Instantons and no wormholes in $AdS_3\times S^3 \times CY_2$

We study supergravity instantons sourced by axion (and saxion) fields in the Euclidean $AdS_3\times S^3 \times CY_2$ vacua of IIB supergravity. Such instantons are described by geodesic curves on the moduli space; the timelike geodesics can describe Euclidean wormholes, the lightlike geodesics describe (generalisations of) D-instantons and spacelike geodesics are sub-extremal versions thereof. We perform a concrete classification of such geodesics and find that, despite earlier claims, the wormholes fail to be regular. A subclass of the lightlike geodesics is supersymmetric and, up to dualities, lift to Euclidean strings wrapping 2-cycles in the CY$_2$. The dual of these instantons are expected to be worldsheet instantons of the D1-D5 CFT.

M5-brane in the superspace approach

Motivated by Sen's spacetime prescription for the construction of theories with self-dual field strengths, we present a rigid superspace Lagrangian describing noninteracting tensor multiplets living on a stack of M5-branes and containing all the physical constraints on the fields, yielding the on-shell matching of the degrees of freedom. The geometric superspace approach adopted here offers a natural realization of superdiffeomorphisms and is particularly well suited for the coupling to supergravity. However, within this formulation the (anti-)self-duality property of the 3-form field strengths is lost when the superspace Lagrangian is trivially restricted to spacetime. We propose two main paths to address this issue: a first-order superspace extension of Sen's spacetime results, which, once trivially restricted to spacetime, yields all the dynamical equations including the (anti-)self-duality constraint on the 3-form field strengths, and a possible way to obtain a full superspace description of the theory, based on integral forms.

$\mathcal N=2$ AdS$_4$ supergravity, holography and Ward identities

We develop in detail the holographic framework for an $\mathcal{N}=2$ pure AdS supergravity model in four dimensions, including all the contributions from the fermionic fields and adopting the Fefferman-Graham parametrization. We work in the first order formalism, where the full superconformal structure can be kept manifest in principle, even if only a part of it is realized as a symmetry on the boundary, while the remainder has a non-linear realization. Our study generalizes the results presented in antecedent literature and includes a general discussion of the gauge-fixing conditions on the bulk fields which yield the asymptotic symmetries at the boundary. We construct the corresponding superconformal currents and show that they satisfy the related Ward identities when the bulk equations of motion are imposed. Consistency of the holographic setup requires the super-AdS curvatures to vanish at the boundary. This determines, in particular, the expression of the super-Schouten tensor of the boundary theory, which generalizes the purely bosonic Schouten tensor of standard gravity by including gravitini bilinears. The same applies to the superpartner of the super-Schouten tensor, the conformino. Furthermore, the vanishing of the supertorsion poses general constraints on the sources of the three-dimensional boundary conformal field theory and requires that the super-Schouten tensor is endowed with an antisymmetric part proportional to a gravitino-squared term.

Twisting D(2,1; α) Superspace

We develop a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ theory of rigid supersymmetry describing the dynamics of a set of hypermultiplets $(Λ^{αα'\dotα'}_I,\,ϕ^{αA}_I)$ on a curved AdS$_3$ worldvolume background, whose supersymmetry is captured by the supergroup ${\rm D}^2(2,1;\, \boldsymbolα)$. To unveil some remarkable features of this model, we perform two twists, involving the SL$(2,\mathbb R)$ factors of the theory. After the first twist, our spacetime Lagrangian exhibits a Chern-Simons term associated with an odd one-form field, together with a fermionic "gauge-fixing'', in the spirit of the Rozansky-Witten model. The second twist allows to interpret the ${\rm D}^2(2,1;\, \boldsymbolα)$ setup as a framework capable of describing massive Dirac particles. In particular, this yields a generalisation of the Alvarez-Valenzuela-Zanelli model of ''unconventional supersymmetry''. We comment on specific values of the combination $α+1$, which in our model is related to a sort of gauging in the absence of dynamical gauge fields.

$\mathcal{N}$-Extended $D=4$ Supergravity, Unconventional SUSY and Graphene

We derive a $2+1$ dimensional model with unconventional supersymmetry at the boundary of an ${\rm AdS}_4$ $\mathcal{N}$-extended supergravity, generalizing previous results. The (unconventional) extended supersymmetry of the boundary model is instrumental in describing, within a top-down approach, the electronic properties of graphene-like 2D materials at the two Dirac points, ${\bf K}$ and ${\bf K}'$. The two valleys correspond to the two independent sectors of the ${\rm OSp}(p|2)\times {\rm OSp}(q|2)$ boundary model in the $p=q$ case, which are related by a parity transformation. The Semenoff and Haldane-type masses entering the corresponding Dirac equations are identified with the torsion parameters of the substrate in the model.

