Quantum state transfer through time reversal of an optical channel

Rare earth ions have exceptionally long coherence times, making them an excellent candidate for quantum information processing. A key part of this processing is quantum state transfer. We show that perfect state transfer can be achieved by time reversing the intermediate quantum channel, and suggest using a gradient echo memory (GEM) to perform this time reversal. We propose an experiment with rare earth ions to verify these predictions, where an emitter and receiver crystal are connected with an optical channel passed through a GEM. We investigate the affect experimental imperfections and collective dynamics have on the state transfer process. We demonstrate superrandiant effects can enhance coupling into the optical channel and improve the transfer fidelity. We lastly discuss how our results apply to state transfer of entangled states.

Non-abelian Weyl Commutation Relations and the Series Product of Quantum Stochastic Evolutions

We show that the series product, which serves as an algebraic rule for connecting state-based input/output systems, is intimately related to the Heisenberg group and the canonical commutation relations. The series product for quantum stochastic models then corresponds to a non-abelian generalization of the Weyl commutation relation. We show that the series product gives the general rule for combining the generators of quantum stochastic evolutions using a Lie-Trotter product formula.

On the preservation of commutation and anticommutation relations of N-level quantum systems

The goal of this paper is to provide conditions under which a quantum stochastic differential equation (QSDE) preserves the commutation and anticommutation relations of the SU(n) algebra, and thus describes the evolution of an open n-level quantum system. One of the challenges in the approach lies in the handling of the so-called anomaly coefficients of SU(n). Then, it is shown that the physical realizability conditions recently developed by the authors for open n-level quantum systems also imply preservation of commutation and anticommutation relations.

Physical Realizability Conditions for Mixed Bilinear-Linear Quantum Cascades with Pure Field Coupling

This paper aims to provide conditions under which a quantum stochastic differential equation can serve as a model for interconnection of a bilinear system evolving on an operator group SU(2) and a linear quantum system representing a quantum harmonic oscillator. To answer this question we derive algebraic conditions for the preservation of canonical commutation relations (CCRs) of quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDE) having a subset of system variables satisfying the harmonic oscillator CCRs, and the remaining variables obeying the CCRs of SU(2). Then, it is shown that from the physical realizability point of view such QSDEs correspond to bilinear-linear quantum cascades.

Cavity driven by a single photon: conditional dynamics and non-linear phase shift

We apply the stochastic master equations (quantum filter) derived by Gough et al. (Proc. 50th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2011) to a system consisting of a cavity driven by a multimode single photon field. In particular, we analyse the conditional dynamics for the problem of cross phase modulation in a doubly resonant cavity. Through the exact integration of the stochastic equations, our results reveal features of the problem unavailable from previous models.

Physical Realizability of Multi-Level Quantum Systems

This paper considers the physical realizability condition for multi-level quantum systems having polynomial Hamiltonian and multiplicative coupling with respect to several interacting boson fields. Specifically, it generalizes a recent result the authors developed for two-level quantum systems. For this purpose, the algebra of SU(n) was incorporated. As a consequence, the obtained condition is given in terms of the structure constants of SU(n).

Preservation of Commutation Relations and Physical Realizability of Open Two-Level Quantum Systems

Coherent feedback control considers purely quantum controllers in order to overcome disadvantages such as the acquisition of suitable quantum information, quantum error correction, etc. These approaches lack a systematic characterization of quantum realizability. Recently, a condition characterizing when a system described as a linear stochastic differential equation is quantum was developed. Such condition was named physical realizability, and it was developed for linear quantum systems satisfying the quantum harmonic oscillator canonical commutation relations. In this context, open two-level quantum systems escape the realm of the current known condition. When compared to linear quantum system, the challenges in obtaining such condition for such systems radicate in that the evolution equation is now a bilinear quantum stochastic differential equation and that the commutation relations for such systems are dependent on the system variables. The goal of this paper is to provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the preservation of the Pauli commutation relations, as well as to make explicit the relationship between this condition and physical realizability.

Quantum Filtering (Quantum Trajectories) for Systems Driven by Fields in Single Photon States and Superposition of Coherent States

We derive the stochastic master equations, that is to say, quantum filters, and master equations for an arbitrary quantum system probed by a continuous-mode bosonic input field in two types of non-classical states. Specifically, we consider the cases where the state of the input field is a superposition or combination of: (1) a continuous-mode single photon wave packet and vacuum, and (2) any number of continuous-mode coherent states.

