Spectroscopic Observations of V455 Andromedae Superoutburst in 2007: the Most Exotic Spectral Features in Dwarf Nova Outbursts

We present our spectroscopic observations of V455 Andromedae during the 2007 superoutburst. Our observations cover this superoutburst from around the optical peak of the outburst to the post-superoutburst stage. During the early superhump phase, the emission lines of Balmer series, He I, He II, Bowen blend, and C IV / N IV blend were detected. He II 4686 line exhibited a double-peaked emission profile, where Balmer emission lines were single-peaked, which is unexpected from its high inclination. In the ordinary superhump phase, Balmer series transitioned to double-peaked emission profiles, and high-ionization lines were significantly weakened. These transitions of the line profiles should be related to the structural transformation of the accretion disk, as expected between the early and ordinary superhump transition in the thermal-tidal instability model. The Doppler map of H$α$ during the early superhump phase exhibits a compact blob centered at the primary white dwarf. In analogy to SW Sex-type cataclysmic variables, this feature could emerge from the disk wind and/or the mass accretion column onto the magnetized white dwarf. The Doppler map of He II 4686 Å~ is dominated by the ring-like structure and imposed two flaring regions with the velocity of $\sim$300 km/s, which is too slow for a Keplerian accretion disk. The phase of the flaring regions was coincident with the inner spiral arm structure identified during the early superhump phase. Our disk wind model with the enhanced emission from the inner arm structure successfully reproduced the observed properties of He II 4686 Å. Therefore, V455 And is the first case in dwarf nova outbursts that the presence of the disk wind is inferred from an optical spectrum.

Index theorem on $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$ orbifolds

We investigate chiral zero modes and winding numbers at fixed points on $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$ orbifolds. It is shown that the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for the chiral zero modes leads to a formula $n_+-n_-=(-V_++V_-)/2N$, where $n_{\pm}$ are the numbers of the $\pm$ chiral zero modes and $V_{\pm}$ are the sums of the winding numbers at the fixed points on $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$. This formula is complementary to our zero-mode counting formula on the magnetized orbifolds with non-zero flux background $M \neq 0$, consistently with substituting $M = 0$ for the counting formula $n_+ - n_- = (2M - V_+ + V_-)/2N$.

Zero-mode counting formula and zeros in orbifold compactifications

We thoroughly analyze the number of independent zero modes and their zero points on the toroidal orbifold $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$ ($N = 2, 3, 4, 6$) with magnetic flux background, inspired by the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. We first show a complete list for the number $n_η$ of orbifold zero modes belonging to $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ eigenvalue $η$. Since it turns out that $n_η$ quite complicatedly depends on the flux quanta $M$, the Scherk-Schwarz twist phase $(α_1, α_2)$, and the $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ eigenvalue $η$, it seems hard that $n_η$ can be universally explained in a simple formula. We, however, succeed in finding a single zero-mode counting formula $n_η = (M-V_η)/N + 1$, where $V_η$ denotes the sum of winding numbers at the fixed points on the orbifold $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_N$. The formula is shown to hold for any pattern.

5d Dirac fermion on quantum graph

In this paper, we investigate a five-dimensional Dirac fermion on a quantum graph that consists of a single vertex and $N$ loops. We find that the model possesses a rich structure of boundary conditions for wavefunctions on the quantum graph and they can be classified into $(2N+1)$ distinct categories. It is then shown that there appear degenerate four-dimensional chiral massless fermions in the four-dimensional mass spectrum. We briefly discuss how our model could naturally solve the problems of the fermion generation, the fermion mass hierarchy and the origin of the $CP$-violating phase.

Active Dirac Neutrinos via $SU(2)_L$ Doublets in 5d

We propose a new mechanism to generate minuscule active neutrino masses in a five-dimensional~(5d) spacetime of an interval without introducing $SU(2)_L$ singlet neutrinos. Under asymmetric boundary conditions on the two end points, a bulk mass for a 5d fermion allows a Dirac particle with a tiny mass eigenvalue. Implementing this mechanism, which provides us a new tool for building neutrino mass models, to the standard model gauge structure is possible when all the gauge bosons and the Higgs boson are localized on one of the branes.

