Generalized Galileons: instabilities of bouncing and Genesis cosmologies and modified Genesis

We study spatially flat bouncing cosmologies and models with the early-time Genesis epoch in a popular class of generalized Galileon theories. We ask whether there exist solutions of these types which are free of gradient and ghost instabilities. We find that irrespectively of the forms of the Lagrangian functions, the bouncing models either are plagued with these instabilities or have singularities. The same result holds for the original Genesis model and its variants in which the scale factor tends to a constant as $t\to -\infty$. The result remains valid in theories with additional matter that obeys the Null Energy Condition and interacts with the Galileon only gravitationally. We propose a modified Genesis model which evades our no-go argument and give an explicit example of healthy cosmology that connects the modified Genesis epoch with kination (the epoch still driven by the Galileon field, which is a conventional massless scalar field at that stage).

Conformal Universe as false vacuum decay

We point out that the (pseudo-)conformal Universe scenario may be realized as decay of conformally invariant, metastable vacuum, which proceeds via spontaneous nucleation and subsequent growth of a bubble of a putative new phase. We study perturbations about the bubble and show that their leading late-time properties coincide with those inherent in the original models with homogeneously rolling backgrounds. In particular, the perturbations of a spectator dimension-zero field have flat power spectrum.

Towards conformal cosmology

Approximate de Sitter symmetry of inflating Universe is responsible for the approximate flatness of the power spectrum of scalar perturbations. However, this is not the only option. Another symmetry which can explain nearly scale-invariant power spectrum is conformal invariance. We give a short review of models based on conformal symmetry which lead to the scale-invariant spectrum of the scalar perturbations. We discuss also potentially observable features of these models.

Neutrino hierarchy and fermion spectrum from a single family in six dimensions: realistic predictions

In this paper, we move from a "proof of concept" to challenging predictions in a flavour model emerging from a single fermion family in six dimensions (6-D) with the two extra dimensions compactified on a sphere. The most striking predictions (beyond the basic ingredients already demonstrated for a realistic quark mass pattern) are for the neutrino sector. Not only can 4-D Majorana masses be generated from 6-D (where no Majorana spinors exist), but Majorana masses are naturally associated to large mixing. The model favours inverted hierarchy and a quasi-Dirac partial suppression of neutrinoless double beta decay.

Heavy-meson physics and flavour violation with a single generation

We study flavour-violating processes which involve heavy B- and D-mesons and are mediated by Kaluza-Klein modes of gauge bosons in a previously suggested model where three generations of the Standard Model fermions originate from a single generation in six dimensions. We find the bound on the size R of the extra spatial dimensions 1/R>3.3 TeV, which arises from the three-body decay B_s to K mu e. Due to the still too low statistics this bound is much less stringent than the constraint arising from K to mu e, 1/R>64 TeV, which was found in a previous work (Frere et al., JHEP, 2003). Nevertheless, we argue that a clear signature of the model would be an observation of K to mu e and B_s to K mu e decays without observations of other flavour and lepton number changing processes at the same precision level.

Dynamical vs spectator models of (pseudo-)conformal Universe

We discuss two versions of the conformal scenario for generating scalar cosmological perturbations: a spectator version with a scalar field conformally coupled to gravity and carrying negligible energy density, and a dynamical version with a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity and dominating the cosmological evolution. By making use of the Newtonian gauge, we show that (i) no UV strong coupling scale is generated below $M_{Pl}$ due to mixing with metric perturbations in the dynamical scenario, and (ii) the dynamical and spectator models yield identical results to the leading non-linear order. We argue that these results, which include potentially observable effects like statistical anisotropy and non-Gaussianity, are characteristic of the entire class of conformal models. As an example, we reproduce, within the dynamical scenario and working in comoving gauge, our earlier result on the statistical anisotropy, which was originally obtained within the spectator approach.

Flavour puzzle or Why neutrinos are different?

We present a short review of a 6-dimensional model where a flavour puzzle of the Standard Model fermions finds an elegant solution. The mechanism is based on an idea that the three fermionic generations originate from a single 6D family. The model explains in a natural way both charged fermions mass hierarchy and small mixings in the quark sector, and tiny neutrino masses and large neutrino mixings. We also discuss some phenomenological aspects of the model which can distinguish this class of the models from another one and can help to look for manifestations of new physics at colliders and other experiments.

Non-Gaussianity of scalar perturbations generated by conformal mechanisms

We consider theories which explain the flatness of the power spectrum of scalar perturbations in the Universe by conformal invariance, such as conformal rolling model and Galilean Genesis. We show that to the leading {\it non-linear} order, perturbations in all models from this class behave in one and the same way, at least if the energy density of the relevant fields is small compared to the total energy density (spectator approximation). We then turn to the intrinsic non-Gaussianities in these models (as opposed to non-Gaussianities that may be generated during subsequent evolution). The intrinsic bispectrum vanishes, so we perform the complete calculation of the trispectrum and compare it with the trispecta of local forms in various limits. The most peculiar feature of our trispectrum is a (fairly mild) singularity in the limit where two momenta are equal in absolute value and opposite in direction (folded limit). Generically, the intrinsic non-Gaussianity can be of detectable size.

Scalar perturbations in conformal rolling scenario with intermediate stage

Scalar cosmological perturbations with nearly flat power spectrum may originate from perturbations of the phase of a scalar field conformally coupled to gravity and rolling down negative quartic potential. We consider a version of this scenario whose specific property is a long intermediate stage between the end of conformal rolling and horizon exit of the phase perturbations. Such a stage is natural, e.g., in cosmologies with ekpyrosis or genesis. Its existence results in small negative scalar tilt, statistical anisotropy of all even multipoles starting from quardupole of general structure (in contrast to the usually discussed single quadrupole of special type) and non-Gaussianity of a peculiar form.

Cosmological density perturbations from conformal scalar field: infrared properties and statistical anisotropy

We consider a scenario in which primordial scalar perturbations are generated when complex conformal scalar field rolls down its negative quartic potential. Initially, these are the perturbations of the phase of this field; they are converted into the adiabatic perturbations at a later stage. A potentially dangerous feature of this scenario is the existence of perturbations in the radial field direction, which have red power spectrum. We show, however, that to the linear order in the small parameter - the quartic self-coupling - the infrared effects are completely harmless, as they can be absorbed into field redefinition. We then evaluate the statistical anisotropy inherent in the model due to the existence of the long-ranged radial perturbations. To the linear order in the quartic self-coupling the statistical anisotropy is free of the infrared effects. The latter show up at the quadratic order in the self-coupling and result in the mild (logarithmic) enhancement of the corresponding contribution to the statistical anisotropy. The resulting statistical anisotropy is a combination of a larger term which, however, decays as momentum increases, and a smaller term which is independent of momentum.

Properties of scalar perturbations generated by conformal scalar field

Primordial scalar perturbations may be generated when complex conformal scalar field rolls down its negative quartic potential. We begin with the discussion of peculiar infrared properties of this scenario. We then consider the statistical anisotropy inherent in the model. Finally, we discuss the non-Gaussianity of scalar perturbations. Because of symmetries, the bispectrum vanishes identically. We present a general expression for the trispectrum and give its explicit form in the folded limit.
