Stable Boundary Conditions and Discretization for PN Equations

A solution to the linear Boltzmann equation satisfies an energy bound, which reflects a natural fact: The energy of particles in a finite volume is bounded in time by the energy of particles initially occupying the volume augmented by the energy transported into the volume by particles entering the volume over time. In this paper, we present boundary conditions (BCs) for the spherical harmonic (PN) approximation, which ensure that this fundamental energy bound is satisfied by the PN approximation. Our BCs are compatible with the characteristic waves of PN equations and determine the incoming waves uniquely. Both, energy bound and compatibility, are shown based on abstract formulations of PN equations and BCs to isolate the necessary structures and properties. The BCs are derived from a Marshak type formulation of BC and base on a non-classical even/odd-classification of spherical harmonic functions and a stabilization step, which is similar to the truncation of the series expansion in the PN method. We show that summation by parts (SBP) finite differences on staggered grids in space and the method of simultaneous approximation terms (SAT) allows to maintain the energy bound also on the semi-discrete level.

On the Holway-Weiss Debate: Convergence of the Grad-Moment-Expansion in Kinetic Gas Theory

Moment expansions are used as model reduction technique in kinetic gas theory to approximate the Boltzmann equation. Rarefied gas models based on so-called moment equations became increasingly popular recently. However, in a seminal paper by Holway [Phys. Fluids 7/6, (1965)] a fundamental restriction on the existence of the expansion was used to explain sub-shock behavior of shock profile solutions obtained by moment equations. Later, Weiss [Phys. Fluids 8/6, (1996)] argued that this restriction does not exist. We will revisit and discuss their findings and explain that both arguments have a correct and incorrect part. While a general convergence restriction for moment expansions does exist, it cannot be attributed to sub-shock solutions. We will also discuss the implications of the restriction and give some numerical evidence for our considerations.

Relations between WENO3 and Third-order Limiting in Finite Volume Methods

Weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) and finite volume (FV) methods employ different philosophies in their way to perform limiting. We show that a generalized view on limiter functions, which considers a two-dimensional, rather than a one-dimensional dependence on the slopes in neighboring cells, allows to write WENO3 and $3^\text{rd}$-order FV schemes in the same fashion. Within this framework, it becomes apparent that the classical approach of FV limiters to only consider ratios of the slopes in neighboring cells, is overly restrictive. The hope of this new perspective is to establish new connections between WENO3 and FV limiter functions, which may give rise to improvements for the limiting behavior in both approaches.

Model Reduction of Kinetic Equations by Operator Projection

By a further study of the mechanism of the hyperbolic regularization of the moment system for Boltzmann equation proposed in [Z. Cai, Y. Fan, R. Li, Comm. Math. Sci. 11(2): 547-571, 2013], we point out that the key point is treating the time and space derivative in the same way. Based on this understanding, a uniform framework to derive globally hyperbolic moment systems from kinetic equations using an operator projection method is proposed. The framework is so concise and clear that it can be treated as an algorithm with four inputs to derive hyperbolic moment system by routine calculations. Almost all existing globally hyperbolic moment system can be included in the framework, as well as some new moment system including globally hyperbolic regularized versions of Grad ordered moment system and a multidimensional extension of the quadrature-based moment system.

On Third-Order Limiter Functions for Finite Volume Methods

In this article, we propose a finite volume limiter function for a reconstruction on the three-point stencil. Compared to classical limiter functions in the MUSCL framework, which yield $2^{\text{nd}}$-order accuracy, the new limiter is $3^\text{rd}$-order accurate for smooth solutions. In an earlier work, such a $3^\text{rd}$-order limiter function was proposed and showed successful results [2]. However, it came with unspecified parameters. We close this gap by giving information on these parameters.
