An optimal representation for the trace zero subgroup

We give an optimal-size representation for the elements of the trace zero subgroup of the Picard group of an elliptic or hyperelliptic curve of any genus, with respect to a field extension of any prime degree. The representation is via the coefficients of a rational function, and it is compatible with scalar multiplication of points. We provide efficient compression and decompression algorithms, and complement them with implementation results. We discuss in detail the practically relevant cases of small genus and extension degree, and compare with the other known compression methods.

Computing L-series of geometrically hyperelliptic curves of genus three

Let C/Q be a curve of genus three, given as a double cover of a plane conic. Such a curve is hyperelliptic over the algebraic closure of Q, but may not have a hyperelliptic model of the usual form over Q. We describe an algorithm that computes the local zeta functions of C at all odd primes of good reduction up to a prescribed bound N. The algorithm relies on an adaptation of the "accumulating remainder tree" to matrices with entries in a quadratic field. We report on an implementation, and compare its performance to previous algorithms for the ordinary hyperelliptic case.

Index Calculus in the Trace Zero Variety

We discuss how to apply Gaudry's index calculus algorithm for abelian varieties to solve the discrete logarithm problem in the trace zero variety of an elliptic curve. We treat in particular the practically relevant cases of field extensions of degree 3 or 5. Our theoretical analysis is compared to other algorithms present in the literature, and is complemented by results from a prototype implementation.

Tame Class Field Theory for Global Function Fields

We give a function field specific, algebraic proof of the main results of class field theory for abelian extensions of degree coprime to the characteristic. By adapting some methods known for number fields and combining them in a new way, we obtain a different and much simplified proof, which builds directly on a standard basic knowledge of the theory of function fields. Our methods are explicit and constructive and thus relevant for algorithmic applications. We use generalized forms of the Tate-Lichtenbaum and Ate pairings, which are well-known in cryptography, as an important tool.

Point compression for the trace zero subgroup over a small degree extension field

Using Semaev's summation polynomials, we derive a new equation for the $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points of the trace zero variety of an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Using this equation, we produce an optimal-size representation for such points. Our representation is compatible with scalar multiplication. We give a point compression algorithm to compute the representation and a decompression algorithm to recover the original point (up to some small ambiguity). The algorithms are efficient for trace zero varieties coming from small degree extension fields. We give explicit equations and discuss in detail the practically relevant cases of cubic and quintic field extensions.
