Experimental evidence of effective <111> atomic exchanges in a B2 intermetallic alloy

We report on an atomic-scale X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy study on Fe-rich FeAl in the B2-ordered regime revealing effective <111>-exchanges of atoms on the Al-sublattice. The diffusion mechanism responsible for these exchanges is the dominating process for chemical diffusion and therefore controls long-range material transport in the system. Comparison with previous atomistic results shows that the dominance of further exchanges can be characteristic at moderate temperatures where the system is highly ordered.

Acceleration of atomic dynamics due to localized energy depositions under X-ray irradiation

The effect of the absorption of hard X-ray photons on the solid-state dynamics, at energies below the defect creation threshold, is considered. First, it is shown that due to the sensitivity to parameter choices, the present state of the theoretical description of photon-electron-lattice coupling cannot decide on whether the local energy deposition due to the absorption of single photons leads to an acceleration of atomic dynamics at fluences before macroscopic effects due to sample heating set in. Second, a direct study of the dynamics under different incident photon fluxes by atomic-scale X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (aXPCS) is reported, which provides an upper bound of 0.005 additional atomic jumps per absorbed photon of 8 keV. The relevance of such considerations for emergent experimental methods, such as studying atomic dynamics using X-rays as probes, is pointed out.

Studies of atomic diffusion in Ni-Pt solid solution by x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy

Atomic scale x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (aXPCS) was used to study atomic diffusion in the Ni97 Pt3 solid solution with both a single crystal and a polycrystalline sample. Different jump diffusion models are discussed using experimental results and Monte Carlo simulations. The sensitivity of aXPCS experiments to short-range order (in this case governed by a strong Pt-Pt repulsive force) is demonstrated. The activation energy of 2.93(10) eV as well as diffusivities in the range of 10-23 m2 s-1 at 830 K agree very well with the results of tracer diffusion studies at much higher temperatures.