The holographic dual to supergravity instantons in $\rm AdS_5\times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_k$

We investigate the holographic dual to supergravity instanton solutions in $\rm AdS_5\times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_k$, which are described entirely in terms of geodesics on the AdS moduli space. These instantons are expected to be holographically dual to instantons in an $\mathcal{N}=2$ necklace quiver gauge theory in four dimensions with $k$ gauge nodes, at large N. For the supersymmetric instantons we find a precise match between the on-shell actions and the vevs of $\text{Tr}[F^2]$ and $\text{Tr}[F\wedge F]$ computed on both sides of the duality. This correspondence requires an exact identification between the massless supergravity scalars and the dual gauge couplings which we give in detail. We also find a candidate for the supergravity dual of a quasi-instanton in the quiver theory, which is a non-supersymmetric extremal solution.

Unconventional Supersymmetry at the Boundary of AdS_4 Supergravity

In this paper we perform, in the spirit of the holographic correspondence, a particular asymptotic limit of N=2, AdS_4 supergravity to N=2 supergravity on a locally AdS_3 boundary. Our boundary theory enjoys OSp(2|2) x SO(1,2) invariance and is shown to contain the D=3 super-Chern Simons OSp(2|2) theory considered in [Alvarez:2011gd] and featuring "unconventional local supersymmetry". The model constructed in that reference describes the dynamics of a spin-1/2 Dirac field in the absence of spin 3/2 gravitini and was shown to be relevant for the description of graphene, near the Dirac points, for specific spatial geometries. Our construction yields the model in [Alvarez:2011gd] with a specific prescription on the parameters. In this framework the Dirac spin-1/2 fermion originates from the radial components of the gravitini in D=4.

Generating Geodesic Flows and Supergravity Solutions

We consider the geodesic motion on the symmetric moduli spaces that arise after timelike and spacelike reductions of supergravity theories. The geodesics correspond to timelike respectively spacelike $p$-brane solutions when they are lifted over a $p$-dimensional flat space. In particular, we consider the problem of constructing \emph{the minimal generating solution}: A geodesic with the minimal number of free parameters such that all other geodesics are generated through isometries. We give an intrinsic characterization of this solution in a wide class of orbits for various supergravities in different dimensions. We apply our method to three cases: (i) Einstein vacuum solutions, (ii) extreme and non-extreme D=4 black holes in N=8 supergravity and their relation to N=2 STU black holes and (iii) Euclidean wormholes in $D\geq 3$. In case (iii) we present an easy and general criterium for the existence of regular wormholes for a given scalar coset.

On Multifield Born and Born-Infeld Theories and their non-Abelian Generalizations

Starting from a recently proposed linear formulation in terms of auxiliary fields, we study $n$-field generalizations of Born and Born-Infeld theories. In this description the Lagrangian is quadratic in the vector field strengths and the symmetry properties (including the characteristic self-duality) of the corresponding non-linear theory are manifest as on-shell duality symmetries and depend on the choice of the (homogeneous) manifold spanned by the auxiliary scalar fields and the symplectic frame. By suitably choosing these defining properties of the quadratic Lagrangian, we are able to reproduce some known multi-field Born-Infeld theories and to derive new non-linear models, such as the $n$-field Born theory. We also discuss non-Abelian generalizations of these theories obtained by choosing the vector fields in the adjoint representation of an off-shell compact global symmetry group $K$ and replacing them by non-Abelian, $K$-covariant field strengths, thus promoting $K$ to a gauge group.

