Topology invisible to eigenvalues in obstructed atomic insulators

We consider the extent to which symmetry eigenvalues reveal the topological character of bands. Specifically, we compare distinct atomic limit phases (band representations) that share the same irreducible representations (irreps) at all points in the Brillouin zone and, therefore, appear equivalent in a classification based on eigenvalues. We derive examples where such "irrep-equivalent" phases can be distinguished by a quantized Berry phase or generalization thereof. These examples constitute a generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain: neither phase is topological, in the sense that localized Wannier functions exist, yet there is a topological obstruction between them. We refer to two phases as "Berry obstructed atomic limits" if they have the same irreps, but differ by Berry phases. This is a distinct notion from eigenvalue obstructed atomic limits, which differ in their symmetry irreps at some point in the Brillouin zone. We compute exhaustive lists of elementary band representations that are irrep-equivalent, in all space groups, with and without time-reversal symmetry and spin-orbit coupling, and use group theory to derive a set of necessary conditions for irrep-equivalence. Finally, we conjecture, and in some cases prove, that irrep-equivalent elementary band representations that are not equivalent can be distinguished by a topological invariant.

Magnetic superspace groups and symmetry constraints in incommensurate magnetic phases

Although superspace formalism has become the standard approach for the analysis of structurally modulated crystals, it has remained during the last thirty years almost unexplored as a practical tool to deal with magnetic incommensurate structures. This situation has recently changed with the development of new computer tools for magnetic phases based on this formalism. In this context we show here that, as in the case of nonmagnetic incommensurate systems, the concept of superspace symmetry provides a simple, efficient and systematic way to characterize the symmetry and rationalize the structural and physical properties of incommensurate magnetic materials. The method introduces significant advantages over the most commonly employed method of representation analysis for the description of the magnetic structure of a crystal. But, more importantly, in contrast with that method, it consistently yields and classifies all degrees of freedom of the system. The knowledge of the superspace group of an incommensurate magnetic material allows to predict its crystal tensor properties and to rationalize its phase diagram, previous to any appeal to microscopic models or mechanisms. This is especially relevant when the properties of incommensurate multiferroics are being studied. We present first a summary of the superspace method under a very practical viewpoint particularized to magnetic modulations. Its relation with the usual representation analysis is then analyzed in detail, with the derivation of important general rules for magnetic modulations with a single propagation vector. The power and efficiency of the formalism is illustrated with various selected examples, including some multiferroic materials.

Short-Range B-site Ordering in Inverse Spinel Ferrite NiFe2O4

The Raman spectra of single crystals of NiFe2O4 were studied in various scattering configurations in close comparison with the corresponding spectra of Ni0.7Zn0.3Fe2O4 and Fe3O4. The number of experimentally observed Raman modes exceeds significantly that expected for a normal spinel structure and the polarization properties of most of the Raman lines provide evidence for a microscopic symmetry lower than that given by the Fd-3m space group. We argue that the experimental results can be explained by considering the short range 1:1 ordering of Ni2+ and Fe3+ at the B-sites of inverse spinel structure, most probably of tetragonal P4_122/P4_322 symmetry.
