A boundary feedback analysis for input-to-state-stabilisation of non-uniform linear hyperbolic systems of balance laws with additive disturbances

A boundary feedback stabilisation problem of non-uniform linear hyperbolic systems of balance laws with additive disturbance is discussed. A continuous and a corresponding discrete Lyapunov function is defined. Using an input-to-state-stability (ISS) $ L^2- $Lyapunov function, the decay of solutions of linear systems of balance laws is proved. In the discrete framework, a first-order finite volume scheme is employed. In such cases, the decay rates can be explicitly derived. The main objective is to prove the Lyapunov stability for the $L^2$-norm for linear hyperbolic systems of balance laws with additive disturbance both analytically and numerically. Theoretical results are demonstrated by using numerical computations.

An analysis of the input-to-state-stabilisation of linear hyperbolic systems of balance laws with boundary disturbances

In this paper, a linear hyperbolic system of balance laws with boundary disturbances in one dimension is considered. An explicit candidate Input-to-State Stability (ISS)-Lyapunov function in $ L^2- $norm is considered and discretised to investigate conditions for ISS of the discrete system as well. Finally, experimental results on test examples including the Saint-Venant equations with boundary disturbances are presented. The numerical results demonstrate the expected theoretical decay of the Lyapunov function.

The effect of artificial viscosity on numerical boundary feedback control of linear hyperbolic systems

A numerical analysis of the effect of artificial viscosity is undertaken in order to understand the effect of numerical diffusion on numerical boundary feedback control. The analysis is undertaken on the linear hyperbolic systems discretised using the upwind scheme. The upwind scheme solves the advection-diffusion equation with up to second-order accuracy. The analysis shows that the upwind scheme with CFL equal to one gives the expected theoretical decay up to first-order. On the other hand the upwind scheme with CFL less than one gives decay depending on the second derivative of the data and the CFL number. Further the decay rates deteriorate if the second derivatives of the solution are small. Thus the decay rates computed by the numerical schemes tend to be higher in comparison to the theoretical prediction. Computations on test cases which include isothermal Euler and the St Venant Equations confirm the analytical results.

Simultaneous Identification of Coefficient and Initial State for One-Dimensional Heat Equation from Boundary Control and Measurement

In this paper, we consider simultaneous reconstruction of the diffusion coefficient and initial state for a one-dimensional heat equation through boundary control and measurement. The boundary measurement is known to make the system exactly observable, and both coefficient and initial state are shown to be identifiable by this measurement. By a Dirichlet series representation for observation, we can transform the problem into an inverse process of reconstruction of the spectrum and coefficients for Dirichlet series in terms of observation. This happens to be the reconstruction of spectral data for an exponential sequence with measurement error. This enables us to develop an algorithm based on the matrix pencil method in signal analysis. An error analysis is made for the proposed method. The numerical simulations are presented to verify the proposed algorithm.

Simultaneous Identification of Damping Coefficient and Initial Value in PDEs from boundary measurement

In this paper, the simultaneous identification of damping or anti-damping coefficient and initial value for some PDEs is considered. An identification algorithm is proposed based on the fact that the output of system happens to be decomposed into a product of an exponential function and a periodic function. The former contains information of the damping coefficient, while the latter does not. The convergence and error analysis are also developed. Three examples, namely an anti-stable wave equation with boundary anti-damping, the Schrödinger equation with internal anti-damping, and two connected strings with middle joint anti-damping, are investigated and demonstrated by numerical simulations to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
