The Traffic Reaction Model: A kinetic compartmental approach to road traffic modeling

In this work, a family of finite volume discretization schemes for LWR-type first order traffic flow models (with possible on- and off-ramps) is proposed: the Traffic Reaction Model (TRM). These schemes yield systems of ODEs that are formally equivalent to the kinetic systems used to model chemical reaction networks. An in-depth numerical analysis of the TRM is performed. On the one hand, the analytical properties of the scheme (nonnegative, conservative, capacity-preserving, monotone) and its relation to more traditional schemes for traffic flow models (Godunov, CTM) are presented. Finally, the link between the TRM and kinetic systems is exploited to offer a novel compartmental interpretation of traffic models. In particular, kinetic theory is used to derive dynamical properties (namely persistence and Lyapunov stability) of the TRM for a specific road configuration. Two extensions of the proposed model, to networks and changing driving conditions, are also described.

On the spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm problem in conical space: bound states, scattering and helicity nonconservation

In this work the bound state and scattering problems for a spin-1/2 particle undergone to an Aharonov-Bohm potential in a conical space in the nonrelativistic limit are considered. The presence of a δ-function singularity, which comes from the Zeeman spin interaction with the magnetic flux tube, is addressed by the self-adjoint extension method. One of the advantages of the present approach is the determination of the self-adjoint extension parameter in terms of physics of the problem. Expressions for the energy bound states, phase-shift and $S$ matrix are determined in terms of the self-adjoint extension parameter, which is explicitly determined in terms of the parameters of the problem. The relation between the bound state and zero modes and the failure of helicity conservation in the scattering problem and its relation with the gyromagnetic ratio $g$ are discussed. Also, as an application, we consider the spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm problem in conical space plus a two-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator.

Physical regularization for the spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm problem in conical space

We examine the bound state and scattering problem of a spin-one-half particle undergone to an Aharonov-Bohm potential in a conical space in the nonrelativistic limit. The crucial problem of the δ-function singularity coming from the Zeeman spin interaction with the magnetic flux tube is solved through the self-adjoint extension method. Using two different approaches already known in the literature, both based on the self-adjoint extension method, we obtain the self-adjoint extension parameter to the bound state and scattering scenarios in terms of the physics of the problem. It is shown that such a parameter is the same for both situations. The method is general and is suitable for any quantum system with a singular Hamiltonian that has bound and scattering states.

The Planck/LFI Radiometer Electronics Box Assembly

The Radiometer Electronics Box Assembly (REBA) is the control and data processing on board computer of the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) of the Planck mission (ESA). The REBA was designed and built incorporating state of the art processors, communication interfaces and real time operating system software in order to meet the scientific performance of the LFI. We present a technical summary of the REBA, including a physical, functional, electrical, mechanical and thermal description. Aspects of the design and development, the assembly, the integration and the verification of the equipment are provided. A brief description of the LFI on board software is given including the Low-Level Software and the main functionalities and architecture of the Application Software. The compressor module, which has been developed as an independent product, later integrated in the application, is also described in this paper. Two identical engineering models EM and AVM, the engineering qualification model EQM, the flight model FM and flight spare have been manufactured and tested. Low-level and Application software have been developed. Verification activities demonstrated that the REBA hardware and software fulfil all the specifications and perform as required for flight operation.
