FOREVER22: galaxy formation in protocluster regions

We present results from a new cosmological hydrodynamics simulation campaign of protocluster (PC) regions, FOREVER22: FORmation and EVolution of galaxies in Extremely-overdense Regions motivated by SSA22. The simulations cover a wide range of cosmological scales using three different zoom set-ups in a parent volume of (714.2 cMpc)3(714.2~\rm cMpc)^{3}: PCR (Proto-Cluster Region; V=(28.6 cMpc)3V= (28.6~{\rm cMpc})^{3} , SPH particle mass, mSPH=4.1×106 M⊙m_{\rm{SPH}} = 4.1 \times 10^{6}~\rm M_{\odot} and final redshift, zend=2.0z_{\rm end}=2.0), BCG (Brightest proto-Cluster Galaxy; V∼(10 cMpc)3V \sim (10~{\rm cMpc})^{3} , mSPH=5.0×105 M⊙m_{\rm SPH} = 5.0\times10^{5}~\rm M_{\odot} and zend=4.0z_{\rm end}=4.0 ), and First ( V∼(3 cMpc)3V \sim (3~{\rm cMpc})^{3} , mSPH=7.9×103 M⊙m_{\rm SPH} = 7.9 \times 10^{3}~\rm M_{\odot} and zend=9.5z_{\rm end}=9.5) runs, that allow to focus on different aspects of galaxy formation. In the PCR runs, we follow 10 PCs, each harbouring 1 - 4 SMBHs with MBH≥109 M⊙M_{\rm BH} \ge 10^{9}~\rm M_{\odot}. One of the PC cores shows a spatially close arrangement of seven starburst galaxies with SFR≳100 M⊙ yr−1{\rm SFR} \gtrsim 100~\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1} each, that are dust-obscured and would appear as submillimeter galaxies with flux ≳1 \gtrsim 1~ mJy at 1.1 mm1.1~ \rm mm in observations. The BCG runs show that the total SFRs of haloes hosting BCGs are affected by AGN feedback, but exceed 1000 M⊙ yr−11000~\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1} at z≲6z \lesssim 6. The First runs resolve mini-haloes hosting population (Pop) III stars and we show that, in PC regions, the dominant stellar population changes from Pop III to Pop II at z≳20z \gtrsim 20, and the first galaxies with SFR≳18 M⊙ yr−1{\rm SFR} \gtrsim 18~\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1} form at z∼10z \sim 10. These can be prime targets for future observations with the James Webb Space Telescope. Our simulations successfully reproduce the global star formation activities in observed PCs and suggest that PCs can kickstart cosmic reionization.

TRINITY: a three-dimensional time-dependent radiative transfer code for in-vivo near-infrared imaging

We develop a new three-dimensional time-dependent radiative transfer code, TRINITY (Time-dependent Radiative transfer In Near-Infrared TomographY), for in-vivo diffuse optical tomography (DOT). The simulation code is based on the design of long radiation rays connecting boundaries of a computational domain, which allows us to calculate light propagation with little numerical diffusion. We parallelize the code with Message Passing Interface (MPI) using the domain decomposition technique and confirm the high parallelization efficiency, so that simulations with a spatial resolution of ∼1\sim 1 millimeter can be performed in practical time. As a first application, we study the light propagation for a pulse collimated within θ∼15∘θ\sim 15^\circ in a phantom, which is a uniform medium made of polyurethane mimicking biological tissue. We show that the pulse spreads in all forward directions over ∼\sim a few millimeters due to the multiple scattering process of photons. Our simulations successfully reproduce the time-resolved signals measured with eight detectors for the phantom. We also introduce the effects of reflection and refraction at the boundary of medium with a different refractive index and demonstrate the faster propagation of photons in an air hole that is an analogue for the respiratory tract.

CHORUS. III. Photometric and Spectroscopic Properties of Lyαα Blobs at z=4.9−7.0z=4.9-7.0

We report the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) discovery of two Lyαα blobs (LABs), dubbed z70-1 and z49-1 at z=6.965z=6.965 and z=4.888z=4.888 respectively, that are Lyαα emitters with a bright (log⁡LLyα/[erg s−1]>43.4\log L_{\rm Lyα}/{\rm [erg\ s^{-1}]}>43.4) and spatially-extended Lyαα emission, and present the photometric and spectroscopic properties of a total of seven LABs; the two new LABs and five previously-known LABs at z=5.7−6.6z=5.7-6.6. The z70-1 LAB shows the extended Lyαα emission with a scale length of 1.4±0.21.4\pm 0.2 kpc, about three times larger than the UV continuum emission, making z70-1 the most distant LAB identified to date. All of the 7 LABs, except z49-1, exhibit no AGN signatures such as X-ray emission, {\sc Nv}λλ1240 emission, or Lyαα line broadening, while z49-1 has a strong {\sc Civ}λλ1548 emission line indicating an AGN on the basis of the UV-line ratio diagnostics. We carefully model the point-spread functions of the HSC images, and conduct two-component exponential profile fitting to the extended Lyαα emission of the LABs. The Lyαα scale lengths of the core (star-forming region) and the halo components are rc=0.6−1.2r_{\rm c}=0.6-1.2 kpc and rh=2.0−13.8r_{\rm h}=2.0-13.8 kpc, respectively. The average rhr_{\rm h} of the LABs falls on the extrapolation of the rhr_{\rm h}-Lyαα luminosity relation of the Lyαα halos around VLT/MUSE star-forming galaxies at the similar redshifts, suggesting that typical LABs at z≳5z\gtrsim5 are not special objects, but star-forming galaxies at the bright end.

Formation of globular clusters induced by external ultraviolet radiation II: Three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations

We explore the possibility of the formation of globular clusters under ultraviolet (UV) background radiation. One-dimensional spherical symmetric radiation hydrodynamics (RHD) simulations by Hasegawa et al. have demonstrated that the collapse of low-mass (10^6-10^7 solar masses) gas clouds exposed to intense UV radiation can lead to the formation of compact star clusters like globular clusters (GCs) if gas clouds contract with supersonic infall velocities. However, three-dimensional effects, such as the anisotropy of background radiation and the inhomogeneity in gas clouds, have not been studied so far. In this paper, we perform three-dimensional RHD simulations in a semi-cosmological context, and reconsider the formation of compact star clusters in strong UV radiation fields. As a result, we find that although anisotropic radiation fields bring an elongated shadow of neutral gas, almost spherical compact star clusters can be procreated from a "supersonic infall" cloud, since photo-dissociating radiation suppresses the formation of hydrogen molecules in the shadowed regions and the regions are compressed by UV heated ambient gas. The properties of resultant star clusters match those of GCs. On the other hand, in weak UV radiation fields, dark matter-dominated star clusters with low stellar density form due to the self-shielding effect as well as the positive feedback by ionizing photons. Thus, we conclude that the "supersonic infall" under a strong UV background is a potential mechanism to form GCs.
