Effective decoupling of ferromagnetic sublattices by frustration in Heusler alloys

Magnetic frustration in ferromagnetic metallic systems is unusual due to the long-range and symmetric nature of the exchange interactions. In this work we prove that it is possible to obtain a highly frustrated ferromagnetic phase in a multi-sublattices cubic structure through a fine tuning of the magnetic interactions. This peculiar state is achieved in Ni-Mn-(In, Sn) Heusler alloys and results in the effective decoupling of their two intertwined ferromagnetic sublattices. One sublattice is ferromagnetic long range ordered below the macroscopic Curie temperature (TC ) whereas the second one remains disordered until a crossover to a polarized state occurs at T << TC . This result points out that a fine engineering of the magnetic interactions in metallic systems can lead to interesting novel and emergent phenomena.

Slow Magnetic Relaxation of a 12-Metallacrown-4 Complex with a Manganese(III)-Copper(II) Heterometallic Ring Motif

The heterobimetallic metallacrown (MC), (TMA)$_2${Mn(OAc)$_2$[12-MC$_{Mn(III)Cu(II)N(shi)}$-4](CH$_3$OH)}$\cdot$2.90CH$_3$OH, 1, where TMA$^+$ is tetramethylammonium, $^-$OAc is acetate, and shi$^{3-}$ is salicylhydroximate, consists of a Mn$^{II}$ ion captured in the central cavity and alternating unambiguous and ordered manganese(III) and copper(II) sites about the MC ring, a first for the archetypal MC structure design. DC-magnetometry characterization and subsequent simulation with the Spin Hamiltonian $$H = -J_1(\mathbf{s}_1+\mathbf{s}_3)\cdot\mathbf{s}_5-J_2(\mathbf{s}_2+\mathbf{s}_4)\cdot\mathbf{s}_5-J_3\sum_{i=1}^{4}\mathbf{s}_i\cdot\mathbf{s}_{i+1} + d(s_{z,1}^2 + s_{z,3}^2) + μ_B\sum_{j=1}^5 g_j\mathbf{s}_j\cdot\mathbf{B}$$ indicates an S = 5/2 ground state and a sizable axial zero-field splitting on Mn$^{III}$. AC-susceptibility measurements reveal that 1 displays slow magnetization relaxation akin to single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior.

Interface effects on an ultrathin Co film in multilayers based on the organic semiconductor Alq3

The effect of the AlOx barrier thickness on magnetic and morphological properties of Ta/Co/(AlOx)/Alq3/Si hybrid structures was systematically studied by means of atomic force microscopy, SQUID magnetometry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). All used techniques pointed out that the barrier thickness of 2 nm is required to obtain a magnetically good cobalt layer on top of Alq3. 59Co NMR measurements revealed that the AlOx barrier gives rise to the formation of an interface layer with "defective" cobalt favouring growth of "bulk" cobalt with good magnetic properties.
