$^{139}$La NMR investigation of the interplay between the lattice, charge, and spin dynamics in charge ordered high $T_c$ cuprate La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$

We investigate the interplay between the lattice, charge, and spin dynamics in charge ordered high $T_c$ cuprate La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$ ($T_{c} =4$~K) based on the inverse Laplace transform (ILT) analysis of the $^{139}$La nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ (dubbed ILTT$_{1}$ analysis here after). A major thrust of the ILTT$_{1}$ analysis is that one can deduce the probability density function $P(1/T_1)$ of distributed $1/T_1$. We demonstrate that $1/T_{1}^{lm}$, defined as the log-mean (i.e. the center of gravity on a logarithmic scale) of $P(1/T_1)$, can be well approximated by $1/T_{1}^{str}$ deduced from the phenomenological stretched fit, however, $P(1/T_1)$ can provide much richer insight into how the lattice, charge, and spin fluctuations and their distribution develop near and below the long range charge order at $T_{charge} \sim 54$~K. Upon entering the charge ordered state, a divergent increase of $1/T_{1}^{lm}$ toward the spin ordering at $T_{spin}^{μSR} \simeq 35$~K is accompanied by an asymmetric broadening of $P(1/T_1)$. Even deep inside the charge ordered state, $1/T_{1}$ at a gradually diminishing fraction of $^{139}$La sites continues to slow down as temperature is lowered, as expected for canonical superconducting CuO$_2$ planes without enhanced spin fluctuations. The fraction of such canonical $^{139}$La sites almost disappears by $\simeq 40$~K. In contrast, nearly a half of the $^{139}$La sites in La$_{1.885}$Sr$_{0.115}$CuO$_{4}$ ($T_{charge} \simeq 80$~K) still exhibits the canonical behavior without enhanced spin fluctuations even near its $T_{c} = 31$~K. These contrasting behaviors explain why superconductivity in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$ is more strongly suppressed than in La$_{1.885}$Sr$_{0.115}$CuO$_{4}$ despite the lower onset temperature of the charge order.

Measurement of differential cross sections for $Σ^+p$ elastic scattering in the momentum range 0.44-0.80 GeV/c

We performed a novel $Σ^+ p$ scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering events were identified from $4.9 \times 10^7$ tagged $Σ^+$ particles in the $Σ^+$ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/$c$. The differential cross sections of the $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the $^3 S_1$ and $^1 P_1$ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the $^3 S_1$ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as $20^\circ<|δ_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ$. If the sign of $δ_{^3S_1}$ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

Precise measurement of differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction in momentum range 470-650 MeV/c

The differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction were measured accurately for the Σ- momentum (p_{Σ}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of Δcosθ = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions. The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cosθ < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<550 and 550<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<650, respectively. These results show a drastic improvement compared to past measurements of the hyperon-proton scattering experiments. They will play essential roles in updating the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Revisiting the $^{63}$Cu NMR signature of charge order in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$

We use single crystal $^{63}$Cu NMR techniques to revisit the early $^{63}$Cu NQR signature of charge order observed for La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$ ($T_{\text{c}} =4$~K) [A. W. Hunt et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 82}, 4300 (1999)]. We show that the growth of spin correlations is accelerated below $\sim 80$~K, where the inverse Laplace transform (ILT) T$_{1}$ analysis of the $^{139}$La NMR spin-lattice relaxation curve recently uncovered emergence of the slow components in the lattice and/or charge fluctuations [P. M. Singer et al., {\bf 101}, 174508 (2020)]. From the accurate measurements of the $^{63}$Cu NMR signal intensity, spin echo decay $M(2τ)$, spin-lattice relaxation rate $^{63}1/T_1$, and its density distribution function $P(^{63}1/T_{1})$, we also demonstrate that charge order at $T_{\text{charge}}\simeq 54$~K turns on strong enhancement of spin fluctuations {\it within charge ordered domains}, thereby making the CuO$_2$ planes extremely inhomogeneous. The charge ordered domains grow quickly below $T_{\text{charge}}$, and the volume fraction $F_{\text{CA}}$ of the canonical domains unaffected by charge order gradually diminishes by $\sim 35$~K. This finding agrees with our independent estimations of $F_{\text{CA}}$ based entirely on the $^{139}$La ILTT$_{1}$ analyses, but is in a stark contrast with much slower growth of charge ordered domains observed for La$_{1.885}$Sr$_{0.115}$CuO$_{4}$ from its $T_{\text{charge}}\simeq 80$~K to $T_{\text{c}}\simeq 30$~K.

