Unrestricted deformations of thin elastic structures interacting with fluids

In this paper we discuss the motion of a beam in interaction with fluids. We allow the beam to move freely in all coordinate directions. We consider the case of a beam situated in between two different fluids as well as the case where the beam is attached only to one fluid. In both cases the fluid-domain is time changing. The fluid is governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The beam is elastic and governed by a hyperbolic partial differential equation. In order to allow for large deformations the elastic potential of the beam is non-quadratic and naturally possesses a non-convex state space. We derive the existence of weak-solutions up to the point of a potential collision.

A space-time relaxation for $L^1$ optimal control problems

We introduce a vertical type relaxation for optimal control problems which only have $L^1$-coercivity for their controls. Usually such problems feature both concentration and oscillation effects at the same time. We propose relaxing to an associated problem in space-time, where the controls can be considered bounded in $L^\infty$, greatly simplifying any analysis. In this relaxation, concentrations are transformed into vertical parts and oscillations can be dealt with using Young-measures. This technique can be extended to similar problems on infinite-dimensional spaces.

A variational approach to hyperbolic evolutions and fluid-structure interactions

We introduce a two time-scale scheme which allows to extend the method of minimizing movements to hyperbolic problems. This method is used to show the existence of weak solutions to a fluid-structure interaction problem between a nonlinear, visco-elastic, $n$-dimensional bulk solid governed by a hyperbolic evolution and an incompressible fluid governed by the ($n$-dimensional) Navier-Stokes equations for $n\geq 2$.

Gradient Young measures generated by quasiconformal maps in the plane

In this contribution, we completely and explicitly characterize Young measures generated by gradients of quasiconformal maps in the plane. By doing so, we generalize the results of Astala and Faraco \cite{AstalaFaraco} who provided a similar result for quasiregular maps and Benešová and Kružík \cite{bbmk2013} who characterized Young measures generated by gradients of bi-Lipschitz maps. Our results are motivated by non-linear elasticity where injectivity of the functions in the generating sequence is essential in order to assure non-interpenetration of matter.
