Massive white dwarfs in $f(R,L_m)$ gravity

In this work, we investigate the equilibrium configurations of massive white dwarfs (MWD) in the context of modified gravity, namely $f(R,L_m)$ gravity, where $R$ stands for the Ricci scalar and $L_m$ is the Lagrangian matter density. We focused on the specific case $f(R,L_m) = R/2 + L_m + σRL_m$, i.e., we have considered a non-minimal coupling between the gravity field and the matter field, with $σ$ being the coupling constant. For the first time, the theory is applied to white dwarfs, in particular to study massive white dwarfs, which is a topic of great interest in the last years. The equilibrium configurations predict maximum masses which are above the Chandrasekhar mass limit. The most important effect of the theory is to increase significantly the mass for stars with radius < 2000 km. We found that the theory can accommodate the super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs for different star compositions. Apart from this, the theory recovers the General Relativity results for stars with radii larger than 3000 km, independent of the value of $σ$.

Extraction of the proton charge radius from experiments

Static properties of hadrons such as their radii and other moments of the electric and magnetic distributions can only be extracted using theoretical methods and not directly measured from experiments. As a result, discrepancies between the extracted values from different precision measurements can exist. The proton charge radius, $r_p$, which is either extracted from electron proton elastic scattering data or from hydrogen atom spectroscopy seems to be no exception. The value $r_p = 0.84087(39)$ fm extracted from muonic hydrogen spectroscopy is about 4% smaller than that obtained from electron proton scattering or standard hydrogen spectroscopy. The resolution of this so called proton radius puzzle has been attempted in many different ways over the past six years. The present article reviews these attempts with a focus on the methods of extracting the radius.

Signature of the N=126 shell closure in dwell times of alpha-particle tunneling

Characteristic quantities such as the penetration and preformation probabilities, assault frequency and tunneling times in the tunneling description of alpha decay of heavy nuclei are explored to reveal their sensitivity to neutron numbers in the vicinity of the magic neutron number $N$ = 126. Using realistic nuclear potentials, the sensitivity of these quantities to the parameters of the theoretical approach is also tested. An investigation of the region from $N=116$ to $N=132$ in Po nuclei reveals that the tunneling $α$ particle spends the least amount of time with an $N=126$ magic daughter nucleus. The shell closure at $N=126$ seems to affect the behaviour of the dwell times of the tunneling alpha particles and this occurs through the influence of the $Q$-values involved.

Lorentz Contracted Proton

The proton charge and magnetization density distributions can be related to the well known Sachs electromagnetic form factors $G_{E,M}({\bm q}^{2})$ through Fourier transforms, only in the Breit frame. The Breit frame however moves with relativistic velocities in the Lab and a Lorentz boost must be applied to the form factors before extracting the static properties of the proton from the corresponding densities. Apart from this, the Fourier transform relating the densities and form factors is inherently a non-relativistic expression. We show that the relativistic corrections to it can be obtained by extending the standard Breit equation to higher orders in its $1/c^2$ expansion. We find that the inclusion of the above corrections reduces the size of the proton determined from electron proton scattering data. Indeed the central value of the latest proton radius of $r_p = 0.879$ fm as determined from e-p scattering changes to $r_p = 0.8404$ fm after applying corrections.

Light on curved backgrounds

We consider the motion of light on different spacetime manifolds by calculating the deflection angle, lensing properties and by probing into the possibility of bound states. The metrics in which we examine the light motion include, among other, a general relativistic Dark Matter metric, a dirty Black Hole and a Worm Hole metric, the last two inspired by non-commutative geometry. The lensing in a Holographic Screen metric is discussed in detail. We study also the bending of light around naked singularities like, e.g., the Janis-Newman-Winicour metric and include other cases. A generic property of light behaviour in these exotic metrics is pointed out. For the standard metric like the Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-de Sitter cases we improve the accuracy of the lensing results for the weak and strong regime.