On the infeasibility of entanglement generation in Gaussian quantum systems via classical control

This paper uses a system theoretic approach to show that classical linear time invariant controllers cannot generate steady state entanglement in a bipartite Gaussian quantum system which is initialized in a Gaussian state. The paper also shows that the use of classical linear controllers cannot generate entanglement in a finite time from a bipartite system initialized in a separable Gaussian state. The approach reveals connections between system theoretic concepts and the well known physical principle that local operations and classical communications cannot generate entangled states starting from separable states.

Quantum Filtering for Systems Driven by Fields in Single Photon States and Superposition of Coherent States using Non-Markovian Embeddings

The purpose of this paper is to determine quantum master and filter equations for systems coupled to fields in certain non-classical continuous-mode states. Specifically, we consider two types of field states (i) single photon states, and (ii) superpositions of coherent states. The system and field are described using a quantum stochastic unitary model. Master equations are derived from this model and are given in terms of systems of coupled equations. The output field carries information about the system, and is continuously monitored. The quantum filters are determined with the aid of an embedding of the system into a larger non-Markovian system, and are given by a system of coupled stochastic differential equations.

Quantum Master Equation and Filter for Systems Driven by Fields in a Single Photon State

The aim of this paper is to determine quantum master and filter equations for systems coupled to continuous-mode single photon fields. The system and field are described using a quantum stochastic unitary model, where the continuous-mode single photon state for the field is determined by a wavepacket pulse shape. The master equation is derived from this model and is given in terms of a system of coupled equations. The output field carries information about the system from the scattered photon, and is continuously monitored. The quantum filter is determined with the aid of an embedding of the system into a larger system, and is given by a system of coupled stochastic differential equations. An example is provided to illustrate the main results.

Network Synthesis of Linear Dynamical Quantum Stochastic Systems

The purpose of this paper is to develop a synthesis theory for linear dynamical quantum stochastic systems that are encountered in linear quantum optics and in phenomenological models of linear quantum circuits. In particular, such a theory will enable the systematic realization of coherent/fully quantum linear stochastic controllers for quantum control, amongst other potential applications. We show how general linear dynamical quantum stochastic systems can be constructed by assembling an appropriate interconnection of one degree of freedom open quantum harmonic oscillators and, in the quantum optics setting, discuss how such a network of oscillators can be approximately synthesized or implemented in a systematic way from some linear and non-linear quantum optical elements. An example is also provided to illustrate the theory.

Quantum filtering for systems driven by fermion fields

Recent developments in quantum technology mean that is it now possible to manipulate systems and measure fermion fields (e.g. reservoirs of electrons) at the quantum level. This progress has motivated some recent work on filtering theory for quantum systems driven by fermion fields by Korotkov, Milburn and others. The purpose of this paper is to develop fermion filtering theory using the fermion quantum stochastic calculus. We explain that this approach has close connections to the classical filtering theory that is a fundamental part of the systems and control theory that has developed over the past 50 years.

Homodyne locking of a squeezer

We report on the successful implementation of a new approach to locking the frequencies of an OPO-based squeezed-vacuum source and its driving laser. The technique allows the simultaneous measurement of the phase-shifts induced by a cavity, which may be used for the purposes of frequency-locking, as well as the simultaneous measurement of the sub-quantum-noise-limited (sub-QNL) phase quadrature output of the OPO. The homodyne locking technique is cheap, easy to implement and has the distinct advantage that subsequent homodyne measurements are automatically phase-locked. The homodyne locking technique is also unique in that it is a sub-QNL frequency discriminator.

Squeezing Components in Linear Quantum Feedback Networks

The aim of this paper is to extend linear quantum dynamical network theory to include static Bogoliubov components (such as squeezers). Within this integrated quantum network theory we provide general methods for cascade or series connections, as well as feedback interconnections using linear fractional transformations. In addition, we define input-output maps and transfer functions for representing components and describing convergence. We also discuss the underlying group structure in this theory arising from series interconnection. Several examples illustrate the theory.

Guaranteed Cost LQG Control of Uncertain Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems

In this paper, we formulate and solve a guaranteed cost control problem for a class of uncertain linear stochastic quantum systems. For these quantum systems, a connection with an associated classical (non-quantum) system is first established. Using this connection, the desired guaranteed cost results are established. The theory presented is illustrated using an example from quantum optics.

A Quantum Langevin Formulation of Risk-Sensitive Optimal Control

In this paper we formulate a risk-sensitive optimal control problem for continuously monitored open quantum systems modelled by quantum Langevin equations. The optimal controller is expressed in terms of a modified conditional state, which we call a risk-sensitive state, that represents measurement knowledge tempered by the control purpose. One of the two components of the optimal controller is dynamic, a filter that computes the risk-sensitive state. The second component is an optimal control feedback function that is found by solving the dynamic programming equation. The optimal controller can be implemented using classical electronics. The ideas are illustrated using an example of feedback control of a two-level atom.