Observation of Coulomb-assisted nuclear bound state of $Ξ^-$-$^{14}$N system

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a $Ξ^-$ absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-$Λ$ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as $Ξ^{-} + ^{14}$N$\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_Λ$Be + $^5_Λ$He. For the binding energy of the $Ξ^{-}$ hyperon in the $Ξ^-$-$^{14}$N system a value of $1.27 \pm 0.21$ MeV was deduced. The energy level of $Ξ^-$ is likely a nuclear $1p$ state which indicates a weak $ΞN$-$ΛΛ$ coupling.

Spin excitations coupled with lattice and charge dynamics in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$

Spin excitations of layered copper oxide show various characteristic features, depending on the carrier concentration. In this study, we conducted inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ (LSCO), with $x$ = 0, 0.075, 0.18, and 0.30 and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_4$ (LSNO) with 1/3, to clarify the origin of the intensity enhancement in the excitation spectrum of LSCO at the energy ($ω$) of 16--19 meV [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 91}, 224404 (2015), {\it ibid}. {\bf 93}, 094416 (2016)]. We confirmed the presence of a peak-structure in the $ω$-dependence of the local spin susceptibility $χ''(ω)$ of superconducting (SC) LSCO with a peak energy of 16--19 meV, where the spin excitations intersect optical phonon branches. A comparable peak-structure is not observed in the insulating La$_2$CuO$_4$, LSNO, and heavily overdoped LSCO with $x$ = 0.30. A dome-shaped $x$-dependence of the integrated intensity around the peak energies is revealed for SC phase by summarizing the present and previously reported results. Furthermore, our phonon calculation on LCO shows the existence of two optical branches at $\sim$19 meV that could stabilize stripe-alignment of carriers due to out-of-plane vibrations of Cu or O of the CuO$_2$ planes. These results indicate the interplay among spin, charge, and lattice dynamics and suggest that the intensity enhancement is associated with their composite excitations.

Distribution of the magnetic environment in charge ordered La$_{1.885}$Sr$_{0.115}$CuO$_{4}$

We report the inverse Laplace transform (ILT) analysis of the $^{139}$La nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ in charge ordered La$_{1.885}$Sr$_{0.115}$CuO$_4$ ($T_{charge} \sim 80$K, $T_{c} \simeq T_{spin}^{neutron}=30$K), and shed new light on its magnetic inhomogeneity. We deduce the probability density function $P(1/T_{1})$ of the distributed $1/T_1$ (i.e. the histogram of distributed $1/T_1$) by taking the inverse Laplace transform of the experimentally observed nuclear magnetization recovery curve $M(t)$. We demonstrate that spin freezing sets in in some domains precisely below the onset of charge order at $T_{charge}$, but their volume fraction grows only gradually toward $T_{c}$. Nearly a half of the sample volume exhibits properties expected for canonical high $T_c$ cuprates without charge order even near $T_c$. Our findings explain why charge order does not suppress $T_c$ of La$_{1.885}$Sr$_{0.115}$CuO$_4$ as significantly as in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$.

Observation of the Magnon Polarization

We measure the mode-resolved direction of the precessional motion of the magnetic order, i.e., magnon polarization, via the chiral term of inelastic polarized neutron scattering spectra. The magnon polarisation is important in spintronics, affecting thermodynamic properties such as the magnitude and sign of the spin Seebeck effect. The observation of both signs of magnon polarization in Y3Fe5O12 also gives direct proof of its ferrimagnetic nature. The experiments agree very well with atomistic simulations of the scattering cross section.

Passivity-Based Control of Human-Robotic Networks with Inter-Robot Communication Delays and Experimental Verification

In this paper, we present experimental studies on a cooperative control system for human-robotic networks with inter-robot communication delays. We first design a cooperative controller to be implemented on each robot so that their motion are synchronized to a reference motion desired by a human operator, and then point out that each robot motion ensures passivity. Inter-robot communication channels are then designed via so-called scattering transformation which is a technique to passify the delayed channel. The resulting robotic network is then connected with human operator based on passivity theory. In order to demonstrate the present control architecture, we build an experimental testbed consisting of multiple robots and a tablet. In particular, we analyze the effects of the communication delays on the human operator's behavior.