Potentials of the Heun class: the triconfluent case

Since the advent of quantum mechanics different approaches to find analytical solutions of the Schrödinger equation have been successfully developed. Here we follow and generalize the approach pioneered by Natanzon and others by which the Schrödinger equations can be transformed into another well-known equation for transcendental function (e.g., the hypergeometric equation). This sets a class of potentials for which this transformation is possible. Our generalization consists in finding potentials allowing the transformation of the Schrödinger equation into a triconfluent Heun equation. We find the energy eigenvalues of this class of potentials, the eigenfunction and the exact superpartners.

Tunneling times and bremsstrahlung in alpha decay

A semi-classical model based on quantum time concepts is presented for the evaluation of bremsstrahlung emission probabilities in alpha decay of nuclei. The contribution to the bremsstrahlung emission from the different regions in tunneling is investigated using realistic double folded nuclear and Coulomb potentials. Within this model, the contribution from the radiation emitted in front of the barrier before tunneling is much larger than that while leaving the barrier. A comparison with the data on $^{210}$Po shows that the results are sensitive to the nuclear potential and the rectangular well used in many of the quantum mechanical approaches can even give qualitatively different results.

Determining the size of the proton

A measurement of the Lamb shift of 49,881.88(76) GHz in muonic hydrogen in conjunction with theoretical estimates of the proton structure effects was recently used to deduce an accurate but rather small radius of the proton. Such an important shift in the understanding of fundamental values needs reconfirmation. Using a different approach with electromagnetic form factors of the proton, we obtain a new expression for the transition energy, $Δ= E_{2P_{{3}/{2}}}^{f=2} - E_{2S_{{1}/{2}}}^{f=1}$, in muonic hydrogen and deduce a proton radius, $r_p = 0.831$ fm.

Breit Equation with Form Factors in the Hydrogen Atom

The Breit equation with two electromagnetic form-factors is studied to obtain a potential with finite size corrections. This potential with proton structure effects includes apart from the standard Coulomb term, the Darwin term, retarded potentials, spin-spin and spin-orbit interactions corresponding to the fine and hyperfine structures in hydrogen atom. Analytical expressions for the hyperfine potential with form factors and the subsequent energy levels including the proton structure corrections are given using the dipole form of the form factors. Numerical results are presented for the finite size corrections in the 1S and 2S hyperfine splittings in the hydrogen atom, the Sternheim observable $D_{21}$ and the 2S and 2P hyperfine splittings in muonic hydrogen. Finally, a comparison with some other existing methods in literature is presented.

Comment on "Quasinormal modes in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime: A simple derivation of the level spacing of the frequencies"

It is shown here that the extraction of quasinormal modes (QNMs) within the first Born approximation of the scattering amplitude is mathematically not well founded. Indeed, the constraints on the existence of the scattering amplitude integral lead to inequalities for the imaginary parts of the QNM frequencies. For instance, in the Schwarzschild case, $0 \leq ω_I < κ$ (where $κ$ is the surface gravity at the horizon) invalidates the poles deduced from the first Born approximation method, namely, $ω_n = i n κ$.

On Born approximation in black hole scattering

A massless field propagating on spherically symmetric black hole metrics such as the Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström and Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter backgrounds is considered. In particular, explicit formulae in terms of transcendental functions for the scattering of massless scalar particles off black holes are derived within a Born approximation. It is shown that the conditions on the existence of the Born integral forbid a straightforward extraction of the quasi normal modes using the Born approximation for the scattering amplitude. Such a method has been used in literature. We suggest a novel, well defined method, to extract the large imaginary part of quasinormal modes via the Coulomb-like phase shift. Furthermore, we compare the numerically evaluated exact scattering amplitude with the Born one to find that the approximation is not very useful for the scattering of massless scalar, electromagnetic as well as gravitational waves from black holes.

Maximal extension of the Schwarzschild spacetime inspired by noncommutative geometry

We derive a transformation of the noncommutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild solution into new coordinates such that the apparent unphysical singularities of the metric are removed. Moreover, we give the maximal singularity-free atlas for the manifold with the metric under consideration. This atlas reveals many new features e.g. it turns out to describe an infinite lattice of asymptotically flat universes connected by black hole tunnels.