Black hole solutions to the $F_4$-model and their orbits (I)

In this paper we continue the program of the classification of nilpotent orbits using the approach developed in arXiv:1107.5986, within the study of black hole solutions in D=4 supergravities. Our goal in this work is to classify static, single center black hole solutions to a specific N=2 four dimensional "magic" model, with special Kähler scalar manifold ${\rm Sp}(6,\mathbb{R})/{\rm U}(3)$, as orbits of geodesics on the pseudo-quaternionic manifold ${\rm F}_{4(4)}/[{\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})\times {\rm Sp}(6,\mathbb{R})]$ with respect to the action of the isometry group ${\rm F}_{4(4)}$. Our analysis amounts to the classification of the orbits of the geodesic "velocity" vector with respect to the isotropy group $H^*={\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})\times {\rm Sp}(6,\mathbb{R})$, which include a thorough classification of the \emph{nilpotent orbits} associated with extremal solutions and reveals a richer structure than the one predicted by the $β-γ$ labels alone, based on the Kostant Sekiguchi approach. We provide a general proof of the conjecture made in arXiv:0908.1742 which states that regular single center solutions belong to orbits with coinciding $β-γ$ labels. We also prove that the reverse is not true by finding distinct orbits with the same $β-γ$ labels, which are distinguished by suitably devised tensor classifiers. Only one of these is generated by regular solutions. Since regular static solutions only occur with nilpotent degree not exceeding 3, we only discuss representatives of these orbits in terms of black hole solutions. We prove that these representatives can be found in the form of a purely dilatonic four-charge solution (the generating solution in D=3) and this allows us to identify the orbit corresponding to the regular four-dimensional metrics.

The $c$-map, Tits Satake subalgebras and the search for $\mathcal{N}=2$ inflaton potentials

In this paper we address the general problem of including inflationary models exhibiting Starobinsky-like potentials into (symmetric) $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravities. This is done by gauging suitable abelian isometries of the hypermultiplet sector and then truncating the resulting theory to a single scalar field. By using the characteristic properties of the global symmetry groups of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravities we are able to make a general statement on the possible $α$-attractor models which can obtained upon truncation. We find that in symmetric $\mathcal{N}=2$ models group theoretical constraints restrict the allowed values of the parameter $α$ to be $α=1,\,\frac{2}{3},\, \frac{1}{3}$. This confirms and generalizes results recently obtained in the literature. Our analysis heavily relies on the mathematical structure of symmetric $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravities, in particular on the so called $c$-map connection between Quaternionic Kähler manifolds starting from Special Kähler ones. A general statement on the possible consistent truncations of the gauged models, leading to Starobinsky-like potentials, requires the essential help of Tits Satake universality classes. The paper is mathematically self-contained and aims at presenting the involved mathematical structures to a public not only of physicists but also of mathematicians. To this end the main mathematical structures and the general gauging procedure of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravities is reviewed in some detail.

A Note on the Field-Theoretical Description of Superfluids

Recently, a Lagrangian description of superfluids attracted some interest from the fluid/gravity-correspondence viewpoint. In this respect, the work of Dubovksy et al. has proposed a new field theoretical description of fluids, which has several interesting aspects. On another side, we have provided in arXiv:1304.2206 a supersymmetric extension of the original works. In the analysis of the Lagrangian structures a new invariant appeared which, although related to known invariants, provides, in our opinion, a better parametrisation of the fluid dynamics in order to describe the fluid/superfluid phases.

Entropy Current Formalism for Supersymmetric Theories

The recent developments in fluid/gravity correspondence give a new impulse to the study of fluid dynamics of supersymmetric theories. In that respect, the entropy current formalism requires some modifications in order to be adapted to supersymmetric theories and supergravities. We formulate a new entropy current in superspace with the properties: 1) it is conserved off-shell for non dissipative fluids, 2) it is invariant under rigid supersymmetry transformations 3) it is covariantly closed in local supersymmetric theories 4) it reduces to its bosonic expression on space-time.

Integrable Scalar Cosmologies II. Can they fit into Gauged Extended Supergavity or be encoded in N=1 superpotentials?

The question whether the integrable one-field cosmologies classified in a previous paper by Fre, Sagnotti and Sorin can be embedded as consistent one-field truncations into Extended Gauged Supergravity or in N=1 supergravity gauged by a superpotential without the use of D-terms is addressed in this paper. The answer is that such an embedding is very difficult and rare but not impossible. Indeed we were able to find two examples of integrable models embedded in Supergravity in this way. Both examples are fitted into N=1 Supergravity by means of a very specific and interesting choice of the superpotential W(z). The question whether there are examples of such an embedding in extended Gauged Supergravity remains open. In the present paper, relying on the embedding tensor formalism we classified all gaugings of the N=2 STU model, confirming, in the absence on hypermultiplets, the uniqueness of the stable de Sitter vacuum found several years ago by Fre, Trigiante and Van Proeyen and excluding the embedding of any integrable cosmological model. A detailed analysis of the space of exact solutions of the first Supergravity embedded integrable cosmological model revealed several new features worth an in depth consideration. When the scalar potential has an extremum at a negative value, the universe necessarily collapses into a Big Crunch notwithstanding its spatial flatness. The causal structure of these universes is quite different from that of the closed, positive curved, universe: indeed in this case the particle and event horizons do not coincide and develop complicated patterns. The cosmological consequences of this unexpected mechanism deserve careful consideration.