Comprehensive Analysis of Yukawa Hierarchies on $T^2/Z_N$ with Magnetic Fluxes

Based on the result of classification in our previous work, we exhaustively investigate Yukawa sector of $U(8)$ model on magnetized orbifolds $T^{2}/Z_{2}$, $T^{2}/Z_{3}$, $T^{2}/Z_{4}$ and $T^{2}/Z_{6}$ by evaluating ratios of the mass eigenvalues of the three states in all the possible configurations with one and two Higgs pairs where three generations are realized in fermions. Because of smearing effect via kinetic mixing, one can realize a hierarchy such as $10^{-2}$-$10^{-3}$, but it is very difficult to achieve the mass ratio between the up and top quarks ($m_{\text{up}}/m_{\text{top}} \sim 10^{-5}$) on the complicated magnetized orbifolds $T^{2}/Z_{N}\,(N=3,4,6)$.

Classification of three-generation models on magnetized orbifolds

We classify the combinations of parameters which lead three generations of quarks and leptons in the framework of magnetized twisted orbifolds on $T^2/Z_2$, $T^2/Z_3$, $T^2/Z_4$ and $T^2/Z_6$ with allowing nonzero discretized Wilson line phases and Scherk-Schwarz phases. We also analyze two actual examples with nonzero phases leading to one-pair Higgs and five-pair Higgses and discuss the difference from the results without nonzero phases studied previously.

$Z_N$ twisted orbifold models with magnetic flux

We propose new backgrounds of extra dimensions to lead to four-dimensional chiral models with three generations of matter fermions, that is $T^2/Z_N$ twisted orbifolds with magnetic fluxes. We consider gauge theory on six-dimensional space-time, which contains the $T^2/Z_N$ orbifold with magnetic flux, Scherk-Schwarz phases and Wilson line phases. We classify all the possible Scherk-Schwarz and Wilson line phases on $T^2/Z_N$ orbifolds with magnetic fluxes. The behavior of zero modes is studied. We derive the number of zero modes for each eigenvalue of the $Z_N$ twist, showing explicitly examples of wave functions. We also investigate Kaluza-Klein mode functions and mass spectra.

Cyclic Leibniz rule: a formulation of supersymmetry on lattice

For the purpose of constructing supersymmetric(SUSY) theories on lattice, we propose a new type relation on lattice -cyclic Leibniz rule(CLR)- which is slightly different from an ordinary Leibniz rule. Actually, we find that CLR can enlarge the number of SUSYs and construct more Nicolai mappings in a quantum-mechanical model. In this model, the exact mass degeneracy between fermion and boson is shown.

Non-renormalization theorem and cyclic Leibniz rule in lattice supersymmetry

We propose a lattice model of supersymmetric complex quantum mechanics which realizes the non-renormalization theorem on a lattice. In our lattice model, the Leibniz rule in the continuum, which cannot hold on a lattice due to a no-go theorem, is replaced by the cyclic Leibniz rule (CLR) for difference operators. It is shown that CLR allows two of four supercharges of the continuum theory to preserve while a naive lattice model can realize one supercharge at the most. A striking feature of our lattice model is that there are no quantum corrections to potential terms in any finite order of perturbation theory. This is one of characteristic properties of supersymmetric theories in the continuum. It turns out that CLR plays a crucial role in the proof of the non-renormalization theorem. This result suggests that CLR grasps an essence of supersymmetry on a lattice.

Operator analysis of physical states on magnetized $T^{2}/Z_{N}$ orbifolds

We discuss an effective way for analyzing the system on the magnetized twisted orbifolds in operator formalism, especially in the complicated cases $T^{2}/Z_{3}$, $T^{2}/Z_{4}$ and $T^{2}/Z_{6}$. We can obtain the exact and analytical results which can be applicable for any larger values of the quantized magnetic flux M, and show that the (non-diagonalized) kinetic terms are generated via our formalism and the number of the surviving physical states are calculable in a rigorous manner by simply following usual procedures in linear algebra in any case. Our approach is very powerful when we try to examine properties of the physical states on (complicated) magnetized orbifolds $T^{2}/Z_{3}$, $T^{2}/Z_{4}$, $T^{2}/Z_{6}$ (and would be in other cases on higher-dimensional torus) and could be an essential tool for actual realistic model construction based on these geometries.

