GECAM detection of a bright type-I X-ray burst from 4U 0614+09: confirmation its spin frequency at 413 Hz

One month after launching Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM), a bright thermonuclear X-ray burst from 4U~0614+09, was observed on January 24, 2021. We report the time-resolved spectroscopy of the burst and a burst oscillation detection at 413 Hz with a fractional amplitude 3.4\% (rms). This coincides with the burst oscillation previously discovered with \textit{Swift}/BAT \citep{Strohmayer2008}, and therefore confirms the spin frequency of this source. This burst is the brightest one in the normal bursts (except the superburst) ever detected from 4U~0614+09, which leads to an upper limit of distance estimation as 3.1 kpc. The folded light curve during the burst oscillation shows a multi-peak structure, which is the first case observed during a single burst oscillation in nonpulsating sources. The multi-peak profile could be due to additional harmonics of the burst oscillation, which is corresponding to several brighter/fainter spots at the stellar surface.

Low Temperature Thermoelectric Properties of Co- and Cr- doped CuAgSe

High mobility phonon-glass semimetal $CuAgSe$ has shown promise in recent years as a potential low-temperature thermoelectric material. It exhibits reasonably strong thermoelectric performance as well as an extremely high carrier mobility, both of which are enhanced when the material is doped with Ni at the Cu sites. The exact mechanism by which these enhancements result; however, is unclear. In order to further investigate the effects of chemical substitution on the material's thermoelectric properties, we have prepared and performed various measurements on $CuAgSe$ samples doped with Co and Cr according to the following compositional formulas: $Cu_{1-x}Co_{x}AgSe$ $(x=0.02, 0.05, 0.10)$ and $Cu_{1-x}Cr_{x}AgSe$ $(x=0.02, 0.05)$. Measurements of temperature and magnetic field dependent thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity, and Seebeck coefficient will be discussed. Our results reveal a remarkable sensitivity of $CuAgSe$'s thermoelectric properties to chemical doping in general as well as a particular sensitivity to specific dopants. This demonstrated tunability of $CuAgSe$'s various properties furthers the case that high mobility phonon glass-semimetals are strong candidates for potential low temperature thermoelectric applications.

Deep inner-shell multiphoton ionization by intense x-ray free-electron laser pulses

We have investigated multiphoton multiple ionization dynamics of argon and xenon atoms using a new x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) facility, SPring-8 Angstrom Compact free electron LAser (SACLA) in Japan, and identified that highly charged Xe ions with the charge state up to +26 are produced predominantly via four-photon absorption as well as highly charged Ar ions with the charge state up to +10 are produced via two-photon absorption at a photon energy of 5.5 keV. The absolute fluence of the XFEL pulse, needed for comparison between theory and experiment, has been determined using two-photon processes in the argon atom with the help of benchmark ab initio calculations. Our experimental results, in combination with a newly developed theoretical model for heavy atoms, demonstrate the occurrence of multiphoton absorption involving deep inner shells.

Photoelectron Angular Distributions for Two-photon Ionization of Helium by Ultrashort Extreme Ultraviolet Free Electron Laser Pulses

Phase-shift differences and amplitude ratios of the outgoing $s$ and $d$ continuum wave packets generated by two-photon ionization of helium atoms are determined from the photoelectron angular distributions obtained using velocity map imaging. Helium atoms are ionized with ultrashort extreme-ultraviolet free-electron laser pulses with a photon energy of 20.3, 21.3, 23.0, and 24.3 eV, produced by the SPring-8 Compact SASE Source test accelerator. The measured values of the phase-shift differences are distinct from scattering phase-shift differences when the photon energy is tuned to an excited level or Rydberg manifold. The difference stems from the competition between resonant and non-resonant paths in two-photon ionization by ultrashort pulses. Since the competition can be controlled in principle by the pulse shape, the present results illustrate a new way to tailor the continuum wave packet.
