Lyapunov exponents for expansive homeomorphisms

Let (M,d) be a compact metric space and f:M --> M an expansive homeomorphism. We define Lyapunov exponents L(f,m)_{max} and l(f,mu)_{min} for an f-invariant measure m. When L(f,m)_{max} > 0 and l(f,mu)_{min} < 0 can be interpreted as a weak form of hyperbolicity for f. We prove that if M is a Peano space then there is g>0 such that L(f,m)_{max} > g and l(f,m)_{min}< - g. We also show that the hypothesis that M is a Peano space is necessary to obtain the maximal Lyapunov exponent positive and the minimal Lyapunov exponent negative. Moreover we define Lyapunov exponents for K, a compact f-invariant subset of M and prove that if the maximal Lyapunov exponent of K is negative then K is an attractor. When f is a diffeomorphism on a compact manifold, these Lyapunov exponents coincide with the usual ones.

Multidimensional Rovella-like attractors

We present a multidimensional flow exhibiting a Rovella-like attractor: a transitive invariant set with a non-Lorenz-like singularity accumulated by regular orbits and a multidimensional non-uniformly expanding invariant direction. Moreover, this attractor has a physical measure with full support but persists along certain0909.1033 submanifolds of the space of vector fields. As in the 3-dimensional Rovella-like attractor, this example is not robust. The construction introduces a class of multidimensional dynamics, whose suspension provides the Rovella-like attractor, which are partially hyperbolic, and whose quotient over stable leaves is a multidimensional endomorphism to which Benedicks-Carleson type arguments are applied to prove non-uniform expansion.

Robust entropy expansiveness implies generic domination

Let $f: M \to M$ be a $C^r$-diffeomorphism, $r\geq 1$, defined on a compact boundaryless $d$-dimensional manifold $M$, $d\geq 2$, and let $H(p)$ be the homoclinic class associated to the hyperbolic periodic point $p$. We prove that if there exists a $C^1$ neighborhood $\mathcal{U}$ of $f$ such that for every $g\in {\mathcal U}$ the continuation $H(p_g)$ of $H(p)$ is entropy-expansive then there is a $Df$-invariant dominated splitting for $H(p)$ of the form $E\oplus F_1\oplus... \oplus F_c\oplus G$ where $E$ is contracting, $G$ is expanding and all $F_j$ are one dimensional and not hyperbolic.
