A Novel Fuzzy Approximate Reasoning Method Based on Extended Distance Measure in SISO Fuzzy System

This paper presents an original method of fuzzy approximate reasoning that can open a new direction of research in the uncertainty inference of Artificial Intelligence(AI) and Computational Intelligence(CI). Fuzzy modus ponens (FMP) and fuzzy modus tollens(FMT) are two fundamental and basic models of general fuzzy approximate reasoning in various fuzzy systems. And the reductive property is one of the essential and important properties in the approximate reasoning theory and it is a lot of applications. This paper suggests a kind of extended distance measure (EDM) based approximate reasoning method in the single input single output(SISO) fuzzy system with discrete fuzzy set vectors of different dimensions. The EDM based fuzzy approximate reasoning method is consists of two part, i.e., FMP-EDM and FMT-EDM. The distance measure based fuzzy reasoning method that the dimension of the antecedent discrete fuzzy set is equal to one of the consequent discrete fuzzy set has already solved in other paper. In this paper discrete fuzzy set vectors of different dimensions mean that the dimension of the antecedent discrete fuzzy set differs from one of the consequent discrete fuzzy set in the SISO fuzzy system. That is, this paper is based on EDM. The experimental results highlight that the proposed approximate reasoning method is comparatively clear and effective with respect to the reductive property, and in accordance with human thinking than existing fuzzy reasoning methods.

Algorithms and parameters for improved accuracy in physics data libraries

Recent efforts for the improvement of the accuracy of physics data libraries used in particle transport are summarized. Results are reported about a large scale validation analysis of atomic parameters used by major Monte Carlo systems (Geant4, EGS, MCNP, Penelope etc.); their contribution to the accuracy of simulation observables is documented. The results of this study motivated the development of a new atomic data management software package, which optimizes the provision of state-of-the-art atomic parameters to physics models. The effect of atomic parameters on the simulation of radioactive decay is illustrated. Ideas and methods to deal with physics models applicable to different energy ranges in the production of data libraries, rather than at runtime, are discussed.

Refactoring, reengineering and evolution: paths to Geant4 uncertainty quantification and performance improvement

Ongoing investigations for the improvement of Geant4 accuracy and computational performance resulting by refactoring and reengineering parts of the code are discussed. Issues in refactoring that are specific to the domain of physics simulation are identified and their impact is elucidated. Preliminary quantitative results are reported.

New Physics Data Libraries for Monte Carlo Transport

The role of data libraries as a collaborative tool across Monte Carlo codes is discussed. Some new contributions in this domain are presented; they concern a data library of proton and alpha ionization cross sections, the development in progress of a data library of electron ionization cross sections and proposed improvements to the EADL (Evaluated Atomic Data Library), the latter resulting from an extensive data validation process.

Observation of magneto-phonon resonance of Dirac fermions in graphite

Coherent coupling of Dirac fermion magneto-excitons with an optical phonon is observed in graphite as marked magnetic-field dependent splittings and anti-crossing behavior of the two coupled modes. The sharp magneto-phonon resonance occurs in regions of the graphite sample with properties of superior single-layer graphene having enhanced lifetimes of Dirac fermions. The greatly reduced carrier broadening to values below the graphene electron-phonon coupling constant explains the appearance of sharp resonances that reveal a fundamental interaction of Dirac fermions.

The HST Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale XIV. The Cepheids in NGC 1365

We report the detection of Cepheid variable stars in the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365, located in the Fornax cluster, using the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2. Twelve V (F555W) and four I (F814W) epochs of observation were obtained. The two photometry packages, ALLFRAME and DoPHOT, were separately used to obtain profile-fitting photometry of all the stars in the HST field. The search for Cepheid variable stars resulted in a sample of 52 variables, with periods between 14 and 60 days, in common with both datasets. ALLFRAME photometry and light curves of the Cepheids are presented. A subset of 34 Cepheids were selected on the basis of period, light curve shape, similar ALLFRAME and DoPHOT periods, color, and relative crowding, to fit the Cepheid period-luminosity relations in V and I for both ALLFRAME and DoPHOT. The measured distance modulus to NGC 1365 from the ALLFRAME photometry is 31.31 +/- 0.20 (random) +/- 0.18 (systematic) mag, corresponding to a distance of 18.3 +/- 1.7 (random) +/- 1.6 (systematic) Mpc. The reddening is measured to be E(V-I) = 0.16 +/- 0.08 mag. These values are in excellent agreement with those obtained using the DoPHOT photometry, namely a distance modulus of 31.26 +/- 0.10 mag, and a reddening of 0.15 +/- 0.10 mag (internal errors only).