High Resolution Spectroscopic Study of $^{10}_Λ$Be

Spectroscopy of a $^{10}_Λ$Be hypernucleus was carried out at JLab Hall C using the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction. A new magnetic spectrometer system (SPL+HES+HKS), specifically designed for high resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy, was used to obtain an energy spectrum with a resolution of 0.78 MeV (FWHM). The well-calibrated spectrometer system of the present experiment using the $p(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})Λ,Σ^{0}$ reactions allowed us to determine the energy levels, and the binding energy of the ground state peak (mixture of 1$^{-}$ and 2$^{-}$ states) was obtained to be B$_Λ$=8.55$\pm$0.07(stat.)$\pm$0.11(sys.) MeV. The result indicates that the ground state energy is shallower than that of an emulsion study by about 0.5 MeV which provides valuable experimental information on charge symmetry breaking effect in the $ΛN$ interaction.

Spectroscopy of the neutron-rich hypernucleus $^{7}_Λ$He from electron scattering

The missing mass spectroscopy of the $^{7}_Λ$He hypernucleus was performed, using the $^{7}$Li$(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})^{7}_Λ$He reaction at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Hall C. The $Λ$ binding energy of the ground state (1/2$^{+}$) was determined with a smaller error than that of the previous measurement, being $B_Λ$ = 5.55 $\pm$ 0.10(stat.) $\pm$ 0.11(sys.) MeV. The experiment also provided new insight into charge symmetry breaking in p-shell hypernuclear systems. Finally, a peak at $B_Λ$ = 3.65 $\pm$ 0.20(stat.) $\pm$ 0.11(sys.) MeV was observed and assigned as a mixture of 3/2$^{+}$ and 5/2$^{+}$ states, confirming the "gluelike" behavior of $Λ$, which makes an unstable state in $^{6}$He stable against neutron emission.

High-energy magnetic excitations in overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ studied by neutron and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

We have performed neutron inelastic scattering and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu-$L_3$ edge to study high-energy magnetic excitations at energy transfers of more than 100 meV for overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with $x=0.25$ ($T_c=15$ K) and $x=0.30$ (non-superconducting) using identical single crystal samples for the two techniques. From constant-energy slices of neutron scattering cross-sections, we have identified magnetic excitations up to ~250 meV for $x=0.25$. Although the width in the momentum direction is large, the peak positions along the (pi, pi) direction agree with the dispersion relation of the spin-wave in the non-doped La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ (LCO), which is consistent with the previous RIXS results of cuprate superconductors. Using RIXS at the Cu-$L_3$ edge, we have measured the dispersion relations of the so-called paramagnon mode along both (pi, pi) and (pi, 0) directions. Although in both directions the neutron and RIXS data connect with each other and the paramagnon along (pi, 0) agrees well with the LCO spin-wave dispersion, the paramagnon in the (pi, pi) direction probed by RIXS appears to be less dispersive and the excitation energy is lower than the spin-wave of LCO near (pi/2, pi/2). Thus, our results indicate consistency between neutron inelastic scattering and RIXS, and elucidate the entire magnetic excitation in the (pi, pi) direction by the complementary use of two probes. The polarization dependence of the RIXS profiles indicates that appreciable charge excitations exist in the same energy range of magnetic excitations, reflecting the itinerant character of the overdoped sample. A possible anisotropy in the charge excitation intensity might explain the apparent differences in the paramagnon dispersion in the (pi, pi) direction as detected by the X-ray scattering.

Observation of Spin-Dependent Charge Symmetry Breaking in $ΛN$ Interaction: Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy of $^4_{Λ}$He

The energy spacing between the ground-state spin doublet of $^4_Λ$He(1$^+$,0$^+$) was determined to be $1406 \pm 2 \pm 2$ keV, by measuring $γ$ rays for the $1^+ \to 0^+$ transition with a high efficiency germanium detector array in coincidence with the $^4$He$(K^-,π^-)$ $^4_Λ$He reaction at J-PARC. In comparison to the corresponding energy spacing in the mirror hypernucleus $^4_Λ$H, the present result clearly indicates the existence of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in $ΛN$ interaction. It is also found that the CSB effect is large in the $0^+$ ground state but is by one order of magnitude smaller in the $1^+$ excited state, demonstrating that the $ΛN$ CSB interaction has spin dependence.