No classical limit of quantum decay for broad states

Though the classical treatment of spontaneous decay leads to an exponential decay law, it is well known that this is an approximation of the quantum mechanical result which is a non-exponential at very small and large times for narrow states. The non exponential nature at large times is however hard to establish from experiments. A method to recover the time evolution of unstable states from a parametrization of the amplitude fitted to data is presented. We apply the method to a realistic example of a very broad state, the sigma meson and reveal that an exponential decay is not a valid approximation at any time for this state. This example derived from experiment, shows the unique nature of broad resonances.

On the existence of certain axisymmetric interior metrics

One of the effects of noncommutative coordinate operators is that the delta-function connected to the quantum mechanical amplitude between states sharp to the position operator gets smeared by a Gaussian distribution. Although this is not the full account of effects of noncommutativity, this effect is in particular important, as it removes the point singularities of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström solutions. In this context, it seems to be of some importance to probe also into ring-like singularities which appear in the Kerr case. In particular, starting with an anisotropic energy-momentum tensor and a general axisymmetric ansatz of the metric together with an arbitrary mass distribution (e.g. Gaussian) we derive the full set of Einstein equations that the Noncommutative Geometry inspired Kerr solution should satisfy. Using these equations we prove two theorems regarding the existence of certain Kerr metrics inspired by Noncommutative Geometry.

The repulsive nature of naked singularities from the point of view of Quantum Mechanics

We use the Dirac equation coupled to a background metric to examine what happens to quantum mechanical observables like the probability density and the radial current in the vicinity of a naked singularity of the Reissner-Nordström type. We find that the wave function of the Dirac particle is regular in the point of the singularity. We show that the probability density is exactly zero at the singularity reflecting quantum-mechanically the repulsive nature of the naked singularity. Furthermore, the surface integral of the radial current over a sphere in the vicinity of the naked singularity turns out to be also zero.

Velocity and velocity bounds in static spherically symmetric metrics

We find simple expressions for velocity of massless particles in dependence of the distance $r$ in Schwarzschild coordinates. For massive particles these expressions put an upper bound for the velocity. Our results apply to static spherically symmetric metrics. We use these results to calculate the velocity for different cases: Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Reissner-Nordström with and without the cosmological constant. We emphasize the differences between the behavior of the velocity in the different metrics and find that in cases with naked singularity there exists always a region where the massless particle moves with a velocity bigger than the velocity of light in vacuum. In the case of Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter we completely characterize the radial velocity and the metric in an algebraic way. We contrast the case of classical naked singularities with naked singularities emerging from metric inspired by noncommutative geometry where the radial velocity never exceeds one. Furthermore, we solve the Einstein equations for a constant and polytropic density profile and calculate the radial velocity of a photon moving in spaces with interior metric. The polytropic case of radial velocity displays an unexpected variation bounded by a local minimum and maximum.

The fate of a gravitational wave in de Sitter spacetime

If we want to explain the recently discovered accelerated stage of the universe, one of the option we have is to modify the Einstein tensor. The simplest such modification, in agreement with all observations, is the positive cosmological constant $Λ$. Such a modification will also have its impact on local observables and on the propagation of weak gravitational waves. We show here that the inclusion of a cosmological constant impedes the detection of a gravitational wave if the latter is produced at a distance larger than ${\cal L}_{\rm crit}=(6\sqrt{2}πf \hat{h}/\sqrt{5})r_Λ^2$ where $r_Λ=1/\sqrtΛ$ and $f$ and $\hat{h}$ are the frequency and the strain of the wave, respectively. ${\cal L}_{\rm crit}$ is of astrophysical order of magnitude. We interpret the result in the sense that the gravitational wave interpretation is only possible if the characteristic wave properties are smaller than the non-oscillatory solution due to $Λ$.

