Widening, Transition and Coalescence of Local Resonance Band Gaps in Multi-resonator Acoustic Metamaterials: From Unit Cells to Finite Chains

Local resonance band gaps in acoustic metamaterials are widely known for their strong attenuation yet narrow frequency span. The latter limits the practical ability to implement subwavelength band gaps for broadband attenuation and has motivated novel metamaterial designs in recent years. In this paper, we investigate the behavior of acoustic metamaterials where unit cells house multiple resonating elements stacked in different configurations, aimed at instigating a wide array of wave propagation profiles that are otherwise unattainable. The dispersion mechanics of the multi-resonator metamaterials are developed using purely analytical expressions which depict and explain the underlying dynamics of such systems both at the unit cell level as well as the frequency response of their finite realizations. The framework reveals the mechanism behind the transition of the lower and upper band gap bounds in metamaterials with parallel resonators resulting in a significant band gap widening. The analysis also illustrates the ability of metamaterials with dual-periodic super cells to exhibit a range of dispersion transitions culminating in collapsing solutions of acoustic and optic bands, enabling a coalescence of local resonance band gaps, vanishing resonances, and a number of intriguing scenarios in between.

Experimental Observation of Nonreciprocal Waves in a Resonant Metamaterial Beam

Space-time-varying materials pledge to deliver nonreciprocal dispersion in linear systems by inducing an artificial momentum bias. Although such a paradigm eliminates the need for actual motion of the medium, experimental realization of space-time structures with dynamically changing material properties has been elusive. In this letter, we present an elastic metamaterial that exploits stiffness variations in an array of geometrically phase-shifted resonators -- rather than external material stimulation -- to induce a temporal modulation. We experimentally demonstrate that the resulting bias breaks time-reversal symmetry in the resonant metamaterial, and achieves a nonreciprocal tilt of dispersion modes within dynamic modulation regimes.

Non-reciprocal Wave Phenomena in Energy Self-reliant Gyric Metamaterials

This work presents a mechanism by which non-reciprocal wave transmission is achieved in a class of gyric metamaterial lattices with embedded rotating elements. A modulation of the device's angular momentum is obtained via prescribed rotations of a set of locally housed spinning motors and are then used to induce space-periodic, time-periodic, as well as space-time-periodic variations which influence wave propagation in distinct ways. Owing to their dependence on gyroscopic effects, such systems are able to break reciprocal wave symmetry without stiffness perturbations rendering them consistently stable as well as energy self-reliant. Dispersion patterns, band gap emergence, as well as non-reciprocal wave transmission in the space-time-periodic gyric metamaterials are predicted both analytically from the gyroscopic system dynamics as well as numerically via time-transient simulations. In addition to breaking reciprocity, we show that the energy content of a frictionless gyric metamaterial is conserved over one temporal modulation cycle enabling it to exhibit a stable response irrespective of the pumping frequency.

Uncertainty Quantification of Tunable Elastic Metamaterials using Polynomial Chaos

Owing to their periodic and intricate configurations, metamaterials engineered for acoustic and elastic wave control inevitably suffer from manufacturing anomalies and deviate from theoretical dispersion predictions. This work exploits the Polynomial Chaos theory to quantify the magnitude and extent of these deviations and assess their impact on the desired behavior. It is shown that uncertainties stemming from surface roughness, tolerances, and other inconsistencies in a metamaterial's unit cell parameters alter the targetted band gap width, location and the confidence level with which it is guaranteed. The effect of uncertainties are projected from a Bloch-wave dispersion analysis of three distinct phononic and resonant cellular configurations and are further confirmed in the frequency response the finite structures. The analysis concludes with a unique algorithm intended to guide the design of metamaterials in the presence of system uncertainties.