Single-crystal growth of underdoped Bi-2223

To investigate the origin of the enhanced Tc ({\approx} 110 K) of the trilayer cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ (Bi-2223), its underdoped single crystals are a critical requirement. Here, we demonstrate the first successful in-plane resistivity measurements of heavily underdoped Bi-2223 (zero-resistivity temperatures {\approx} 20~35 K). Detailed crystal growth methods, the annealing process, as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic susceptibility measurement results are also reported.

Thermal Conductivity in the Frustrated Two-Leg Spin-Ladder System BiCu2PO6

We have measured temperature and magnetic-field dependences of the thermal conductivity of single crystals of the frustrated two-leg spin-ladder system BiCu2PO6 in magnetic fields up to 14 T. It has been found that the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity along every principal crystallographic axis shows two peaks in zero field but that the magnitude of the thermal conductivity along the b-axis parallel to spin ladders, $κ$b, is significantly larger than those of the thermal conductivity along the a-axis, $κ$a, and along the c-axis, $κ$c, at high temperatures above 7 K. These results suggest that the thermal conductivity due to spins probably exists only in $κ$b. Furthermore, it has been found that both magnetic-field dependences of $κ$a and $κ$b at 3 K show kinks at ~ 7 T and ~ 10 T, where the spin state may change.

Bulk charge stripe order competing with superconductivity in La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.12)

We present a volume-sensitive high-energy x-ray diffraction study of the underdoped cuprate high temperature superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 (x = 0.12, Tc=27 K) in applied magnetic field. Bulk short-range charge stripe order with propagation vector q_ch = (0.231, 0, 0.5) is demonstrated to exist below T_ch = 85(10) K and shown to compete with superconductivity. We argue that bulk charge ordering arises from fluctuating stripes that become pinned near boundaries between orthorhombic twin domains.

Evidence for a charge collective mode associated with superconductivity in copper oxides from neutron and x-ray scattering measurements of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

In superconducting copper oxides some Cu-O bond-stretching phonons around 70meV show anomalous giant softening and broadening of electronic origin and electronic dispersions have large renormalization kinks near the same energy. These observations suggest that phonon broadening originates from quasiparticle excitations across the Fermi surface and the electronic dispersion kinks originate from coupling to anomalous phonons. We measured the phonon anomaly in underdoped (x=0.05) and overdoped (x=0.20,0.25) La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ by inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering with high resolution. Combining these and previously published data, we found that doping-dependence of the magnitude of the giant phonon anomaly is very different from that of the ARPES kink, i.e. the two phenomena are not connected. We show that these results provide indirect evidence that the phonon anomaly originates from novel collective charge excitations as opposed to interactions with electron-hole pairs. Their amplitude follows the superconducting dome so these charge modes may be important for superconductivity.

High-energy spin and charge excitations in electron-doped copper oxide superconductors

The evolution of electronic (spin and charge) excitations upon carrier doping is an extremely important issue in superconducting layered cuprates and the knowledge of its asymmetry between electron- and hole-dopings is still fragmentary. Here we combine x-ray and neutron inelastic scattering measurements to track the doping dependence of both spin and charge excitations in electron-doped materials. Copper L3 resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra show that magnetic excitations shift to higher energy upon doping. Their dispersion becomes steeper near the magnetic zone center and deeply mix with charge excitations, indicating that electrons acquire a highly itinerant character in the doped metallic state. Moreover, above the magnetic excitations, an additional dispersing feature is observed near the Γ-point, and we ascribe it to particle-hole charge excitations. These properties are in stark contrast with the more localized spin-excitations (paramagnons) recently observed in hole-doped compounds even at high doping-levels.

Itinerant effects and enhanced magnetic interactions in Bi-based multilayer cuprates

The cuprate high temperature superconductors exhibit a pronounced trend in which the superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\rm c}$, increases with the number of CuO$_2$ planes, $n$, in the crystal structure. We compare the magnetic excitation spectrum of Bi$_{2+x}$Sr$_{2-x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi-2201) and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10 + δ}$ (Bi-2223), with $n=1$ and $n=3$ respectively, using Cu $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Near the anti-nodal zone boundary we find the paramagnon energy in Bi-2223 is substantially higher than that in Bi-2201, indicating that multilayer cuprates host stronger effective magnetic exchange interactions, providing a possible explanation for the $T_{\rm c}$ vs.\ $n$ scaling. In contrast, the nodal direction exhibits very strongly damped, almost non-dispersive excitations. We argue that this implies that the magnetism in the doped cuprates is partially itinerant in nature.