Realization of lepton masses and mixing angles from point interactions in an extra dimension

We investigate a model on an extra dimension $S^1$ where plenty of effective boundary points described by point interactions (zero-thickness branes) are arranged. After suitably selecting the conditions on these points for each type of five-dimensional fields, we realize the tiny active neutrino masses, the charged lepton mass hierarchy, and lepton mixings with a CP-violating phase, simultaneously. Not only the quark's but also the lepton's configurations are generated in a unified way with acceptable accuracy, with neither the see-saw mechanism nor symmetries in Yukawa couplings, by suitably setting the model parameters, even though their flavor structures are dissimilar each other. One remarkable point is that a complex vacuum expectation value of the five-dimensional Higgs doublet in this model becomes the common origin of the CP violation in both quark and lepton sectors. The model can be consistent with the results of the precision electroweak measurements and Large Hadron Collider experiments.

Realization of the Lepton Flavor Structure from Point Interactions

We investigate a 5d gauge theory on $S^1$ with point interactions. The point interactions describe extra boundary conditions and provide three generations, the charged lepton mass hierarchy, the lepton flavor mixing and tiny degenerated neutrino masses after choosing suitable boundary conditions and parameters. The existence of the restriction in the flavor mixing, which appears from the configuration of the extra dimension, is one of the features of this model. Tiny Yukawa couplings for the neutrinos also appears without the see-saw mechanism nor symmetries in our model. The magnitude of CP violation in the leptons can be a prediction and is consistent with the current experimental data.

$CP$ phase from twisted Higgs vacuum expectation value in extra dimension

We propose a new mechanism for generating a CP phase via Higgs a vacuum expectation value originating from geometry of an extra dimension. A twisted boundary condition is the key to produce an extra-dimension coordinate-dependent vacuum expectation value, which contains a CP phase degree of freedom and can be a new source of a CP phase in higher-dimensional gauge theories. As an illustrative example, we apply our mechanism to a five-dimensional gauge theory with point interactions and show that our mechanism can dynamically produce a nontrivial CP-violating phase with electroweak symmetry breaking, even though the five-dimensional model does not include any CP-violating phases of Yukawa couplings in the five-dimensional Lagrangian because of a single generation of five-dimensional fermions. We apply our mechanism to a model with point interactions, which has no source of CP-violating phases in the couplings of the higher-dimensional action, and show that a nontrivial CP phase dynamically appears.

17P/Holmes: Contrast in activity between before and after the 2007 outburst

A Jupiter-family comet, 17P/Holmes, underwent outbursts in 1892 and 2007. In particular, the 2007 outburst is known as the greatest outburst over the past century. However, little is known about the activity before the outburst because it was unpredicted. In addition, the time evolution of the nuclear physical status has not been systematically studied. Here we study the activity of 17P/Holmes before and after the 2007 outburst through optical and mid-infrared observations. We found that the nucleus highly depleted its near-surface icy component before but became activated after the 2007 outburst. Assuming a conventional 1-um-sized grain model, we derived a surface fractional active area of 0.58% +- 0.14% before the outburst whereas it was enlarged by a factor of ~50 after the 2007 outburst. We also found that large (>=1 mm) particles could be dominant in the dust tail observed around aphelion. Based on the size of the particles, the dust production rate was >=170 kg/s at the heliocentric distance rh = 4.1 AU, suggesting that the nucleus still held active status around the aphelion passage. The nucleus color was similar to that of the dust particles and average for a Jupiter-family comet but different from most Kuiper Belt objects, implying that the color may be inherent to icy bodies in the solar system. On the basis of these results, we concluded that more than 76 m surface materials were blown off by the 2007 outburst.

A criterion for lattice supersymmetry: cyclic Leibniz rule

It is old folklore that the violation of Leibniz rule on a lattice is an obstruction for constructing a lattice supersymmetric model. While it is still true for full supersymmetry, we show that a slightly modified form of the Leibniz rule, which we call cyclic Leibniz rule (CLR), is actually a criterion for the existence of partial lattice supersymmetry. In one dimension, we find sets of lattice difference operator and field multiplication smeared over lattice which satisfy the CLR under some natural assumptions such as translational invariance and locality. Thereby we construct a model of supersymmetric lattice quantum mechanics without spoiling locality. The CLR relation is coincident with the condition that the vanishing of the so-called surface term in the construction by lattice Nicolai map. We can construct superfield formalism with arbitrary superpotential. This also enables us to apply safely a localization technique to our model, because the kinetic term and the interaction terms of our model are independently invariant under the supersymmetry transformation. A preliminary attempt in finding a solution for the higher dimensional case is also discussed.