Breit type equation for mesonic atoms

The finite size effects and relativistic corrections in pionic and kaonic hydrogen are evaluated by generalizing the Breit equation for a spin-0 - spin-1/2 amplitude with the inclusion of the hadron electromagnetic form factors. The agreement of the relativistic corrections to the energies of the mesonic atoms with other methods used to evaluate them is not exact, but reasonably good. The precision values of the energy shifts due to the strong interaction, extracted from data, are however subject to the hadronic form factor uncertainties.

Time Delay Plots of Unflavoured Baryons

We explore the usefulness of the existing relations between the $S$-matrix and time delay in characterizing baryon resonances in pion-nucleon scattering. We draw attention to the fact that the existence of a positive maximum in time delay is a necessary criterion for the existence of a resonance and should be used as a constraint in conventional analyses which locate resonances from poles of the $S$-matrix and Argand diagrams. The usefulness of the time delay plots of resonances is demonstrated through a detailed analysis of the time delay in several partial waves of $πN$ elastic scattering.

Collision times in pi-pi and pi-K scattering and spectroscopy of meson resonances

Using the concept of collision time (time delay) introduced by Eisenbud and Wigner and its connection to on-shell intermediate unstable states, we study mesonic resonances in pi-pi and pi-K scattering. The time-delay method proves its usefulness by revealing the spectrum of the well-known rho- and K*-mesons and by supporting some speculations on rho-mesons in the 1200 MeV region. We use this method further to shed some light on more speculative meson resonances, among others the enigmatic scalars. We confirm the existence of chiralons below 1 GeV in the unflavoured and strange meson sector.

Leptonic CP Violation in Supersymmetric Standard Model

We point out the possibility of spontaneous and hard CP-violation in the scalar potential of R-parity broken supersymmetric Standard Model. The existence of spontaneous CP-violation depends crucially on the R-parity breaking terms in the superpotential and, in addition, on the choice of the soft supersymmetry breaking terms. Unlike in theories with R-parity conservation, it is natural, in the context of the present model, for the sneutrinos to acquire (complex) vacuum expectation values. In the context of this model we examine here the global implications, like the strength of the CP-violating interactions and the neutrino masses.

A Note on Charge Quantization Through Anomaly Cancellation

In a minimal extension of the Standard Model, in which new neutral fermions have been introduced, we show that the requirement of vanishing anomalies fixes the hypercharges of all fermions uniquely. This naturally leads to electric charge quantization in this minimal scenario which has features similar to the Standard Model: invariance under the gauge group $SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_Y$, conservation of the total lepton number and masslessness for the ordinary neutrinos. Such minimal models might arise as low-energy realizations of some heterotic superstring models or $SO(10)$ grand unified theories.

CP-odd Neutral Higgs Effects in Top -- anti-Top Production

We study $CP$ violation in the process $e^+e^- \to t\bar{t} ν\barν$ at an $e^+e^-$-TeV collider. As the source of $CP$ violation we assume a two-Higgs doublet model with an explicitly $CP$-noninvariant Higgs potential. Sizeable $CP$-odd observables originating from the subprocess reaction, $W^+W^- \to t\bar{t}$, may arise as a result of finite width effects of the neutral Higgs particles. $CPT$ constraints due to final (initial) state interactions are also taken into account. Numerical estimates of the $CP$ asymmetry are given.

CP-Violation with Bosons

We formulate the conditions under which a purely bosonic theory (without fermions) containing neutral spin-0 particles and vector (gauge) bosons violates the CP-symmetry through the presence of CP-even and CP-odd operators in the Lagrangian. This is done without reference to explicitly CP-violating scalar sector of extended standard models (SM) with two or more Higgs doublets. The Lagrangian expressed in the mass basis of the spin-0 fields can, however, in certain cirumstances be identified with a part of the CP-violating SM with two Higgs doublets. It is instructive to consider the manifestation of CP-violation in the mass basis since this leads directly to suggestions of genuine CP-signals.
