Frascati 22 GeV Workshop Summary

This document summarizes the outcomes of the "Science at the Luminosity Frontier: Jefferson Lab at 22 GeV" workshop, held at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati in December 2024. The primary goal of the workshop was to critically assess and refine the scientific case for a proposed energy upgrade of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) to 22 GeV. This document intends to capture the progress on developing the scientific case since the publication of a lengthy "White Paper" in summer 2024 signed by about 450 authors.

Measurement of the nucleon spin structure functions for 0.01<$Q^2$<1 GeV$^2$ using CLAS

The spin structure functions of the proton and the deuteron were measured during the EG4 experiment at Jefferson Lab in 2006. Data were collected for longitudinally polarized electron scattering off longitudinally polarized NH$_3$ and ND$_3$ targets, for $Q^2$ values as small as 0.012 and 0.02 GeV$^2$, respectively, using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). This is the archival paper of the EG4 experiment that summaries the previously reported results of the polarized structure functions $g_1$, $A_1F_1$, and their moments $\overline Γ_1$, $\overline γ_0$, and $\overline I_{TT}$, for both the proton and the deuteron. In addition, we report on new results on the neutron $g_1$ extracted by combining proton and deuteron data and correcting for Fermi smearing, and on the neutron moments $\overline Γ_1$, $\overline γ_0$, and $\overline I_{TT}$ formed directly from those of the proton and the deuteron. Our data are in good agreement with the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for the proton, deuteron, and neutron. Furthermore, the isovector combination was formed for $g_1$ and the Bjorken integral $\overline Γ_1^{p-n}$, and compared to available theoretical predictions. All of our results provide for the first time extensive tests of spin observable predictions from chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT) in a $Q^2$ range commensurate with the pion mass. They motivate further improvement in $χ$EFT calculations from other approaches such as the lattice gauge method.

The analytic torsion of the finite metric cone over a compact manifold

We give an explicit formula for the $L^2$ analytic torsion of the finite metric cone over an oriented compact connected Riemannian manifold. We provide an interpretation of the different factors appearing in this formula. We prove that the analytic torsion of the cone is the finite part of the limit obtained collapsing one of the boundaries, of the ratio of the analytic torsion of the frustum to a regularising factor. We show that the regularising factor comes from the set of the non square integrable eigenfunctions of the Laplace Beltrami operator on the cone.

Singular perturbations with boundary conditions and the Casimir effect in the half space

We study the self adjoint extensions of a class of non maximal multiplication operators with boundary conditions. We show that these extensions correspond to singular rank one perturbations (in the sense of \cite{AK}) of the Laplace operator, namely the formal Laplacian with a singular delta potential, on the half space. This construction is the appropriate setting to describe the Casimir effect related to a massless scalar field in the flat space time with an infinite conducting plate and in the presence of a point like "impurity". We use the relative zeta determinant (as defined in \cite{Mul} and \cite{SZ}) in order to regularize the partition function of this model. We study the analytic extension of the associated relative zeta function, and we present explicit results for the partition function, and for the Casimir force.

The Analytic Torsion of the cone over an odd dimensional manifold

We study the analytic torsion of the cone over an orientable odd dimensional compact connected Riemannian manifold W. We prove that the logarithm of the analytic torsion of the cone decomposes as the sum of the logarithm of the root of the analytic torsion of the boundary of the cone, plus a topological term, plus a further term that is a rational linear combination of local Riemannian invariants of the boundary. We also prove that this last term coincides with the anomaly boundary term appearing in the Cheeger Muller theorem for a manifold with boundary, according to Bruning and Ma, either in the case that W is an odd sphere or has dimension smaller than six. It follows in particular that the Cheeger Muller theorem holds for the cone over an odd dimensional sphere. We also prove Poincare duality for the analytic torsion of a cone.

Reidemeister torsion and analytic torsion of discs

We study the Reidemeister torsion and the analytic torsion of the $m$ dimensional disc in the Euclidean $m$ dimensional space, using the base for the homology defined by Ray and Singer in \cite{RS}. We prove that the Reidemeister torsion coincides with a power of the volume of the disc. We study the additional terms arising in the analytic torsion due to the boundary, using generalizations of the Cheeger-Müller theorem. We use a formula proved by Brüning and Ma \cite{BM}, that predicts a new anomaly boundary term beside the known term proportional to the Euler characteristic of the boundary \cite{Luc}. Some of our results extend to the case of the cone over a sphere, in particular we evaluate directly the analytic torsion for a cone over the circle and over the two sphere. We compare the results obtained in the low dimensional cases. We also consider a different formula for the boundary term given by Dai and Fang \cite{DF}, and we show that the result obtained using this formula is inconsistent with the direct calculation of the analytic torsion.

The Quantization of Anomalous Gauge Field Theory and BRST-invariant Models of Two Dimensional Quantum Gravity

We analyze the problems with the so called gauge invariant quantization of the anomalous gauge field theories originary due to Faddeev and Shatashvili (FS). Our analysis bring to a generalization of FS method which allows to construct a series of classically equivalent theories which are non equivalent at quantum level. We prove that these classical theories are all consistent with the BRST invariance of the original gauge symmetry with suitably augmented field content. As an example of such a scenario, we discuss the class of physically distinct models of two dimensional induced gravity which are a generalization of the David-Distler-Kawai model.

A generalized model for two dimensional quantum gravity and dynamics of random surfaces for d>1

The possible interpretations of a new continuum model for the two-dimensional quantum gravity for $d>1$ ($d$=matter central charge), obtained by carefully treating both diffeomorphism and Weyl symmetries, are discussed. In particular we note that an effective field theory is achieved in low energy (large area) expansion, that may represent smooth self-avoiding random surfaces embedded in a $d$-dimensional flat space-time for arbitrary $d$. Moreover the values of some critical exponents are computed, that are in agreement with some recent numerical results.

A continuum string model for $D>1$

The non critical string (2D gravity coupled to the matter with central charge $D$) is quantized taking care of both diffeomorphism and Weyl symmetries. In incorporating the gauge fixing with respect to the Weyl symmetry, through the condition $R_g=const$, one modifies the classical result of Distler and Kawai. In particular one obtains the real string tension for an arbitrary value of central charge $D$.