CP phase from Higgs's boundary condition

We propose a new mechanism to generate a CP phase originating from a non-trivial Higgs vacuum expectation value in an extra dimension. A twisted boundary condition for the Higgs doublet can produce an extra dimensional coordinate-dependent vacuum expectation value containing a CP phase degree of freedom. With this mechanism, we construct a phenomenological model on S^{1} which can simultaneously and naturally explain the origins of the fermion generations, the quark mass hierarchy and the structure of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix with the CP phase.

Quark mass hierarchy and mixing via geometry of extra dimension with point interactions

We propose a new model which can naturally explain origins of fermion generations, quark mass hierarchy, and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix simultaneously from geometry of an extra dimension. We take the extra dimension to be an interval with point interactions, which are additional boundary points in the bulk space of the interval. Because of the Dirichlet boundary condition for fermion at the positions of point interactions, profiles of chiral fermion zero modes are split and localized, and then we can realize three generations from each five-dimensional Dirac fermion. Our model allows fermion flavor mixing but the form of non-diagonal elements of fermion mass matrices is found to be severely restricted due to geometry of the extra dimension. The Robin boundary condition for a scalar leads to an extra coordinate-dependent vacuum expectation value, which can naturally explain the fermion mass hierarchy.

Running Boundary Condition

In this paper we argue that boundary condition may run with energy scale. As an illustrative example, we consider one-dimensional quantum mechanics for a spinless particle that freely propagates in the bulk yet interacts only at the origin. In this setting we find the renormalization group flow of U(2) family of boundary conditions exactly. We show that the well-known scale-independent subfamily of boundary conditions are realized as fixed points. We also discuss the duality between two distinct boundary conditions from the renormalization group point of view. Generalizations to conformal mechanics and quantum graph are also discussed.

Shifted orbifold models with magnetic flux

We propose a mechanism to obtain the generation of matter in the standard model. We start from the analysis of the $T^2/Z_N$ shifted orbifold with magnetic flux, which imposes a $Z_N$ symmetry on torus. We also consider several orbifolds such as $(T^2\times T^2)/Z_N$, $(T^2 \times T^2 \times T^2)/(Z_N \times Z_{N'})$ and $(T^2 \times T^2 \times T^2)/(Z_N \times Z_{N'} \times Z_{N"})$. On such orbifolds, we study the behavior of fermions in two different means, one is the operator formalism and the other is to analyze wave functions explicitly. For an interesting result, it is found that the number of zero-mode fermions is related to $N$ of the $Z_N$ symmetry. In other words, the generation of matter relates to the type of orbifolds. Moreover, we find that shifted orbifold models to realize three generations are, in general, severely restricted. For example, the three-generation model on the type of $M^4 \times (T^2 \times T^2)/Z_N$ is unique. One can also construct other types of three-generation orbifold models with rich flavor structure. Those results may bring us a realistic model with desired Yukawa structure.

Hidden quantum-mechanical supersymmetry in extra dimensions

We study higher dimensional field theories with extra dimensions from a 4d spectrum point of view. It is shown that 4d mass spectra of spinor, gauge and gravity field theories are governed by quantum-mechanical supersymmetry. The 4d massless modes turn out to correspond to zero energy vacuum states of the supersymmetry. Allowed boundary conditions on extra dimensions compatible with the supersymmetry are found to be severely restricted.

Leibniz rule, locality and supersymmetry on lattice

In a finite volume system, we prove a no-go theorem on a Leibniz rule with a care of locality argument on latttice. The new possibility on the Leibniz rule solutions on lattice is discussed. Although the new solution admits a local difference operator, a non-local product rule is needed. In the case, a supersymmetric interacting theory is simply realized. The difference between finite flavor systems and matrix representations of infinite flavor systems is explained based on a finite volume system analysis including the no-go theorem.

Emergent Supersymmetry in Warped Backgrounds

We show that quantum mechanical supersymmetries are emerged in Kaluza-Klein spectrum of linearized gravity in several warped backgrounds as a consequence of higher-dimensional general coordinate invariance. These emergent supersymmetries play an essential role for the spectral structure of braneworld gravity. We show that for the case of braneworld models with two codimension-1 branes the spectral pattern is completely determined only through the supersymmetries.

