New Physics and Neutrino Oscillation

Description of neutrino oscillation in the case of Non-Standard neutrino Interaction (NSI) is briefly presented. The NSI causes the entanglement between internal degrees of freedom of neutrinos (mass, spin, flavour) and other accompanying particles in the production and detection processes. In such case neutrinos are mostly in the mixed states. Role of the density matrix in description of neutrino oscillation process is shortly explained.

Evidence for right-handed neutrinos at a neutrino factory

We emphasize that a muon based neutrino factory could show the existence of light right-handed neutrinos, if a deficit in the number of detected events is observed at a near detector. This could be as large as ~10% if the size of the new interactions saturates the present limits from electroweak precision data, what is not excluded by the oscillation experiments performed up to now. A simple model realizing such a scenario can be obtained adding right-handed neutrinos to the minimal Standard Model, together with an extra scalar doublet and a triplet of hypercharge 1. In this case, however, the possible deficit is reduced by a factor of ~3, and the Yukawa couplings must be adequately chosen. This is also generically required if lepton flavour violation must be below present bounds.

Neutrino oscillations beyond the Standard Model

We address the possible impact of New Physics on neutrino oscillation experiments. This can modify the neutrino production, propagation and/or detection, making the full cross section non-factorizable in general. Thus, for example, the neutrino flux may not be properly described assuming an unitary MNS matrix and/or neutrinos may propagate differently depending of their Dirac or Majorana character. Interestingly enough, present limits on New Physics still allow for observable effects at future neutrino experiments.

In Quest of Neutrino Masses at ${\cal{O}}$(eV) Scale

Neutrino oscillation and tritium beta decay experiments taken simultaneously into account are able to access the so far imperceptible absolute neutrino masses at the electronvolt level. The neutrino mass spectrum derived in this way is independent of the nature of neutrinos (Dirac or Majorana). Furthermore, the lack of neutrinoless double beta decay gives additional constraints on the Majorana neutrino mass spectrum. A case of three neutrinos is examined. Influence of different solutions to the solar neutrino deficit problem on the results is discussed. Apart from the present situation, four qualitatively distinct experimental situations which are possible in the future are investigated: when the two decay experiments give only upper bounds on effective neutrino masses, when either one of them gives a positive result, and when both give positive results. The discussion is carried out by taking into account the present experimental errors of relevant neutrino parameters as well as their much more precise expected estimations (e.g. by $ν$ factories). It is shown in which cases the upgraded decay experiments simultaneously with neutrino oscillation data may be able to fix the absolute scale of the neutrino mass spectrum, answer the question of the neutrino nature and put some light on CP phases in the lepton sector.

Nonunitary neutrino mixing matrix and CP violating neutrino oscillations

In the standard approach to the neutrino oscillations a unitary relation among weak and mass eigenstates of light neutrinos is imposed. However, in many extensions of the SM left-handed, active neutrinos mix with additional heavy neutrino states. Consequences of this additional mixing, driven by experimental constraints, on the neutrino oscillations are considered.

Parameters' domain in three flavour neutrino oscillations

We consider analytically the domain of the three mixing angles $Θ_{ij}$ and the CP phase $δ$ for three flavour neutrino oscillations both in vacuum and matter. Similarly to the quark sector, it is necessary and sufficient to let all the mixing angles $Θ_{12},Θ_{13},Θ_{23}$ and $δ$ be in the range $<0,\fracπ{2}>$ and $0 \leq δ< 2 π$, respectively. To exploit the full range of $δ$ will be important in future when more precise fits are possible, even without CP violation measurements. With the above assumption on the angles we can restrict ourselves to the natural order of masses $m_1<m_2<m_3$. Considerations of the mass schemes with some negative $δm^2$'s, though for some reasons useful, are not necessary from the point of view of neutrino oscillation parametrization and cause double counting only. These conclusions are independent of matter effects.

GENIUS project, neutrino oscillations and Cosmology: neutrinos reveal their nature?

The neutrinoless double beta decay as well as any other laboratory experiment has not been able to answer the question of the neutrino's nature. Hints on the answer are available when neutrino oscillations and $(ββ)_{0 ν}$ are considered simultaneously. In this case phenomenologically interesting neutrino mass schemes can lead to non-vanishing and large values of $<m_ν>$. As a consequence, some schemes with Majorana neutrinos can be ruled out even now. If we assume that in addition neutrinos contribute to Hot Dark Matter then the window for Majorana neutrinos is even more restricted, e.g. GENIUS experiment will be sensitive to scenarios with three Majorana neutrinos.

Are Neutrinos Dirac or Majorana Particles?

In spite of the general belief that neutrinos are Majorana particles, their character should be revealed experimentally. We begin by discussing why it is so difficult in terrestrial experiments. If neutrinos are Majorana particles, the first signal should come from neutrinoless double $β$ decay. Still the search for such a decay of various nuclei is negative. We outline how the present knowledge of neutrino masses and mixing matrix elements combined with the bound from $(ββ)_{0ν}$ decay could help to determine their nature.