Broken relationship between superconducting pairing interaction and electronic dispersion kinks in LSCO

Electronic band dispersions in copper oxide superconductors have kinks around 70 meV that are typically attributed to coupling of electrons to a bosonic mode. We performed angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on overdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors to test the relationship between the superconducting transition temperature and electron-bosonic mode coupling. Remarkably, the kinks remain strong in the heavily overdoped region of the doping phase diagram of LSCO, even when the superconductivity completely disappears. This unexpected observation is incompatible with the conventional picture of superconductivity mediated by the sharp bosonic modes that are responsible for the kink. Therefore, the pairing likely originates from something else, such as from interactions with a very broad electronic spectrum or from an unconventional mechanism without pairing glue.

Energy-dependent crossover from anisotropic to isotropic magnetic dispersion in lightly-doped La1.96Sr0.04CuO4

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed on lightly-doped La$_{1.96}$Sr$_{0.04}$CuO$_{4}$, which shows diagonal incommensurate spin correlations at low temperatures. We previously reported that this crystal, with a single orthorhombic domain, exhibits the "hourglass" dispersion at low energies [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 197001 (2008)]. In this paper, we investigate in detail the energy evolution of the magnetic excitations up to 65 meV. It is found that the anisotropic excitations at low energies, dispersing only along the spin modulation direction, crossover to an isotropic, conical dispersion that resembles spin waves in the parent compound La$_2$CuO$_{4}$. The change from two-fold to full symmetry on crossing the waist of the hourglass reproduces behavior first identified in studies of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. We discuss the significance of these results.

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering study of intra-band charge excitations in hole-doped high-Tc cuprates

We have performed resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) near the Cu-K edge on cuprate superconductors La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4), La(2-x)Sr(x)Cu(1-y)Fe(y)O(4) and Bi(1.76)Pb(0.35)Sr(1.89)CuO(6+d), covering underdoped to heavily overdoped regime and focusing on charge excitations inside the charge-transfer gap. RIXS measurements of the 214 systems with Ei = 8.993 keV have revealed that the RIXS intensity at 1 eV energy transfer has a minimum at (0,0) and maxima at (0.4pi, 0) and $(0, 0.4pi) for all doping points regardless of the stripe ordered state, suggesting that the corresponding structure is not directly related to stripe order. Measurements with Ei = 9.003 keV on metallic La(1.7)Sr(0.3)CuO(4) and Bi(1.76)Pb(0.35)Sr(1.89)CuO(6+d) exhibit a dispersive intra-band excitation below 4 eV, similar to that observed in the electron-doped Nd(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4). This is the first observation of a dispersive intra-band excitation in a hole doped system, evidencing that both electron and hole doped systems have a similar dynamical charge correlation function.

Bulk Fermi surface and momentum density in heavily doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ using high resolution Compton scattering and positron annihilation spectroscopies

We have observed the bulk Fermi surface (FS) in an overdoped ($x$=0.3) single crystal of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ by using Compton scattering. A two-dimensional (2D) momentum density reconstruction from measured Compton profiles yields a clear FS signature in the third Brillouin zone along [100]. The quantitative agreement between density functional theory (DFT) calculations and momentum density experiment suggests that Fermi-liquid physics is restored in the overdoped regime. In particular the predicted FS topology is found to be in good accord with the corresponding experimental data. We find similar quantitative agreement between the measured 2D angular correlation of positron annihilation radiation (2D-ACAR) spectra and the DFT based computations. However, 2D-ACAR does not give such a clear signature of the FS in the extended momentum space in either the theory or the experiment.

Modified Cross-Correlation for Efficient White-Beam Inelastic Neutron Scattering Spectroscopy

We describe a method of white-beam inelastic neutron scattering for improved measurement efficiency. The method consists of matrix inversion and selective extraction. The former is to resolve each incident energy component from the white-beam data, and the latter eliminates contamination by elastic components, which produce strong backgrounds that otherwise obfuscate the inelastic scattering components. In this method, the optimal experimental condition to obtain high efficiency will strongly depend on the specific aim of the individual experiments.

