A Brief Introduction to the Adomian Decomposition Method, with Applications in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The Adomian Decomposition Method (ADM) is a very effective approach for solving broad classes of nonlinear partial and ordinary differential equations, with important applications in different fields of applied mathematics, engineering, physics and biology. It is the goal of the present paper to provide a clear and pedagogical introduction to the Adomian Decomposition Method and to some of its applications. In particular, we focus our attention to a number of standard first-order ordinary differential equations (the linear, Bernoulli, Riccati, and Abel) with arbitrary coefficients, and present in detail the Adomian method for obtaining their solutions. In each case we compare the Adomian solution with the exact solution of some particular differential equations, and we show their complete equivalence. The second order and the fifth order ordinary differential equations are also considered. An important extension of the standard ADM, the Laplace-Adomian Decomposition Method is also introduced through the investigation of the solutions of a specific second order nonlinear differential equation. We also present the applications of the method to the Fisher-Kolmogorov second order partial nonlinear differential equation, which plays an important role in the description of many physical processes, as well as three important applications in astronomy and astrophysics, related to the determination of the solutions of the Kepler equation, of the Lane-Emden equation, and of the general relativistic equation describing the motion of massive particles in the spherically symmetric and static Schwarzschild geometry.

A simple computational approach to the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) epidemic model via the Laplace-Adomian Decomposition Method

The Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) epidemic model is extensively used for the study of the spread of infectious diseases. Even that the exact solution of the model can be obtained in an exact parametric form, in order to perform the comparison with the epidemiological data a simple but highly accurate representation of the time evolution of the SIR compartments would be very useful. In the present paper we obtain a series representation of the solution of the SIR model by using the Laplace-Adomian Decomposition Method to solve the basic evolution equation of the model. The solutions are expressed in the form of infinite series. The series representations of the time evolution of the SIR compartments are compared with the exact numerical solutions of the model. We find that there is a good agreement between the Laplace-Adomian semianalytical solutions containing only three terms, and the numerical results.

Series solution of the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) epidemic model with vital dynamics via the Adomian and Laplace-Adomian Decomposition Methods

The Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) epidemic model as well as its generalizations are extensively used for the study of the spread of infectious diseases, and for the understanding of the dynamical evolution of epidemics. From SIR type models only the model without vital dynamics has an exact analytic solution, which can be obtained in an exact parametric form. The SIR model with vital dynamics, the simplest extension of the basic SIR model, does not admit a closed form representation of the solution. However, in order to perform the comparison with the epidemiological data accurate representations of the time evolution of the SIR model with vital dynamics would be very useful. In the present paper, we obtain first the basic evolution equation of the SIR model with vital dynamics, which is given by a strongly nonlinear second order differential equation. Then we obtain a series representation of the solution of the model, by using the Adomian and Laplace-Adomian Decomposition Methods to solve the dynamical evolution equation of the model. The solutions are expressed in the form of infinite series. The series representations of the time evolution of the SIR model with vital dynamics are compared with the exact numerical solutions of the model, and we find that, at least for a specific range of parameters, there is a good agreement between the Adomian and Laplace-Adomian semianalytical solutions, containing only a small number of terms, and the numerical results.

The effects of the dark energy on the static Schrödinger-Newton system -- an Adomian Decomposition Method and Padé approximants based approach

The Schrödinger-Newton system is a nonlinear system obtained by coupling together the linear Schrödinger equation of quantum mechanics with the Poisson equation of Newtonian mechanics. In the present work we will investigate the effects of a cosmological constant (dark energy or vacuum fluctuation) on the Schrödinger-Newton system, by modifying the Poisson equation through the addition of a new term. The corresponding Schrödinger-Newton-$Λ$ system cannot be solved exactly, and therefore for its study one must resort to either numerical or semianalytical methods. In order to obtain a semianalytical solution of the system we apply the Adomian Decomposition Method, a very powerful method used for solving a large class of nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations. Moreover, the Adomian series are transformed into rational functions by using the Padé approximants. The semianalytical approximation is compared with the full numerical solution, and the effects of the dark energy on the structure of the Newtonian quantum system are investigated in detail.

Vortex solutions in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates via the Adomian Decomposition Method

We study the dynamics of vortices with arbitrary topological charges in weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates using the Adomian Decomposition Method to solve the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation in polar coordinates. The solutions of the vortex equation are expressed in the form of infinite power series. The power series representations are compared with the exact numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the uniform and the harmonic potential, respectively. We find that there is a good agreement between the analytical and the numerical results.

On the integrability of the Abel and of the extended Liénard equations

We present some exact integrability cases of the extended Liénard equation $y^{\prime \prime }+f\left( y\right) \left(y^{\prime }\right)^{n}+k\left( y\right) \left(y^{\prime }\right)^{m}+g\left(y\right) y^{\prime }+h\left( y\right) =0$, with $n>0$ and $m>0$ arbitrary constants, while $f(y)$, $k(y)$, $g(y)$, and $h(y)$ are arbitrary functions. The solutions are obtained by transforming the equation Liénard equation to an equivalent first kind first order Abel type equation given by $\frac{dv}{dy} =f\left( y\right) v^{3-n}+k\left( y\right) v^{3-m}+g\left( y\right) v^{2}+h\left( y\right) v^{3}$, with $v=1/y^{\prime }$. As a first step in our study we obtain three integrability cases of the extended quadratic-cubic Liénard equation, corresponding to $n=2$ and $m=3$, by assuming that particular solutions of the associated Abel equation are known. Under this assumption the general solutions of the Abel and Liénard equations with coefficients satisfying some differential conditions can be obtained in an exact closed form. With the use of the Chiellini integrability condition, we show that if a particular solution of the Abel equation is known, the general solution of the extended quadratic cubic Liénard equation can be obtained by quadratures. The Chiellini integrability condition is extended to generalized Abel equations with $g(y)\equiv 0$ and $h(y)\equiv 0$, and arbitrary $n$ and $m$, thus allowing to obtain the general solution of the corresponding Liénard equation. The application of the generalized Chiellini condition to the case of the reduced Riccati equation is also considered.

Jacobi stability analysis of scalar field models with minimal coupling to gravity in a cosmological background

We perform the study of the stability of the cosmological scalar field models, by using the Jacobi stability analysis, or the Kosambi-Cartan-Chern (KCC) theory. In the KCC approach we describe the time evolution of the scalar field cosmologies in geometric terms, by performing a "second geometrization", by considering them as paths of a semispray. By introducing a non-linear connection and a Berwald type connection associated to the Friedmann and Klein-Gordon equations, five geometrical invariants can be constructed, with the second invariant giving the Jacobi stability of the cosmological model. We obtain all the relevant geometric quantities, and we formulate the condition of the Jacobi stability for scalar field cosmologies in the second order formalism. As an application of the developed methods we consider the Jacobi stability properties of the scalar fields with exponential and Higgs type potential. We find that the Universe dominated by a scalar field exponential potential is in Jacobi unstable state, while the cosmological evolution in the presence of Higgs fields has alternating stable and unstable phases. By using the standard first order formulation of the cosmological models as dynamical systems we have investigated the stability of the phantom quintessence and tachyonic scalar fields, by lifting the first order system to the tangent bundle. It turns out that in the presence of a power law potential both these models are Jacobi unstable during the entire cosmological evolution.