Confronting electroweak precision measurements with New Physics models

Precision experiments, such as those performed at LEP and SLC, offer us an excellent opportunity to constrain extended gauge model parameters. To this end, it is often assumed, that in order to obtain more reliable estimates, one should include the sizable one--loop Standard Model (SM) corrections, which modify the $Z^0$ couplings as well as other observables. This conviction is based on the belief that the higher order contributions from the ``extension sector'' will be numerically small. However, the structure of higher order corrections can be quite different when comparing the SM with its extension, thus one should avoid assumptions which do not care about such facts. This is the case for all models with $ρ_{\rm tree} \equiv M_W^2/(M_{Z}^2\cos^2{Θ_W}) \neq 1$. As an example, both the manifest left-right symmetric model and the $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y \otimes \tilde{U}(1)$ model, with an additional $Z'$ boson, are discussed and special attention to the top contribution to $Δρ$ is given. We conclude that the only sensible way to confront a model with the experimental data is to renormalize it self-consistently, if not, parameters which depend strongly on quantum effects should be left free in fits, though essential physics is lost in this way. We should note that arguments given here allow us to state that at the level of loop corrections (indirect effects) there is nothing like a ``model independent global analysis'' of the data.

Left-right symmetry and heavy particle quantum effects

We have renormalized a classical left-right model with a bidoublet, and left and right triplets in the Higgs sector. We focus on oblique corrections and show the interplay between the top quark, heavy neutrinos and Higgses contribution to the muon $Δr$ parameter. In the SM, custodial symmetry prevents large oblique corrections to appear. Although in LR models there is no such symmetry to make vanish the quadratically diverging terms, we have shown, that heavy Higgses contributions to $Δr$ are under control. Also the top contribution to $Δr$, quite different from that in the SM, is discussed. However, heavy neutrinos seem to give the most important contributions. From oblique corrections, they can be as large as the SM top one. Moreover, vertex and box diagrams give additional non-decoupling effects and only concrete numerical estimates are able to answer whether the model is still self-consistent.

Quantization and renormalization of the manifest left-right symmetric model of electroweak interactions

Quantization and renormalization of the left-right symmetric model is the main purpose of the paper. First the model at tree level with a Higgs sector containing one bidoublet and two triplets is precisely discussed. Then the canonical quantization and Faddeev-Popov Lagrangian are carried out ('t Hooft gauge). The BRST symmetry is discussed. Subsequently the on mass shell renormalization is performed and, as a test of consistency, the renormalization of the ZNiNj vertex is analyzed.

The Minimal Extension of the SM and the Neutrino Oscillation Data

We study the simplest Standard Model estension with only one extra right-handed neutrino. In this case there are two massless $m_{1,2}$ and two massive $m_{3,4}$ neutrinos, and in principle both solar and atmospheric anomalies can be described in two different scenarios, $m_3 << m_4$ (scheme I) and $m_3 \simeq m_4$ (scheme II). However, neither bi-maximal mixing nor the dark matter problem are explained in this minimal extension. Only scheme II can accommodate simultaneously maximal mixing for atmospheric neutrinos and the small mixing angle MSW solution for the solar anomaly. This scenario can be tested in the BOREXINO experiment.

Heavy neutrino mixing and single production at Linear Collider

We study the single production of heavy neutrinos via the processes $e^-e^+ \to νN$ and $e^-γ\to W^- N$ at future linear colliders. As a base of our considerations we take a wide class of models, both with vanishing and non-vanishing left-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrix $m_L$. We perform a model independent analyses of the existing experimental data and find connections between the characteristic of heavy neutrinos (masses, mixings, CP eigenvalues) and the $m_L$ parameters. We show that with the present experimental constraints heavy neutrino masses almost up to the collision energy can be tested in the future experiments.

On the Possibilities of Distinguishing Dirac from Majorana Neutrinos

The problem if existing neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles is considered in a very pedagogical way. After a few historical remarks we recall the theoretical description of neutral spin 1/2 particles, emphasizing the difference between chirality and helicity which is important in our discussion. Next we describe the properties of neutrinos in the cases when their interactions are given by the standard model and by its extensions (massive neutrinos, right-handed currents, electromagnetic neutrino interaction, interaction with scalar particles). Various processes where the different nature of neutrinos could in principle be visible are reviewed. We clear up misunderstandings which have appeared in last suggestions how to distinguish both types of neutrinos.

INVERSE NEUTRINOLESS DOUBLE-BETA DECAY IN GAUGE THEORIES WITH CP VIOLATION

We investigate the reactions $e^-e^- \rightarrow W_i^-W_j^-$ for various gauge bosons production processes in the frame of the standard model with additional right-handed neutrinos and the Left-Right symmetric model. The present bounds on the various model parameters are taken into account. The question of the cross section behaviour for large energy and the CP violation problems are discussed.

CP Violation in the Heavy Neutrinos Production Process $e^+e^-\rightarrow N_1N_2$

The problem of CP conservation and CP violation for two heavy neutrinos production in $e^+e^-$ interaction is considered. Very convenient way of parametrization of the neutrino mass matrix, from which necessary and sufficient condition for CP conservation easily follows, is presented. Contrary to the Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism, the effects of CP violation in the lepton sector with Majorana neutrinos can be very large. Change of the total cross section caused by CP violation can be much larger then the cross section itself.

Higgs Boson Contributions to Neutrino Production in e-e+ Collisions in a Left-Right Symmetric Model

In gauge models with bigger number of Higgs particles their couplings to fermions are more complicated then in the standard model (SM). The influence of the Higgs bosons exchange on the neutrino production cross section in $e^-e^+$ collision ($e^-e^+ \rightarrow νN$) is investigated. The study has been done in the framework of the left-right symmetric model with the rich Higgs sector containing bidoublet and two triplets. The couplings of the Higgs particles even to light leptons can be as large as the gauge bosons couplings. The total effect of the Higgs bosons is small as a result of the big Higgs mass in the propagators.