Evidence for a family of SO(8) gauged supergravity theories

In this note we discuss the classification of duality orbits of N = 8 gauged supergravity models. Using tensor classifiers, we show that there is a one-parameter family of inequivalent SO(8) gauged supergravity theories. We briefly discuss the couplings of such models and show that, although the maximally symmetric vacuum has the same quadratic spectrum, the supersymmetry transformations, the couplings and the scalar potential are parameter dependent. We also comment on the possible M-theory uplift and on the meaning of the parameter for the dual gauge theories.

Two-Centered Magical Charge Orbits

We determine the two-centered generic charge orbits of magical N = 2 and maximal N = 8 supergravity theories in four dimensions. These orbits are classified by seven U-duality invariant polynomials, which group together into four invariants under the horizontal symmetry group SL(2,R). These latter are expected to disentangle different physical properties of the two-centered black-hole system. The invariant with the lowest degree in charges is the symplectic product (Q1,Q2), known to control the mutual non-locality of the two centers.

Black holes in supergravity and integrability

Stationary black holes of massless supergravity theories are described by certain geodesic curves on the target space that is obtained after dimensional reduction over time. When the target space is a symmetric coset space we make use of the group-theoretical structure to prove that the second order geodesic equations are integrable in the sense of Liouville, by explicitly constructing the correct amount of Hamiltonians in involution. This implies that the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism can be applied, which proves that all such black hole solutions, including non-extremal solutions, possess a description in terms of a (fake) superpotential. Furthermore, we improve the existing integration method by the construction of a Lax integration algorithm that integrates the second order equations in one step instead of the usual two step procedure. We illustrate this technology with a specific example.

Fake Superpotential for Large and Small Extremal Black Holes

We consider the fist order, gradient-flow, description of the scalar fields coupled to spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat black holes in extended supergravities. Using the identification of the fake superpotential with Hamilton's characteristic function we clarify some of its general properties, showing in particular (besides reviewing the issue of its duality invariance) that W has the properties of a Liapunov's function, which implies that its extrema (associated with the horizon of extremal black holes) are asymptotically stable equilibrium points of the corresponding first order dynamical system (in the sense of Liapunov). Moreover, we show that the fake superpotential W has, along the entire radial flow, the same flat directions which exist at the attractor point. This allows to study properties of the ADM mass also for small black holes where in fact W has no critical points at finite distance in moduli space. In particular the W function for small non-BPS black holes can always be computed analytically, unlike for the large black-hole case.

First Order Description of D=4 static Black Holes and the Hamilton-Jacobi equation

In this note we discuss the application of the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism to the first order description of four dimensional spherically symmetric and static black holes. In particular we show that the prepotential characterizing the flow coincides with the Hamilton principal function associated with the one-dimensional effective Lagrangian. This implies that the prepotential can always be defined, at least locally in the radial variable and in the moduli space, both in the extremal and non-extremal case and allows us to conclude that it is duality invariant. We also give, in this framework, a general definition of the ``Weinhold metric'' in terms of which a necessary condition for the existence of multiple attractors is given. The Hamilton-Jacobi formalism can be applied both to the restricted phase space where the electromagnetic potentials have been integrated out as well as in the case where the electromagnetic potentials are dualized to scalar fields using the so-called three-dimensional Euclidean approach. We give some examples of application of the formalism, both for the BPS and the non-BPS black holes.

