitting in Graphene: Theory and Experiment

We present a systematic experimental and theoretical study of the two-phonon (2D) Raman scattering in graphene under uniaxial tension. The external perturbation unveils that the 2D mode excited with 785nm has a complex line-shape mainly due to the contribution of two distinct double resonance scattering processes (inner and outer) in the Raman signal. The splitting depends on the direction of the applied strain and the polarization of the incident light. The results give new insight into the nature of the 2D band and have significant implications for the use of graphene as reinforcement in composites since the 2D mode is crucial to assess how effectively graphene uptakes an applied stress or strain.

Splitting of the Raman $2D$ band of graphene subjected to strain

The Raman $2D$-band -important for the analysis of graphene- shows a splitting for uniaxial strain. The splitting depends on the strength and direction of the applied strain and on the polarization of the incident and outgoing light. We expand the double-resonance Raman model in order to explain the strain direction dependence and the polarization dependence of the splitting. The analysis of this splitting gives new insight into the origin of the $2D$-band. Our prediction of the strain direction and polarization dependence agrees well with recent experiments.

Symmetry properties of vibrational modes in graphene nanoribbons

We present symmetry properties of the lattice vibrations of graphene nanoribbons with pure armchair (AGNR) and zigzag edges (ZGNR). In non-symmorphic nanoribbons the phonon modes at the edge of the Brillouin zone are twofold degenerate, whereas the phonon modes in symmorphic nanoribbons are non-degenerate. We identified the Raman-active and infrared-active modes. We predict 3N and 3(N+1) Raman-active modes for N-ZGNRs and N-AGNRs, respectively (N is the number of dimers per unit cell). These modes can be used for the experimental characterization of graphene nanoribbons. Calculations based on density functional theory suggest that the frequency splitting of the LO and TO in AGNRs (corresponding to the E2g mode in graphene) exhibits characteristic width and family dependence. Further, all graphene nanoribbons have a Raman-active breathing-like mode, the frequency of which is inversely proportional to the nanoribbon width and thus might be used for experimental determination of the width of graphene nanoribbons.

The two-dimensional Brillouin zone of uniaxially strained graphene

We present an in-depth analysis of the electronic and vibrational band structure of uniaxially strained graphene by ab-initio calculations. Depending on the direction and amount of strain, the Fermi crossing moves away from the $K$-point. However, graphene remains semimetallic under small strains. The deformation of the Dirac cone near the $K$-point gives rise to a broadening of the 2D Raman mode. In spite of specific changes in the electronic and vibrational band structure the strain-induced frequency shifts of the Raman active E2g and 2D modes are independent of the direction of strain. Thus, the amount of strain can be directly determined from a single Raman measurement.

Vibrational properties of graphene nanoribbons by first-principles calculations

We investigated the vibrational properties of graphene nanoribbons by means of first-principles calculations on the basis of density functional theory. We confirm that the phonon modes of graphene nanoribbons with armchair and zigzag type edges can be interpreted as fundamental oscillations and their overtones. These show a characteristic dependence on the nanoribbon width. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a mapping of the calculated Gamma-point phonon frequencies of nanoribbons onto the phonon dispersion of graphene corresponds to an "unfolding" of nanoribbons' Brillouin zone onto that of graphene. We consider the influence of spin states with respect to the phonon spectra of zigzag nanoribbons and provide comparisons of our results with past studies.
