Structure and dehydration mechanism of the proton conducting oxide Ba$_{2}$In$_{2}$O$_{5}$(H$_{2}$O)$_{x}$

The structure and dehydration mechanism of the proton conducting oxide Ba$_{2}$In$_{2}$O$_{5}$(H$_{2}$O)$_{x}$ are investigated by means of variable temperature Raman spectroscopy together with inelastic neutron scattering. At room temperature, Ba$_{2}$In$_{2}$O$_{5}$(H$_{2}$O)$_{x}$ is found to be fully hydrated ($x=1$) and to have a perovskite-like structure, which dehydrates gradually with increasing temperature and at around 600 $^{\circ}$C the material is essentially completely dehydrated ($x=0$). The dehydrated material exhibits a brownmillerite structure, which is featured by alternating layers of InO$_{6}$ octahedra and InO$_{4}$ tetrahedra. The transition from a perovskite-like to a brownmillerite-like structure is featured by a hydrated-to-intermediate phase transition at $ca.$ 370 °C. The structure of the intermediate phase is similar to the structure of the fully dehydrated material, but with the difference that it exhibits a non-centrosymmetric distortion of the InO$_{6}$ octahedra not present in the latter. For temperatures below the hydrated-to-intermediate phase transition, dehydration is featured by the release of protons confined to the layers of InO$_{4}$ tetrahedra, whereas above the transition also protons bound to oxygens of the layers of InO$_{6}$ are released. Finally, we found that the O-H stretch region of the vibrational spectra is not consistent with a single-phase spectrum, but is in agreement with the superposition of spectra associated with two different proton configurations. The relative contributions of the two proton configurations depend on how the sample is hydrated.

L'-band AGPM vector vortex coronagraph's first light on LBTI/LMIRCam

We present the first observations obtained with the L'-band AGPM vortex coronagraph recently installed on LBTI/LMIRCam. The AGPM (Annular Groove Phase Mask) is a vector vortex coronagraph made from diamond subwavelength gratings. It is designed to improve the sensitivity and dynamic range of high-resolution imaging at very small inner working angles, down to 0.09 arcseconds in the case of LBTI/LMIRCam in the L' band. During the first hours on sky, we observed the young A5V star HR\,8799 with the goal to demonstrate the AGPM performance and assess its relevance for the ongoing LBTI planet survey (LEECH). Preliminary analyses of the data reveal the four known planets clearly at high SNR and provide unprecedented sensitivity limits in the inner planetary system (down to the diffraction limit of 0.09 arcseconds).

L'-band AGPM vector vortex coronagraph's first light on VLT/NACO: Discovery of a late-type companion at two beamwidths from an F0V star

Context. High contrast imaging has thoroughly combed through the limited search space accessible with first-generation ground-based adaptive optics instruments and the Hubble Space Telescope. Only a few objects were discovered, and many non-detections reported and statistically interpreted. The field is now in need of a technological breakthrough. Aim. Our aim is to open a new search space with first-generation systems such as NACO at the Very Large Telescope, by providing ground-breaking inner working angle (IWA) capabilities in the L' band. The L' band is a sweet spot for high contrast coronagraphy since the planet-to-star brightness ratio is favorable, while the Strehl ratio is naturally higher. Methods. An annular groove phase mask (AGPM) vector vortex coronagraph optimized for the L' band, made from diamond subwavelength gratings was manufactured and qualified in the lab. The AGPM enables high contrast imaging at very small IWA, potentially being the key to unexplored discovery space. Results. Here we present the installation and successful on-sky tests of an L'-band AGPM coronagraph on NACO. Using angular differential imaging, which is well suited to the rotational symmetry of the AGPM, we demonstrated a ΔL' > 7.5 mag contrast from an IWA ~ 0".09 onwards, during average seeing conditions, and for total integration times of a few hundred seconds.

Polarized Neutron Laue Diffraction on a Crystal Containing Dynamically Polarized Proton Spins

We report on a polarized-neutron Laue diffraction experiment on a single crystal of neodynium doped lanthanum magnesium nitrate hydrate containing polarized proton spins. By using dynamic nuclear polarization to polarize the proton spins, we demonstrate that the intensities of the Bragg peaks can be enhanced or diminished significantly, whilst the incoherent background, due to proton spin disorder, is reduced. It follows that the method offers unique possibilities to tune continuously the contrast of the Bragg reflections and thereby represents a new tool for increasing substantially the signal-to-noise ratio in neutron diffraction patterns of hydrogenous matter.

Compton Scattering from the Deuteron and Extracted Neutron Polarizabilities

Differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the deuteron were measured at MAX-lab for incident photon energies of 55 MeV and 66 MeV at nominal laboratory angles of $45^\circ$, $125^\circ$, and $135^\circ$. Tagged photons were scattered from liquid deuterium and detected in three NaI spectrometers. By comparing the data with theoretical calculations in the framework of a one-boson-exchange potential model, the sum and difference of the isospin-averaged nucleon polarizabilities, $α_N + β_N = 17.4 \pm 3.7$ and $α_N - β_N = 6.4 \pm 2.4$ (in units of $10^{-4}$ fm$^3$), have been determined. By combining the latter with the global-averaged value for $α_p - β_p$ and using the predictions of the Baldin sum rule for the sum of the nucleon polarizabilities, we have obtained values for the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities of $α_n= 8.8 \pm 2.4$(total) $\pm 3.0$(model) and $β_n = 6.5 \mp 2.4$(total) $\mp 3.0$(model), respectively.
