Universal quantum computing using electro-nuclear wavefunctions of rare-earth ions

We propose a scheme for universal quantum computing based on Kramers rare-earth ions. Their nuclear spins in the presence of a Zeeman-split electronic crystal field ground state act as 'passive' qubits which store quantum information. The qubits can be activated optically by fast coherent transitions to excited crystal field states with a magnetic moment. The dipole interaction between these states is used to implement CNOT gates. We compare our proposal with a similar one based on phosphorus donor atoms in silicon and discuss the significantly improved CNOT gate time as compared to rare-earth implementations via the slower dipole blockade.

Optomechanical Self-Oscillations in an Anharmonic Potential: Engineering a Nonclassical Steady State

We study self-oscillations of an optomechanical system, where coherent mechanical oscillations are induced by a driven optical or microwave cavity, for the case of an anharmonic mechanical oscillator potential. A semiclassical analytical model is developed to characterize the limit cycle for large mechanical amplitudes corresponding to a weak nonlinearity. As a result, we predict conditions to achieve subpoissonian phonon statistics in the steady state, indicating classically forbidden behavior. We compare with numerical simulations and find very good agreement. Our model is quite general and can be applied to other physical systems such as trapped ions or superconducting circuits.

Phase-sensitive SQUIDs based on the 3D topological insulator HgTe

Three-dimensional topological insulators represent a new class of materials in which transport is governed by Dirac surface states while the bulk remains insulating. Due to helical spin polarization of the surface states, the coupling of a 3D topological insulator to a nearby superconductor is expected to generate unconventional proximity induced $p$-wave superconductivity. We report here on the development and measurements of SQUIDs on the surface of strained HgTe, a 3D topological insulator, as a potential tool to investigate this effect.
