Carbosilicene and germasilicene: Two 2D materials with excellent structural, electronic and optical properties

Using first principle calculations, we study the structural, optical and electronic properties of two-dimensional silicene-like structures of CSi7 (carbosilicene) and GeSi7 (germasilicene) monolayers. We show that both CSi7 and GeSi7 monolayers have different buckling that promises a new way to control the buckling in silicene-like structures. Carbon impurity decreases the silicene buckling, whereas germanium impurity increases it. The CSi7 has semiconducting properties with 0.25 eV indirect band gap, but GeSi7 is a semimetal. Also, under uniaxial tensile strain, the semiconducting properties of CSi7 convert to metallic properties which shows that CSi7 can be used in straintronic devices such as strain sensor and strain switch. There is no important response for GeSi7 under strain. The GeSi7 has higher dielectric constant relative to CSi7, silicene and graphene and it can be used as a 2D-material in high performance capacitors. Calculation of cohesive and formation energies show that CSi7 is more stable than GeSi7. Furthermore, we investigate the optical properties of these new materials and we show that CSi7 and GeSi7 can significantly increase the light absorption of silicene. The obtained results can pave a new route for tuning the electronic and optical properties of silicene like structures for different applications in nanoelectronic devices.

Controllable spin filtering and half metallicity in $β_{12}$-borophene nanoribbons

The experimental observation of the Dirac fermion states in $β_{12}$-borophene sheets and the discovery of their novel topological properties properties have made them a promising candidate for spintronic applications. Here, by combining non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) and tight-binding (TB) approximation, we study the charge and spin transport properties through a $β_{12}$-borophene nanoribbon (BNR) with the different edge shapes. We show when a BNR exposed to a nonlocal exchange magnetic field, the spin filtering occurs for both spin-up and spin-down so that the spin direction of transmitted electrons could be controlled by adjusting the energy of incoming electrons with the help of an external backgate voltage. It is found that an armchair BNR (ABNR) in the simultaneous presence of a transverse electric field and a nonlocal exchange field indicates a half-metallic nature which is electrically controllable. Moreover, the influence of local exchange field fields is evaluated by exposing the edges of ABNR to ferromagnetic strips with parallel and antiparallel configurations. Our findings show that the edge manipulations in ABNRs lead to the emergence of a giant magnetoresistance and a perfect spin filter. Finally, we studied the effects of edge vacancies and Anderson disorder on the spin-dependent conductance of an ABNR and find that the perfect spin polarization is not destroyed in the presence of Anderson disorder and various single vacancies. Our results reveal the outstanding spin transport properties of ABNRs for future spintronic devices.

Controllable spin-polarization using external electric field and spin-inversion in a silicene quantum dot

It is shown that, for appropriate values of electron energy, the silicene dot can work as a controllable spin polarizer. The spin polarizer can polarize the spin of transmitted electrons from nearly pure down to nearly pure up by changing the strength of an external electric field. Also, for spin polarized incoming electrons, the silicene quantum dot can invert the spin of electrons and can works as a spin inverter or a spin NOT gate. In addition, we investigate the effects of exchange field, induced by ferromagnetic substrate, on electron conductance and show that the silicene quantum dot can act as a nearly perfect spin-filter in the presence of exchange field.

Prefect spin filtering and spin inverting using a MoS2 quantum dot

The spin-dependent conductance and spin-polarization of a MoS2 quantum dot are studied in presence (absent) of an external electric field perpendicular to the molybdenum plane. It is shown that in absence of the electric field, the deformation of a MoS2 ribbon structure causes spin-splitting in the dot and non-prefect spin filtering is seen. Therefore, the technique could be used for designing spin-dependent devices of MoS2. Also, we show that the device could behave as a prefect spin filter and spin inverter under applying an external electric.

Spin transport and polarization properties of manganese-doped dual-guanine molecule

We study the spin transport and polarization properties of manganese-doped dual-guanine molecules connected to graphene leads using non-equilibrium Green's function method. It is shown that a manganese doped dual-guanine molecule is a biological semiconductor and behaves as a prefect spin filter. We show that this semiconductor can behave as a spin switch when the Rashba spin-orbit interaction is considered. In addition, it is shown that, a large conductance is observed due to the Fano-Kondo-Rashba resonance effect.

Tunable spin transport using zigzag MoS2 nanoribbon

We consider a zigzag nanoribbon of MoS2 and study its spin-dependent conductance and spin-polarization in presence (absent) of an external electric field. The field is not only perpendicular to the molybdenum plane (called vertical field Ez) but also to the transport direction of electrons (called transverse field Et). It is shown that, while in the absent of the external electric field, two bands of seven bands are spin split in the valence band but no spin splitting is seen at point . Under applying the electric field we show, the ribbon behaves as a prefect spin up (down) filter if and only if the both components of the electrical field are present. Finally it is shown that, by changing the strength of , the ribbon acts as a spin inverter for fixed values of Ez .
