Cohomology of generalised configuration spaces of points on $\mathbb{R}^r$

We compute the cohomology ring of a generalised type of configuration space of points in $\mathbb{R}^r$. This configuration space is indexed by a graph. In the case the graph is complete the result is known and it is due to Arnold and Cohen. However, our computations give a generalisation to any graph and an alternative proof of the classical result. Moreover, we show that there are deletion-contraction short exact sequences for this cohomology rings.

Graph cohomologies and rational homotopy type of configuration spaces

We compare the cohomology complex defined by Baranovsky and Sazdanović, that is the $E_{1}$ page of a spectral sequence converging to the homology of the configuration space depending on a graph, with the rational model for the configuration space given by Kriz and Totaro. In particular we generalize the rational model to any graph and to an algebra over any field. We show that, in the case of configuration spaces of point on a even dimensional manifold, the dual of the Baranovsky and Sazdanović's complex is quasi equivalent to this generalized version of the Kriz's model.

A Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg theorem for cyclic homology

Let $A$ be a commutative algebra over the field ${\mathbb F}_2 = {\mathbb Z}/2$. We show that there is a natural algebra homomorphism $\ell (A) \to HC^-_*(A)$ which is an isomorphism when $A$ is a smooth algebra. Thus, the functor $\ell$ can be viewed as an approximation of negative cyclic homology and ordinary cyclic homology $HC_*(A)$ is a natural $\ell (A)$-module. In general, there is a spectral sequence $E^2 = L_*(\ell )(A) \Rightarrow HC_*^- (A)$. We find associated approximation functors $\ell^+$ and $\ell^{per}$ for ordinary cyclic homology and periodic cyclic homology, and set up their spectral sequences. Finally, we discuss universality of the approximations.

Divisor braids

We study a novel type of braid groups on a closed orientable surface $Σ$. These are fundamental groups of certain manifolds that are hybrids between symmetric products and configuration spaces of points on $Σ$; a class of examples arises naturally in gauge theory, as moduli spaces of vortices in toric fibre bundles over $Σ$. The elements of these braid groups, which we call divisor braids, have coloured strands that are allowed to intersect according to rules specified by a graph $Γ$. In situations where there is more than one strand of each colour, we show that the corresponding braid group admits a metabelian presentation as a central extension of the free Abelian group $H_1(Σ;\mathbb{Z})^{\oplus r}$, where $r$ is the number of colours, and describe its Abelian commutator. This computation relies crucially on producing a link invariant (of closed divisor braids) in the three-manifold $S^1 \times Σ$ for each graph $Γ$. We also describe the von Neumann algebras associated to these groups in terms of rings that are familiar from noncommutative geometry.

Pairs of pants, Pochhammer curves and $L^2$-invariants

We propose an intuitive interpretation for nontrivial $L^2$-Betti numbers of compact Riemann surfaces in terms of certain loops in embedded pairs of pants. This description uses twisted homology associated to the Hurewicz map of the surface, and it satisfies a sewing property with respect to a large class of pair-of-pants decompositions. Applications to supersymmetric quantum mechanics incorporating Aharonov-Bohm phases are briefly discussed, for both point particles and topological solitons (abelian and non-abelian vortices) in two dimensions.

On cyclic fixed points of spectra

For a finite p-group G and a bounded below G-spectrum X of finite type mod p, the G-equivariant Segal conjecture for X asserts that the canonical map X^G --> X^{hG} is a p-adic equivalence. Let C_{p^n} be the cyclic group of order p^n. We show that if the C_p Segal conjecture holds for a C_{p^n} spectrum X, as well as for each of its C_{p^e} geometric fixed points for 0 < e < n, then then C_{p^n} Segal conjecture holds for X. Similar results hold for weaker forms of the Segal conjecture, asking only that the canonical map induces an equivalence in sufficiently high degrees, on homotopy groups with suitable finite coefficients.

On the curvature of vortex moduli spaces

We use algebraic topology to investigate local curvature properties of the moduli spaces of gauged vortices on a closed Riemann surface. After computing the homotopy type of the universal cover of the moduli spaces (which are symmetric powers of the surface), we prove that, for genus g>1, the holomorphic bisectional curvature of the vortex metrics cannot always be nonnegative in the multivortex case, and this property extends to all Kaehler metrics on certain symmetric powers. Our result rules out an established and natural conjecture on the geometry of the moduli spaces.

A generalization of the stable EHP spectral sequence

For any vector bundle, we define an inverse system of spectra. In the case of a trivial bundle over a point, the homotopy groups of the filtration quotients give rise to the stable EHP spectral sequence, as was shown by Mahowald. The limit was determined by Lin. We also obtain a spectral sequence and show strong convergence in certain special cases. For compact base spaces, we obtain a generalization of Lin's theorem. In the case of the universal bundle over BO, we can also determine the limit by means of an Adams spectral sequence. This turns out to be quite different from the compact case. We also obtain partial results for the universal bundle over BSO.

A geometric interpretation of the homotopy groups of the cobordism category

The classifying space of the embedded cobordism category has been identified in by Galatius, Tillmann, Madsen, and Weiss as the infinite loop space of a certain Thom spectrum. This identifies the set of path components with the classical cobordism group. In this paper, we give a geometric interpretation of the higher homotopy groups as certain cobordism groups where all manifolds are now equipped with a set of orthonormal sections in the tangent bundle. We also give a description of the fundamental group as a free group with a set of geometrically intuitive relations.

Cobordism obstructions to independent vector fields

We define an invariant for the existence of r pointwise linearly independent sections in the tangent bundle of a closed manifold. For low values of r, explicit computations of the homotopy groups of certain Thom spectra combined with classical obstruction theory identifies this invariant as the top obstruction to the existence of the desired sections. In particular, this shows that the top obstruction is an invariant of the underlying manifold in these cases, which is not true in general. The invariant is related to cobordism theory and this gives rise to an identification of the invariant in terms of well-known invariants. As a corollary to the computations, we can also compute low-dimensional homotopy groups of the Thom spectra studied by Galatius, Tillmann, Madsen, and Weiss.