Gauge-Higgs Unification in Lifshitz Type Gauge Theory

We discuss the gauge-Higgs unification in a framework of Lifshitz type gauge theory. We study a higher dimensional gauge theory on R^{D-1}\times S^{1} in which the normal second (first) order derivative terms for scalar (fermion) fields in the action are replaced by higher order derivative ones for the direction of the extra dimension. We provide some mathematical tools to evaluate a one-loop effective potential for the zero mode of the extra component of a higher dimensional gauge field and clarify how the higher order derivative terms affect the standard form of the effective potential. Our results show that they can make the Higgs mass heavier and change its vacuum expectation value drastically. Some extensions of our framework are briefly discussed.

Phase Structure of Gauge Theories on an Interval

We discuss gauge symmetry breaking in a general framework of gauge theories on an interval. We first derive a possible set of boundary conditions for a scalar field, which are compatible with several consistency requirements. It is shown that with these boundary conditions the scalar field can acquire a nontrivial vacuum expectation value even if the scalar mass square is positive. Any nonvanishing vacuum expectation value cannot be a constant but, in general, depends on the extra dimensional coordinate of the interval. The phase diagram of broken/unbroken gauge symmetry possesses a rich structure in the parameter space of the length of the interval, the scalar mass and the boundary conditions. We also discuss 4d chiral fermions and fermion mass hierarchies in our gauge symmetry breaking scenario.

Spectroscopic Observations of the WZ Sge-Type Dwarf Nova GW Librae during the 2007 Superoutburst

We carried out an international spectroscopic observation campaign of the dwarf nova GW Librae (GW Lib) during the 2007 superoutburst. Our observation period covered the rising phase of the superoutburst, maximum, slowly decaying phase (plateau), and long fading tail after the rapid decline from the plateau. The spectral features dramatically changed during the observations. In the rising phase, only absorption lines of H$α$, H$β$, and H$γ$ were present. Around the maximum, the spectrum showed singly-peaked emission lines of H$α$, He I 5876, He I 6678, He II 4686, and C III/N III as well as absorption lines of Balmer components and He I. These emission lines significantly weakened in the latter part of the plateau phase. In the fading tail, all the Balmer lines and He I 6678 were in emission, as observed in quiescence. We find that the center of the H$α$ emission component was mostly stable over the whole orbital phase, being consistent with the low inclination of the system. Comparing with the observational results of WZ Sge during the 2001 superoutburst, the same type of stars as GW Lib seen with a high inclination angle, we interpret that the change of the H$α$ profile before the fading tail phase is attributed to a photoionized region formed at the outer edge of the accretion disk, irradiated from the white dwarf and inner disk.

No-Go Theorem of Leibniz Rule and Supersymmetry on the Lattice

An obstacle to realize supersymmetry on a lattice is the breakdown of Leibniz rule. We give a proof of a no-go theorem that it is impossible to construct a lattice field theory in an infinite lattice volume with any nontrivial field products and difference operators that satisfy the following three properties: (i) translation invariance, (ii) locality and (iii) Leibniz rule. We then propose a way to escape from the no-go theorem by introducing infinite flavors, and present a lattice model of N=2 supersymmetric quantum mechanics equipped with the full exact supersymmetry.

Higgsless Gauge Symmetry Breaking with a Large Mass Hierarchy

We propose a mechanism of Higgsless gauge symmetry breaking with a large mass hierarchy. We consider a 5D gauge theory on an orbifold $S^1/Z_2$. The gauge symmetry is broken by orbifolding and also nontrivial boundary conditions at fixed points. All 4D modes which survive at low energies are found to be localized around fixed points. Supersymmetry plays an important role in our mechanism. The tree-level unitarity in our model is briefly discussed.

Phase Structures of SU(N) Gauge-Higgs Models on Multiply Connected Spaces

We study an SU(N) gauge-Higgs model with N_F massless fundamental fermions on M^3 \otimes S^1. The model has two kinds of order parameters for gauge symmetry breaking: the component gauge field for the S^1 direction (Hosotani mechanism) and the Higgs field (Higgs mechanism). We find that the model possesses three phases called Hosotani, Higgs and coexisting phases for N=odd, while for N=even, the model has only two phases, the Hosotani and coexisting phases. The phase structure depends on a parameter of the model and the size of the extra dimension. The critical radius and the order of the phase transition are determined. We also consider the case that the representation of matter fields under the gauge group is changed. We find some models, in which there is only one phase, independent of parameters of the models as well as the size of the extra dimension.

