A versatile stochastic dissemination model

This paper consider a highly general dissemination model that keeps track of the stochastic evolution of the distribution of wealth over a set of agents. There are two types of events: (i) units of wealth externally arrive, and (ii) units of wealth are redistributed among the agents, while throughout Markov modulation is allowed. We derive a system of coupled differential equations describing the joint transient distribution of the agents' wealth values, which translate into linear differential equations when considering the corresponding means and (co-)variances. While our model uses the (economic) terminology of wealth being distributed over agents, we illustrate through a series of examples that it can be used considerably more broadly. Indeed, it also facilitates the analysis of the spread of opinions over a population (thus generalizing existing opinion dynamics models), and the analysis of the dynamics of a file storage system (thus allowing the assessment of the efficacy of storage policies).

Rejection and Importance Sampling based Perfect Simulation for Gibbs hard-sphere models

Coupling from the past (CFTP) methods have been used to generate perfect samples from finite Gibbs hard-sphere models, an important class of spatial point processes, which is a set of spheres with the centers on a bounded region that are distributed as a homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP) conditioned that spheres do not overlap with each other. We propose an alternative importance sampling based rejection methodology for the perfect sampling of these models. We analyze the asymptotic expected running time complexity of the proposed method when the intensity of the reference PPP increases to infinity while the (expected) sphere radius decreases to zero at varying rates. We further compare the performance of the proposed method analytically and numerically with a naive rejection algorithm and popular dominated CFTP algorithms. Our analysis relies upon identifying large deviations decay rates of the non-overlapping probability of spheres whose centers are distributed as a homogeneous PPP.

A large deviations principle for infinite-server queues in a random environment

This paper studies an infinite-server queue in a random environment, meaning that the arrival rate, the service requirements and the server work rate are modulated by a general càdlàg stochastic background process. To prove a large deviations principle, the concept of attainable parameters is introduced. Scaling both the arrival rates and the background process, a large deviations principle for the number of jobs in the system is derived using attainable parameters. Finally, some known results about Markov-modulated infinite-server queues are generalized and new results for several background processes and scalings are established in examples.

On the upper bound in Varadhan's Lemma

In this paper, we generalize the upper bound in Varadhan's Lemma. The standard formulation of Varadhan's Lemma contains two important elements, namely an upper semicontinuous integrand and a rate function with compact sublevel sets. However, motivated by results from queueing theory, we do not assume that rate functions have compact sublevel sets. Moreover, we drop the assumption that the integrand is upper semicontinuous and replace it by a weaker condition. We prove that the upper bound in Varadhan's Lemma still holds under these weaker conditions. Additionally, we show that only measurability of the integrand is required when the rate function is continuous.
