Going chiral: overlap versus twisted mass fermions

We compare the behavior of overlap fermions, which are chirally invariant, and of Wilson twisted mass fermions at full twist in the approach to the chiral limit. Our quenched simulations reveal that with both formulations of lattice fermions pion masses of O(250 MeV) can be reached in practical applications. Our comparison is done at a fixed value of the lattice spacing a=0.123 fm. A number of quantities are measured such as hadron masses, pseudoscalar decay constants and quark masses obtained from Ward identities. We also determine the axial vector renormalization constants in the case of overlap fermions.

String effects in the 3d gauge Ising model

We compare the predictions of the effective string description of confinement with a set of Montecarlo data for the 3d gauge Ising model at finite temperature. Thanks to a new algorithm which makes use of the dual symmetry of the model we can reach very high precisions even for large quark-antiquark distances. We are thus able to explore the large R regime of the effective string. We find that for large enough distances and low enough temperature the data are well described by a pure bosonic string. As the temperature increases higher order corrections become important and cannot be neglected even at large distances. These higher order corrections seem to be well described by the Nambu-Goto action truncated at the first perturbative order.

Finite temperature corrections in 2d integrable models

We study the finite size corrections for the magnetization and the internal energy of the 2d Ising model in a magnetic field by using transfer matrix techniques. We compare these corrections with the functional form recently proposed by Delfino and LeClair-Mussardo for the finite temperature behaviour of one-point functions in integrable 2d quantum field theories. We find a perfect agreement between theoretical expectations and numerical results. Assuming the proposed functional form as an input in our analysis we obtain a relevant improvement in the precision of the continuum limit estimates of both quantities.

Bound states in the 3d Ising model and implications for QCD at finite temperature and density

We study the spectrum of bound states of the three dimensional Ising model in the (h,beta) plane near the critical point. We show the existence of an unbinding line, defined as the boundary of the region where bound states exist. Numerical evidence suggests that this line coincides with the beta=beta_c axis. When the 3D Ising model is considered as an effective description of hot QCD at finite density, we conjecture the correspondence between the unbinding line and the line that separates the quark-gluon plasma phase from the superconducting phase. The bound states of the Ising model are conjectured to correspond to the diquarks of the latter phase of QCD.

Speeding up the Hybrid-Monte-Carlo algorithm for dynamical fermions

We propose a modification of the Hybrid-Monte-Carlo algorithm that allows for a larger step-size of the integration scheme at constant acceptance rate. The key ingredient is the splitting of the pseudo-fermion action into two parts. We test our proposal at the example of the two-dimensional lattice Schwinger model and four-dimensional lattice QCD with two degenerate flavours of Wilson- fermions.

Critical exponents and equation of state of three-dimensional spin models

Three-dimensional spin models of the Ising and XY universality classes are studied by a combination of high-temperature expansions and Monte Carlo simulations. Critical exponents are determined to very high precision. Scaling amplitude ratios are computed via the critical equation of state. Our results are compared with other theoretical computations and with experiments, with special emphasis on the lambda transition of 4He.

The critical equation of state of the 2D Ising model

We compute the 2n-point coupling constants in the high-temperature phase of the 2d Ising model by using transfer-matrix techniques. This provides the first few terms of the expansion of the effective potential (Helmholtz free energy) and of the equation of state in terms of the renormalized magnetization. By means of a suitable parametric representation, we determine an analytic extension of these expansions, providing the equation of state in the whole critical region in the t,h plane.

Non-perturbative states in the three-dimensional phi^4 theory

We study the spectrum of massive excitations of the three-dimensional phi^4 and Ising models, in the broken-symmetry phase. Using a variational method, we show that the spectrum contains all the 0+ states that one expects from duality with the glueball spectrum of the Z(2) gauge model. From the point of view of continuum phi^4 theory, we show that at least one of the states we find has a non-perturbative origin.

The Interface Tension of the 3-Dimensional Ising Model in the Scaling Region

Using the Monte Carlo method, we determine the free energy of the interface of the 3D Ising model in the scaling region. By integrating the interface energies over the inverse temperature $β$, we obtain estimates for the free energies of interfaces with cross sections up to 96 by 96, and for a range $0.223 \leq β\leq 0.23$. Our data yield a precise estimation of the interface tensions $σ$. We determine the amplitude $σ_0$ in the critical law $σ\sim σ_0 t^μ$ and estimate the combination $σξ^2$ which yields the universal constant $R_{-}$ in the critical limit.

Iterating Block Spin Transformations of the O(3) Non-Linear Sigma-Model

We study the iteration of block spin transformations in the O(3) symmetric non-linear sigma-model on a two-dimensional square lattice with help of the Monte Carlo method. In contrast to the classical Monte Carlo Renormalization Group approach, we do attempt to explicitly compute the block spin effective actions. Using two different methods for the determination of effective couplings, we study the renormalization group flow for various parametrization and truncation schemes. The largest ansatz for the effective action contains thirteen coupling constants. Actions on the renormalized trajectory should describe theories with no lattice artefacts, even at small correlation length. However, tests with the step scaling function of Luescher et al. reveal that our truncated effective actions show sizable scaling violations indicating that the ansaetze are still too small.
