We develop new characteristic-independent combinatorial criteria for semiampleness of divisors on M0,n. As an application, we associate to a cyclic rational quadratic form satisfying a certain balancedness condition an infinite sequence of semiample line bundles. We also give several sufficient and effective conditions for a symmetric divisor on M0,n to be semiample or nef.
We prove an existence theorem for good moduli spaces, and use it to construct the second flip in the log minimal model program for the moduli space of stable curves. In fact, our methods give a uniform, self-contained construction of the first three steps of the log minimal model program for the moduli spaces of stable pointed curves.
We give a direct proof, valid in arbitrary characteristic, of nefness for two families of F-nef divisors on Mˉ0,n. The divisors we consider include all type A level one conformal block divisors as well as divisors previously not known to be nef.
We analyze GIT stability of nets of quadrics in P4 up to projective equivalence. Since a general net of quadrics defines a canonically embedded smooth curve of genus five, the resulting GIT quotient gives a birational model of the moduli space of genus 5 curves. We study the geometry of the associated contraction and prove that the constructed GIT quotient is the final step of the log minimal model program for the moduli space of genus 5 curves.
We prove that a generic canonically or bicanonically embedded smooth curve has semistable m-th Hilbert points for all m. We also prove that a generic bicanonically embedded smooth curve has stable m-th Hilbert points for all m \geq 3. In the canonical case, this is accomplished by proving finite Hilbert semistability of special singular curves with G_m-action, namely the canonically embedded balanced ribbon and the canonically embedded balanced double A_{2k+1}-curve. In the bicanonical case, we prove finite Hilbert stability of special hyperelliptic curves, namely Wiman curves. Finally, we give examples of canonically embedded smooth curves whose m-th Hilbert points are non-semistable for low values of m, but become semistable past a definite threshold. We give an informal survey, emphasizing examples and open problems, of two interconnected research programs in moduli of curves: the systematic classification of modular compactifications of Mg,n, and the study of Mori chamber decompositions of $\M_{g,n}$.
We study cyclic covering morphisms from Mˉ0,n to moduli spaces of unpointed stable curves of positive genus or compactified moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian varieties. Our main application is a construction of new semipositive vector bundles and nef divisors on Mˉ0,n, with a view toward the F-conjecture. In particular, we construct new extremal rays of the symmetric nef cone of Mˉ0,n. We also find an alternate description of all sl level 1 conformal blocks divisors on Mˉ0,n.
This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1109.4986, where we proved that a general smooth curve of odd genus, canonically or bicanonically embedded, has semistable finite Hilbert points. Here, we prove that a generic canonically embedded curve of even genus has semistable finite Hilbert points. More precisely, we prove that a generic canonically embedded trigonal curve of even genus has semistable finite Hilbert points. Furthermore, we show that the analogous result fails for bielliptic curves. Namely, the Hilbert points of bielliptic curves are asymptotically semistable but become non-semistable below a definite threshold value depending on genus.
We give a precise formulation of the modularity principle for the log canonical models of Mˉg. Assuming the modularity principle holds, we develop and compare two methods for determining the critical alpha-values at which a singularity or complete curve with G_m-action arises in the modular interpretations of log canonical models of Mˉg. The first method involves a new invariant of curve singularities with G_m-action, constructed via the characters of the induced G_m-action on spaces of pluricanonical forms. The second method involves intersection theory on the variety of stable limits of a singular curve. We compute the expected alpha-values for large classes of singular curves, including curves with ADE, toric, and monomial unibranch Gorenstein singularities, as well as for ribbons, and show that the two methods yield identical predictions. We use these results to give a conjectural outline of the log MMP for Mˉg.
We establish GIT semistability of the 2nd Hilbert point of every Gieseker-Petri general canonical curve by a simple geometric argument. As a consequence, we obtain an upper bound on slopes of general families of Gorenstein curves. We also explore the question of what replaces hyperelliptic curves in the GIT quotients of the Hilbert scheme of canonical curves.
We describe the final log canonical model of the moduli space of stable curves of genus four. We prove that the rational map from Mˉ4 to this model contracts the Petri and the boundary divisors and flips the hyperelliptic locus. As an application, we find an exact bound on slopes of moving divisors on Mˉ4.
We introduce moduli spaces of quasi-admissible hyperelliptic covers with at worst A and D singularities. The stability conditions for these moduli spaces depend on two parameters describing allowable singularities. By varying these parameters, we interpolate between the stacks of stable limits of A and D singularities and the quotients of the versal deformation spaces of A and D singularities by a natural Gm action.
Using Kollár's semipositivity results, we produce a number of nef and ample tautological divisors on Hassett's spaces of weighted stable pointed curves. As an application, we prove that Hassett's spaces are log canonical models of Deligne-Mumford spaces of stable pointed curves.
We introduce a new technique for proving positivity of certain divisor classes on Mˉ0,n and its weighted variants. Our methods give an unconditional description of the spaces of symmetric weighted pointed rational curves as log canonical models of Mˉ0,n.
