The CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs: Two Saturn-mass planets orbiting active stars

The CARMENES radial-velocity survey is currently searching for planets in a sample of 387 M dwarfs. Here we report on two Saturn-mass planets orbiting TYC 2187-512-1 ($M_\star = 0.50 M_\odot$) and TZ Ari ($M_\star = 0.15 M_\odot$), respectively. We obtained supplementary photometric time series, which we use along with spectroscopic information to determine the rotation periods of the two stars. In both cases, the radial velocities also show strong modulations at the respective rotation period. We thus modeled the radial velocities as a Keplerian orbit plus a Gaussian process representing the stellar variability. TYC 2187-512-1 is found to harbor a planet with a minimum mass of 0.33 $M_{\rm Jup}$ in a near-circular 692-day orbit. The companion of TZ Ari has a minimum mass of 0.21 $M_{\rm Jup}$, orbital period of 771 d, and orbital eccentricity of 0.46. We provide an overview of all known giant planets in the CARMENES sample, from which we infer an occurrence rate of giant planets orbiting M dwarfs with periods up to 2 years in the range between 2% to 6%. TZ Ari b is only the second giant planet discovered orbiting a host with mass less than 0.3 $M_\odot$. These objects occupy an extreme location in the planet mass versus host mass plane. It is difficult to explain their formation in core-accretion scenarios, so they may possibly have been formed through a disk fragmentation process.

A multiple planet system of super-Earths orbiting the brightest red dwarf star GJ887

The nearest exoplanets to the Sun are our best possibilities for detailed characterization. We report the discovery of a compact multi-planet system of super-Earths orbiting the nearby red dwarf GJ 887, using radial velocity measurements. The planets have orbital periods of 9.3 and 21.8~days. Assuming an Earth-like albedo, the equilibrium temperature of the 21.8 day planet is approx 350 K; which is interior, but close to the inner edge, of the liquid-water habitable zone. We also detect a further unconfirmed signal with a period of 50 days which could correspond to a third super-Earth in a more temperate orbit. GJ 887 is an unusually magnetically quiet red dwarf with a photometric variability below 500 parts-per-million, making its planets amenable to phase-resolved photometric characterization.

Multi-site, multi-year monitoring of the oscillating Algol-type eclipsing binary CT Her

We present the results of a multi-site photometric campaign carried out in 2004-2008 for the Algol-type eclipsing binary system CT Her, the primary component of which shows Delta Scuti-type oscillations. Our data consist of differential light curves collected in the filters B and V which have been analysed using the method of Wilson-Devinney (PHOEBE). After identification of an adequate binary model and removal of the best-matching light curve solution, we performed a Fourier analysis of the residual B and V light curves to investigate the pulsational behaviour. We confirm the presence of rapid pulsations with a main period of 27.2 min. Up to eight significant frequencies with semi-amplitudes in the range 3 to 1 mmag were detected, all of which surprisingly lie in the frequency range 43.5-53.5 c\d. This result is independent from the choice of the primary's effective temperature (8200 or 8700 K) since the light curve models for the binary are very similar in both cases. This is yet another case of a complex frequency spectrum observed for an accreting Delta Scuti-type star (after Y Cam). In addition, we demonstrate that the amplitudes of several of these pulsation frequencies show evidence of variability on time scales as short as 1-2 years, perhaps even less. Moreover, our analysis takes into account some recently acquired spectra, from which we obtained the corresponding radial velocities for the years 2007-2009. Investigation of the O-C diagram shows that further monitoring of the epochs of eclipse minima of CT Her will cast a new light on the evolution of its orbital period.

Multisite photometry of the pulsating Herbig Ae star V346 Ori

CONTEXT: The study of pulsation in Pre--Main--Sequence intermediate-mass stars represents an important tool for deriving information on fundamental stellar parameters and internal structure, as well as for testing current theoretical models. Interest in this class of variable stars has significantly increased during the last decade and about 30 members are presently known in the literature. AIMS: We have constructed the frequency spectrum of the oscillations in V346 Ori. We apply asteroseismic tools to these data to estimate the intrinsic parameters (mass, luminosity, effective temperature) of V346 Ori and to obtain information on its internal structure. METHODS: CCD time series photometry in the Johnson V filter has been obtained for a total of 145.7 h of observations distributed over 36 nights. The resulting light curves have been subjected to a detailed frequency analysis using updated numerical techniques. Photometric and spectroscopic data have also been acquired to determine reliable estimates of the stellar properties. RESULTS: We have identified 13 oscillation frequencies, 6 of which with higher significance. These have been compared with the predictions of non-radial adiabatic models. The resulting best fit model has a mass of 2.1$\pm$0.2 $M_{\odot}$, luminosity $\log{L/L_{\odot}}=1.37^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$, and effective temperature 7300$\pm$200 K. These values are marginally consistent with the association of V346 Ori to Orion OB1a. Alternatively, V346 Ori could be placed at a slightly larger distance than previously estimated.

Discovery and application of Frequency Ratio Method to the new multiperiodic gamma Dor star HD 218427

gamma Dor-type oscillations have been discovered in the star HD218427 through simultaneous uvby photometric observations carried out in the year 2003. A few Hbeta-Crawford measurements were also collected for calibration purposes which place this star well-located inside the gamma Dor instability region. Deficiency in metal content, similar to other well-defined gamma Dor stars, is found in HD218427 and the possibility of a lambda Boo nature is discussed. Frequency analysis was carried out for different filters, the combined "vby" filter was also used and five frequencies were found as significant with periods ranging between 0.3 and 0.8 days. The recently developed Frequency Ratio Method is used in order to perform an identification of the excited modes. The results are consistent with an l=2 identification for all the modes and high radial quantum numbers (n~40) for the three main observed periodicities. The possibility of multiplet structures is also discussed. However, no consistency is found when the Time-Dependent Convection treatment is used for modes discrimination. The disagreement can be due to the large rotation velocity taking place in HD218427 and, consequently, the significant coupling between the modes.