Supersymmetry in quantum mechanics with point interactions

We investigate supersymmetry in one-dimensional quantum mechanics with point interactions. We clarify a class of point interactions compatible with supersymmetry and present N=2 supersymmetric models on a circle with two point interactions as well as a superpotential. A hidden su(2) structure inherent in the system plays a crucial role to construct the N=2 supercharges. Spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry due to point interactions and an extension to higher N-extended supersymmetry are also discussed.

Spontaneous breaking of the C, P, and rotational symmetries by topological defects in two extra dimensions

We formulate models of complex scalar fields in the space-time that has a two-dimensional sphere as extra dimensions. The Dirac-Wu-Yang monopole is set in two-sphere S^2 as a background gauge field. The nontrivial topology of the monopole induces topological defects, i.e. vortices. When the radius of S^2 is larger than a critical radius, the scalar field develops a vacuum expectation value and creates vortices in S^2. Then the vortices break the rotational symmetry of S^2. We exactly evaluate the critical radius as r_q = \sqrt{|q|}/μ, where q is the monopole number and μis the imaginary mass of the scalar. We show that the vortices repel each other. We analyze the vacua of the models with one scalar field in each case of q=1/2, 1, 3/2 and find that: when q=1/2, a single vortex exists; when q=1, two vortices sit at diametrical points on S^2; when q=3/2, three vortices sit at the vertices of the largest triangle on S^2. The symmetry of the model G = U(1) x SU(2) x CP is broken to H_{1/2} = U(1)', H_{1} = U(1)'' x CP, H_{3/2} = D_{3h}, respectively. Here D_{3h} is the symmetry group of a regular triangle. We extend our analysis to the doublet scalar fields and show that the symmetry is broken from G_{doublet} = U(1) x SU(2) x SU(2)_f x P to H_{doublet} = SU(2)' x P. Finally we obtain the exact vacuum of the model with the multiplet (q_1, q_2,..., q_{2j+1}) = (j, j,..., j) and show that the symmetry is broken from G_{multiplet} = U(1) x SU(2) x SU(2j+1)_f x CP to H_{multiplet} = SU(2)' x CP'. Our results caution that a careful analysis of dynamics of the topological defects is required for construction of a reliable model that possesses such a defect structure.

Spontaneous breaking of the rotational symmetry induced by monopoles in extra dimensions

We propose a field theoretical model that exhibits spontaneous breaking of the rotational symmetry. The model has a two-dimensional sphere as extra dimensions of the space-time and consists of a complex scalar field and a background gauge field. The Dirac monopole, which is invariant under the rotations of the sphere, is taken as the background field. We show that when the radius of the sphere is larger than a certain critical radius, the vacuum expectation value of the scalar field develops vortices, which pin down the rotational symmetry to lower symmetries. We evaluate the critical radius and calculate configurations of the vortices by the lowest approximation. The original model has a $U(1) \times SU(2)$ symmetry and it is broken to U(1), U(1), D_3 for each case of the monopole number q = 1/2, 1, 3/2, respectively, where D_3 is the symmetry group of a regular triangle. Moreover, we show that the vortex configurations are stable against higher corrections of the perturbative approximation.

Novel Phase Structure of Twisted O(N) phi^4 model on M^D-1 \times S^1

We study the O(N) $ϕ^4$ model compactified on $M^{D-1}\otimes S^1$, which allows to impose twisted boundary conditions for the $S^1$-direction. The O(N) symmetry can be broken to $H$ explicitly by the boundary conditions and further broken to $I$ spontaneously by vacuum expectation values of the fields. The symmetries $H$ and $I$ are completely classified and the model turns out to have unexpectedly a rich phase structure. The unbroken symmetry $I$ is shown to depend on not only the boundary conditions but also the radius of $S^1$, and the symmetry breaking patterns are found to be unconventional. The spontaneous breakdown of the translational invariance is also discussed.

Topological Aspects of an Antisymmetric Background Field on Orbifolds

We study string theory on orbifolds in the presence of an antisymmetric constant background field in detail and discuss some of new aspects of the theory. It is pointed out that the term with the antisymmetric background field can be regarded as a topological term like a Chern-Simons term or a Wess-Zumino term. Detailed analysis in the operator formalism shows that orbifold models with topologically nontrivial twists exhibit various anomalous behavior: Zero mode variables obey nontrivial quantization conditions. Coordinate transformations which define orbifolds are modified at quantum level. Wave functions of twisted strings in general acquire nontrivial phases when they move around non-contractible loops on orbifolds. Zero mode eigenvalues are shifted from naively expected values, in favor of modular invariance.