Neutron Brillouin scattering with pulsed spallation neutron source - spin-wave excitations from ferromagnetic powder samples -

Neutron Brillouin scattering (NBS) method was developed using a pulsed spallation neutron source, and the feasibility of NBS was demonstrated by observing ferromagnetic spin waves in La$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$ and SrRuO$_3$ powders. Gapless spin-wave excitations were observed in La$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$, which were continuously extended to the lower scattering vector $Q$ from previous results using single crystals. The novel result is a well-defined quadratic $Q$ dependence in the spin-wave dispersion curve with a large energy gap in SrRuO$_3$ indicating robust spin-orbit coupling.

Spin-stripe density varies linearly with hole content in single-layer Bi2201 cuprate

We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the single-layer cuprate Bi2+xSr2-xCuO6+y (Bi2201) with x=0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5, a doping range that spans the spin-glass (SG) to superconducting (SC) phase boundary. The doping evolution of low energy spin fluctuations was found to be characterized by a change of incommensurate modulation wave vector from the tetragonal [110] to [100]/[010] directions, while maintaining a linear relation between the incommensurability and the hole concentration, delta p. In the SC regime, the spectral weight is strongly suppressed below 4 meV. Similarities and differences in the spin correlations between Bi2201 and the prototypical single-layer system La2-xSrxCuO4 are discussed.

Effects of charge inhomogeneities on elementary excitations in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

Purely local experimental probes of many copper oxide superconductors show that their electronic states are inhomogeneous in real space. For example, scanning tunneling spectroscopic (STS) imaging shows strong variations in real space, and according to nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies the charge distribution in the bulk varies on the nanoscale. However, the analysis of the experimental results utilizing spatially-averaged probes often ignores this fact. We have performed a detailed investigation of the doping-dependence of the energy and line width and position of the zone-boundary Cu-O bond-stretching vibration in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 by inelastic neutron scattering. Both our new results as well as previously reported angle-dependent momentum widths of the electronic spectral function detected by angle-resolved photoemission can be reproduced by including the same distribution of local environments extracted from the NQR analysis.

Hidden itinerant-spin phase in heavily-overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 revealed by dilute Fe doping: A combined neutron scattering and angle-resolved photoemission study

We demonstrated experimentally a direct way to probe a hidden propensity to the formation of spin density wave (SDW) in a non-magnetic metal with strong Fermi surface nesting. Substituting Fe for a tiny amount of Cu (1%) induced an incommensurate magnetic order below 20 K in heavily-overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO). Elastic neutron scattering suggested that this order cannot be ascribed to the localized spins on Cu or doped Fe. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), combined with numerical calculations, revealed a strong Fermi surface nesting inherent in the pristine LSCO that likely drives this order. The heavily-overdoped Fe-doped LSCO thus represents the first plausible example of the long-sought "itinerant-spin extreme" of cuprates, where the spins of itinerant doped holes define the magnetic ordering ground state. This finding complements the current picture of cuprate spin physics that highlights the predominant role of localized spins at lower dopings. The demonstrated set of methods could potentially apply to studying hidden density-wave instabilities of other "nested" materials on the verge of density wave ordering.

By performing time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on a large amount of single crystals of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we studied detailed structure of the imaginary part of the dynamic spin susceptibility over a wide range of phase space. In the normal state at T=5 K, strong incommensurate (IC) peaks were clearly observed at around $\mathbf{Q}_\text{c}=(0.3,0.3)$ up to at least $\hbarω=80$ meV. In addition, our data also show strong magnetic fluctuations that exist on the ridges connecting the IC peaks around the $(π,π)$ point rather than around the $Γ$ point. Our results are consistent with the semi-mean-field random phase approximation calculation for a two dimensional Fermi liquid with a characteristic energy of 5.0 meV. Furthermore, the IC fluctuations were observed even at room temperature.

Coupling of spin and orbital excitations in the iron-based superconductor FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5)

We present a combined analysis of neutron scattering and photoemission measurements on superconducting FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5). The low-energy magnetic excitations disperse only in the direction transverse to the characteristic wave vector (1/2,0,0), whereas the electronic Fermi surface near (1/2,0,0) appears to consist of four incommensurate pockets. While the spin resonance occurs at an incommensurate wave vector compatible with nesting, neither spin-wave nor Fermi-surface-nesting models can describe the magnetic dispersion. We propose that a coupling of spin and orbital correlations is key to explaining this behavior. If correct, it follows that these nematic fluctuations are involved in the resonance and could be relevant to the pairing mechanism.