The full integration of black hole solutions to symmetric supergravity theories

We prove that all stationary and spherical symmetric black hole solutions to theories with symmetric target spaces are integrable and we provide an explicit integration method. This exact integration is based on the description of black hole solutions as geodesic curves on the moduli space of the theory when reduced over the time-like direction. These geodesic equations of motion can be rewritten as a specific Lax pair equation for which mathematicians have provided the integration algorithms when the initial conditions are described by a diagonalizable Lax matrix. On the other hand, solutions described by nilpotent Lax matrices, which originate from extremal regular (small) D = 4 black holes can be obtained as suitable limits of solutions obtained in the diagonalizable case, as we show on the generating geodesic (i.e. most general geodesic modulo global symmetries of the D = 3 model) corresponding to regular (and small) D = 4 black holes. As a byproduct of our analysis we give the explicit form of the Wick rotation connecting the orbits of BPS and non-BPS solutions in maximally supersymmetric supergravity and its STU truncation.

Exceptional N=6 and N=2 AdS_4 Supergravity, and Zero-Center Modules

We study the gauging of the orthosymplectic algebras OSp(6|4)xSO(2) and its "dual" OSp(2|4)x SO(6), both based on supergravities with the same exceptional coset SO*(12)/U(6), and gauge group SO(6)xSO(2). The two dual theories are obtained by two different truncations of gauged N=8 AdS_4 supergravity. We explicitly study the gauge sector of the two dual theories with the most general group allowed by supersymmetry. In the ungauged (super-Poincaré) case they exhibit the same (large) black-hole attractor solutions with dual relations between the 1/N-BPS and non-BPS configurations. The N=6 gravity multiplet has also the exceptional property to be a {\em zero-center module} of OSp(6|4), as it is the case for superconformal Yang--Mills theory in four dimensions based on SU(2,2|n) (PSU(2,2|4) for n=4) or OSp(n|4).

Twisted tori and fluxes: a no go theorem for Lie groups of weak G_2 holonomy

In this paper we prove the theorem that there exists no 7--dimensional Lie group manifold G of weak G2 holonomy. We actually prove a stronger statement, namely that there exists no 7--dimensional Lie group with negative definite Ricci tensor Ric_{IJ}. This result rules out (supersymmetric and non--supersymmetric) Freund--Rubin solutions of M--theory of the form AdS_4\times G and compactifications with non--trivial 4--form fluxes of Englert type on an internal group manifold G. A particular class of such backgrounds which, by our arguments are excluded as bulk supergravity compactifications corresponds to the so called compactifications on twisted--tori, for which G has structure constants $τ^K{}_{IJ}$ with vanishing trace $τ^J{}_{IJ}=0$. On the other hand our result does not have bearing on warped compactifications of M--theory to four dimensions and/or to compactifications in the presence of localized sources (D--branes, orientifold planes and so forth). Henceforth our result singles out the latter compactifications as the preferred hunting grounds that need to be more systematically explored in relation with all compactification features involving twisted tori.

E_{7(7)} symmetry and dual gauge algebra of M-theory on a twisted seven-torus

We consider M-theory compactified on a twisted 7-torus with fluxes when all the seven antisymmetric tensor fields in four dimensions have been dualized into scalars and thus the E_{7(7)} symmetry is recovered. We find that the Scherk--Schwarz and flux gaugings define a ``dual'' gauge algebra, subalgbra of E_{7(7)}, where some of the generators are associated with vector fields which are dual to part of the original vector fields (deriving from the 3-form). In particular they are dual to those vector fields which have been ``eaten'' by the antisymmetric tensors in the original theory by the (anti-)Higgs mechanism. The dual gauge algebra coincides with the original gauge structure when the quotient with respect to these dual (broken) gauge generators is taken. The particular example of the S-S twist corresponding to a ``flat group'' is considered.

The Scherk-Schwarz mechanism as a flux compactification with internal torsion

The aim of this paper is to make progress in the understanding of the Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction in terms of a compactification in the presence of background fluxes and torsion. From the eleven dimensional supergravity point of view, we find that a general E6(6) S-S phase may be obtained by turning on an appropriate background torsion, together with suitable fluxes, some of which can be directly identified with certain components of the four-form field-strength. Furthermore, we introduce a novel (four dimensional) approach to the study of dualities between flux/torsion compactifications of Type II/M-theory. This approach defines the action that duality should have on the background quantities, in order for the E7(7) invariance of the field equations and Bianchi identities to be restored also in the presence of fluxes/torsion. This analysis further implies the interpretation of the torsion flux as the T-dual of the NS three-form flux.

