The weight distributions of linear sets in PG(1,q^5)

In this paper, we study the weight distributions of $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^5)$. Our main theorem proves that a linear set $S$ of rank $5$, which is not scattered has the following weight distribution for its points with weight larger than 1: (i) one point of weight $4$ or $5$, (ii) one point of weight $3$ and $0$, $q$, $q^2$ points of weight two, (iii) $s$ points of weight $2$ where $s\in [q-2\sqrt{q}+1,q+2\sqrt{q}+1]\cup\{2q,2q+1,2q+2,3q,3q+1,q^2+1\}$. In particular, there are no $2$-clubs in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^5)$.

A note on large Kakeya sets

A Kakeya set $\mathcal{K}$ in an affine plane of order $q$ is the point set covered by a set $\mathcal{L}$ of $q+1$ pairwise non-parallel lines. Large Kakeya sets were studied by Dover and Mellinger; in [6] they showed that Kakeya sets with size at least $q^2-3q+9$ contain a large knot (a point of $\mathcal{K}$ lying on many lines of $\mathcal{L}$). In this paper, we improve on this result by showing that Kakeya set of size at least $\approx q^2-q\sqrt{q}+\frac{3}{2}q$ contain a large knot. Furthermore, we obtain a sharp result for planes of square order containing a Baer subplane.

Cameron-Liebler sets of generators in finite classical polar spaces

Cameron-Liebler sets were originally defined as collections of lines (`line classes') in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$ sharing certain properties with line classes of symmetric tactical decompositions. While there are many equivalent characterisations, these objects are defined as sets of lines whose characteristic vector lies in the image of the transpose of the point-line incidence matrix of $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$, and so combinatorially they behave like a union of pairwise disjoint point-pencils. Recently, the concept of a Cameron-Liebler set has been generalised to several other settings. In this article we introduce Cameron-Liebler sets of generators in finite classical polar spaces. For each of the polar spaces we give a list of characterisations that mirrors those for Cameron-Liebler line sets, and also prove some classification results.

On the dual code of points and generators on the Hermitian variety $\mathcal{H}(2n+1,q^2)$

We study the dual linear code of points and generators on a non-singular Hermitian variety $\mathcal{H}(2n+1,q^2)$. We improve the earlier results for $n=2$, we solve the minimum distance problem for general $n$, we classify the $n$ smallest types of code words and we characterize the small weight code words as being a linear combination of these $n$ types.

The Cameron-Liebler problem for sets

Cameron-Liebler line classes and Cameron-Liebler k-classes in PG(2k+1,q) are currently receiving a lot of attention. Links with the Erdős-Ko-Rado results in finite projective spaces occurred. We introduce here in this article the similar problem on Cameron-Liebler classes of sets, and solve this problem completely, by making links to the classical Erdős-Ko-Rado result on sets. We also present a characterisation theorem for the Cameron-Liebler classes of sets.

The small Kakeya sets in $T^{*}_{2}(\mathcal{C})$, $\mathcal{C}$ a conic

A Kakeya set in the linear representation $T^{*}_{2}(\mathcal{C})$, $\mathcal{C}$ a non-singular conic, is the point set covered by a set of $q+1$ lines, one through each point of $\mathcal{C}$. In this article we classify the small Kakeya sets in $T^{*}_{2}(\mathcal{C})$. The smallest Kakeya sets have size $\left\lfloor\frac{3q^{2}+2q}{4}\right\rfloor$, and all Kakeya sets with weight less than $\left\lfloor\frac{3(q^{2}-1)}{4}\right\rfloor+q$ are classified: there are approximately $\sqrt{\frac{q}{2}}$ types.

A linear set view on KM-arcs

In this paper, we study KM-arcs of type t, i.e. point sets of size q + t in PG(2, q) such that every line contains 0, 2 or t of its points. We use field reduction to give a different point of view on the class of translation arcs. Starting from a particular F2-linear set, called an i-club, we reconstruct the projective triads, the translation hyperovals as well as the translation arcs constructed by Korchmaros-Mazzocca, Gacs-Weiner and Limbupasiriporn. We show the KM-arcs of type q/4 recently constructed by Vandendriessche are translation arcs and fit in this family. Finally, we construct a family of KM-arcs of type q/4. We show that this family, apart from new examples that are not translation KM-arcs, contains all translation KM-arcs of type q/4.

Necessary conditions for the existence of 3-designs over finite fields with nontrivial automorphism groups

A q-design with parameters t-(v,k,lambda_t)_q is a pair (V, B) of the v-dimensional vector space V over GF(q) and a collection B of k-dimensional subspaces of V, such that each t-dimensional subspace of V is contained in precisely lambda_t members of B. In this paper we give new general necessary conditions on the existence of designs over finite fields with parameters 3-(v, k , lambda_3)_q with a prescribed automorphism group. These necessary conditions are based on a tactical decomposition of such a design over a finite field and are given in the form of equations for the coefficients of tactical decomposition matrices. In particular, they represent necessary conditions on the existence of q-analogues of Steiner systems admitting a prescribed automorphism group.

Entanglement-assisted quantum low-density parity-check codes

This paper develops a general method for constructing entanglement-assisted quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, which is based on combinatorial design theory. Explicit constructions are given for entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECCs) with many desirable properties. These properties include the requirement of only one initial entanglement bit, high error correction performance, high rates, and low decoding complexity. The proposed method produces infinitely many new codes with a wide variety of parameters and entanglement requirements. Our framework encompasses various codes including the previously known entanglement-assisted quantum LDPC codes having the best error correction performance and many new codes with better block error rates in simulations over the depolarizing channel. We also determine important parameters of several well-known classes of quantum and classical LDPC codes for previously unsettled cases.