Doping dependence of the $(π,π)$ shadow band in La-based cuprates studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The $(π,π)$ shadow band (SB) in La-based cuprate family (La214) was studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) over a wide doping range from $x=0.01$ to $x=0.25$. Unlike the well-studied case of the Bi-based cuprate family, an overall strong, monotonic doping dependence of the SB intensity at the Fermi level ($E_F$) was observed. In contrast to a previous report for the presence of the SB only close to $x=1/8$, we found it exists in a wide doping range, associated with a doping-independent $(π,π)$ wave vector but strongly doping-dependent intensity: It is the strongest at $x\sim 0.03$ and systematically diminishes as the doping increases until it becomes negligible in the overdoped regime. This SB with the observed doping dependence of intensity can in principle be caused by the antiferromagnetic fluctuations or a particular form of low-temperature orthorhombic lattice distortion known to persist up to $x\sim 0.21$ in the system, with both being weakened with increasing doping. However, a detailed binding energy dependent analysis of the SB at $x=0.07$ does not appear to support the former interpretation, leaving the latter as a more plausible candidate, despite a challenge in quantitatively linking the doping dependences of the SB intensity and the magnitude of the lattice distortion. Our finding highlights the necessity of a careful and global consideration of the inherent structural complications for correctly understanding the cuprate Fermiology and its microscopic implication.

Investigation of the spin-glass regime between the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases in Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_x$Te$_{1-x}$

Using bulk magnetization along with elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, we have investigated the phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$ and the nature of magnetic correlations in three nonsuperconducting samples of Fe$_{1.01}$Se$_{0.1}$Te$_{0.9}$, Fe$_{1.01}$Se$_{0.15}$Te$_{0.85}$ and Fe$_{1.02}$Se$_{0.3}$Te$_{0.7}$. A cusp and hysteresis in the temperature dependence of the magnetization for the $x=0.15$ and 0.3 samples indicates spin-glass (SG) ordering below $T_{\rm sg} = 23$K. Neutron scattering measurements indicate that the spin-glass behavior is associated with short-range spin density wave (SDW) ordering characterized by a static component and a low-energy dynamic component with a characteristic incommensurate wave vector of ${\bf Q}_m = (0.46, 0, 0.50)$ and an anisotropy gap of $\sim$ 2.5 meV. Our high ${\bf Q}$-resolution data also show that the systems undergo a glassy structural distortion that coincides with the short-range SDW order.

Charge excitations associated with charge stripe order in the 214-type nickelate and superconducting cuprate

Charge excitations were studied for stipe-ordered 214 compounds, La$_{5/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$NiO$_{4}$ and 1/8-doped La$_{2}$(Ba, Sr)$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in hard x-ray regime. We have observed charge excitations at the energy transfer of 1 eV with the momentum transfer corresponding to the charge stripe spatial period both for the diagonal (nikelate) and parallel (cuprates) stripes. These new excitations can be interpreted as a collective stripe excitation or charge excitonic mode to a stripe-related in-gap state.

NMR study on the local structure in La-based high-Tc cuprates

To date, there has been no evidence for the macroscopic structural phase transition to the low temperature tetragonal structure (LTT) with a space group P42/ncm in high-TC cuprate of rare earth-free La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO). By investigating Cu-NMR on single crystals, we have found that spatially incoherent LTT structure emerges below 50 K in the sample with x=0.12. This incoherent structure is considered to play a key role for the slight depression of the superconductivity around x=1/8.

Electron-phonon anomaly related to charge stripes: static stripe phase versus optimally-doped superconducting La1.85Sr0.15CuO4

Inelastic neutron scattering was used to study the Cu-O bond-stretching vibrations in optimally doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 (Tc = 35 K) and in two other cuprates showing static stripe order at low temperatures, i.e. La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4 and La1.875Ba0.125CuO4. All three compounds exhibit a very similar phonon anomaly, which is not predicted by conventional band theory. It is argued that the phonon anomaly reflects a coupling to charge inhomogeneities in the form of stripes, which remain dynamic in superconducting La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 down to the lowest temperatures. These results show that the phonon effect indicating stripe formation is not restricted to a narrow region of the phase diagram around the so-called 1/8 anomaly but occurs in optimally doped samples as well.