Potential and mass-matrix in gauged N=4 supergravity

We discuss the potential and mass-matrix of gauged N=4 matter coupled supergravity for the case of six matter multiplets, extending previous work by considering the dependence on all scalars. We consider all semi-simple gauge groups and analyse the potential and its first and second derivatives in the origin of the scalar manifold. Although we find in a number of cases an extremum with a positive cosmological constant, these are not stable under fluctuations of all scalar fields.

Unusual gauged supergravities from type IIA and type IIB orientifolds

We analyse different N=4 supergravities coupled to six vector multiplets corresponding to low-energy descriptions of the bulk sector of T6/Z2 orientifolds with p-brane in IIB (p odd) and in IIA (p even) superstrings. When fluxes are turned on, a gauging emerges corresponding to some non-semisimple Lie algebra related to nilpotent algebras N_p inside so(6,6), with dimension 15 + (p-3)(9-p). The non-metric axions have Stueckelberg couplings that induce a spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetries. In four cases the gauge algebra is non-abelian with a non-commutative structure of the compactification torus, due to fluxes of NS-NS and R-R forms.

Microscopic entropy of the most general four-dimensional BPS black hole

In a recent paper we have given the macroscopic and microscopic description of the generating solution of toroidally compactified string theory BPS black holes. In this note we compute its corresponding microscopic entropy. Since by definition the generating solution is the most general solution modulo U-duality transformations, this result allows for a description of the fundamental degrees of freedom accounting for the entropy of any regular BPS black holes of toroidally compactified string (or M) theory.

Regular BPS black holes: macroscopic and microscopic description of the generating solution

In this paper we construct the BPS black hole generating solution of toroidally compactified string (and M) theory, giving for it both the macroscopic and microscopic description. Choosing a proper U-duality gauge the latter will be given by a bound state made solely of D-branes. The axionic nature of the supergravity solution will be directly related to non-trivial angles between the constituent D-branes (type IIB configuration) or, in a T-dual gauge, to the presence of magnetic flux on constituent D-brane world volumes (type IIA configuration). As expected, the four dimensional axion fields arise from the dimensional reduction of non-diagonal metric tensor components or Kalb-Ramond B field components for type IIB or type IIA cases, respectively. Thanks to this result it is then now possible to fill the full 56-dimensional U-duality orbit of N=8 BPS black holes and to have a macroscopic and microscopic description of all of them.

Regular R-R and NS-NS BPS black holes

We show in a precise group theoretical fashion how the generating solution of regular BPS black holes of N=8 supergravity, which is known to be a solution also of a simpler N=2 STU model truncation, can be characterized as NS-NS or R-R charged according to the way the corresponding STU model is embedded in the original N=8 theory. Of particular interest is the class of embeddings which yield regular BPS black hole solutions carrying only R-R charge and whose microscopic description can possibly be given in terms of bound states of D-branes only. The microscopic interpretation of the bosonic fields in this class of STU models relies on the solvable Lie algebra (SLA) method. In the present article we improve this mathematical technique in order to provide two distinct descriptions for type IIA and type IIB theories and an algebraic characterization of S*T--dual embeddings within the N=8,d=4 theory. This analysis will be applied to the particular example of a four parameter (dilatonic) solution of which both the full macroscopic and microscopic descriptions will be worked out.

The generating solution of regular N=8 BPS black holes

In this paper we construct the 5 parameter generating solution of N=8 BPS regular supergravity black holes as a five parameter solution of the N=2 STU model. Our solution has a simpler form with respect to previous constructions already appeared in the literature and moreover, through the embedding [SL(2)]^3\subset SU(3,3)\subset E_{(7)7} discussed in previous papers, the action of the U-duality group is well defined. This allows to reproduce via U-duality rotations any other solution, like those corresponding to R-R black holes whose microscopic description is given by intersecting D-branes.

Solvable Lie Algebras in Type IIA, Type IIB and M Theories

We study some applications of solvable Lie algebras in type IIA, type IIB and M theories. RR and NS generators find a natural geometric interpretation in this framework. Special emphasis is given to the counting of the abelian nilpotent ideals (translational symmetries of the scalar manifolds) in arbitrary D dimensions. These are seen to be related, using Dynkin diagram techniques, to one-form counting in D+1 dimensions. A recipy for gauging isometries in this framework is also presented. In particular, we list the gauge groups both for compact and translational isometries. The former agree with some results already existing in gauged supergravity. The latter should be possibly related to the study of partial supersymmetry breaking, as suggested by a similar role played by solvable Lie algebras in N=2 gauged supergravity.
