Non-adiabatic Strong Field Ionization of Atomic Hydrogen

We present experimental data on the non-adiabatic strong field ionization of atomic hydrogen using elliptically polarized femtosecond laser pulses at a central wavelength of 390 nm. Our measured results are in very good agreement with a numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). Experiment and TDSE show four above-threshold ionization (ATI) peaks in the electron's energy spectrum. The most probable emission angle (also known as 'attoclock-offset angle' or 'streaking angle') is found to increase with energy, a trend that is opposite to standard predictions based on Coulomb interaction with the ion. We show that this increase of deflection-angle can be explained by a model that includes non-adiabatic corrections of the initial momentum distribution at the tunnel exit and non-adiabatic corrections of the tunnel exit position itself.

Magnetic-field effect in high-order above-threshold ionization

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the influence of the magnetic component of an electromagnetic field on high-order above-threshold ionization of xenon atoms driven by ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses. The nondipole shift of the electron momentum distribution along the light-propagation direction for high energy electrons beyond the classical cutoff is found to be vastly different from that below the cutoff. A V-shape structure in the momentum dependence of the nondipole shift above the cutoff is identified for the first time. With the help of classical and quantum-orbit analysis, we show that large-angle rescattering of the electrons strongly alters the partitioning of the photon momentum between electron and ion. The sensitivity of the observed nondipole shift to the electronic structure of the target atom is confirmed by three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation simulations for different model potentials.

Theory of Subcycle Linear Momentum Transfer in Strong-Field Tunneling Ionization

Interaction of a strong laser pulse with matter transfers not only energy but also linear momentum of the photons. Recent experimental advances have made it possible to detect the small amount of linear momentum delivered to the photoelectrons in strong-field ionization of atoms. We present numerical simulations as well as an analytical description of the subcycle phase (or time) resolved momentum transfer to an atom accessible by an attoclock protocol. We show that the light-field-induced momentum transfer is remarkably sensitive to properties of the ultrashort laser pulse such as its carrier-envelope phase and ellipticity. Moreover, we show that the subcycle resolved linear momentum transfer can provide novel insights into the interplay between nonadiabatic and nondipole effects in strong-field ionization. This work paves the way towards the investigation of the so-far unexplored time-resolved nondipole nonadiabatic tunneling dynamics.

Gouy's Phase Anomaly in Electron Waves Produced by Strong-Field Ionization

Ionization of atoms by linearly polarized strong laser fields produces cylindrically symmetric photoelectron momentum distributions that exhibit modulations due to the interference of outgoing electron trajectories. For a faithful modeling, it is essential to include previously overlooked phase jumps occurring when trajectories pass through focal points. Such phase jumps are known as Gouy's phase anomaly in optics or as Maslov phases in semiclassical theory. Most importantly, because of Coulomb focusing in three dimensions, one out of two trajectories in photoelectron holography goes through a focal point as it crosses the symmetry axis in momentum space. In addition, there exist observable Maslov phases already in two dimensions. Clustering algorithms enable us to implement a semiclassical model with the correct preexponential factor that affects both the weight and the phase of each trajectory. We also derive a simple rule to relate two-dimensional and three-dimensional models. It explains the shifted interference fringes and weaker high-energy yield in three dimensions. The results are in excellent agreement with solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Double-slit photoelectron interference in strong-field ionization of the neon dimer

Wave-particle duality is an inherent peculiarity of the quantum world. The double-slit experiment has been frequently used for understanding different aspects of this fundamental concept. The occurrence of interference rests on the lack of which-way information and on the absence of decoherence mechanisms, which could scramble the wave fronts. In this letter, we report on the observation of two-center interference in the molecular frame photoelectron momentum distribution upon ionization of the neon dimer by a strong laser field. Postselection of ions, which were measured in coincidence with electrons, allowed choosing the symmetry of the continuum electronic wave function, leading to observation of both, gerade and ungerade, types of interference.

Molecular imaging using high-order harmonic generation and above-threshold ionization

Accurate molecular imaging via high-order harmonic generation relies on comparing the harmonic emission from a molecule and an adequate reference system. However, an ideal reference atom with the same ionization properties as the molecule does not always exist. We show that for suitably designed, very short laser pulses, a one-to-one mapping between high-order harmonic frequencies and electron momenta in above-threshold ionization exists. Comparing molecular and atomic momentum distributions then provides the electron return amplitude in the molecule for every harmonic frequency. We show that the method retrieves the molecular recombination transition moments highly accurately, even with suboptimal reference atoms.

Two-center interference and ellipticity in high-order harmonic generation from H$_2^+$

We present a theoretical investigation into the two-center interference in aligned H$_2^+$. The influence of the laser field on the recombination step is investigated by comparing laser-induced harmonic generation with harmonic generation from field-free collisions of Gaussian wave packets with the core. We find that for different Gaussian wave packets colliding with the molecule, the interference minimum occurs at the same alignment angle. The same result is obtained for the laser-induced spectrum when only a single electronic trajectory per harmonic contributes. When multiple electronic trajectories contribute, we find an effect on the minimum position because the interference between short and long trajectories is alignment-dependent. The two-center interference and the influence of the Coulombic potential are clearly seen not only in the harmonic intensity and phase but also in the polarization direction and ellipticity. We observe significant ellipticity of the emitted radiation around the two-center interference minimum.
