Photon-Jet cross sections in Deep-Inelastic Scattering

We present the complete next-to-leading order calculation of isolated prompt photon production in association with a jet in deep-inelastic scattering. The calculation involves, direct, resolved and fragmentation contributions. It is shown that defining the transverse momenta in the proton virtual-photon frame (CM*), as usually done, or in the laboratory frame (LAB), as done in some experiments, is not equivalent and leads to important differences concerning the perturbative approach. In fact, using the latter frame may preclude, under certain conditions, the calculation of the next-to-leading order correction to the important resolved component. A comparaison with the latest ZEUS data is performed and good agreement is found in the perturbatively stable regions.

Deep inelastic scattering and forward neutral pion production at NLO

We present a detailed phenomenological study of forward hadron neutral pion production in deep inelastic scattering, with both the direct and the resolved contributions calculated to NLO accuracy. A comparison of the theoretical predictions for the various distributions with the H1 data and a study of stability of the QCD predictions under changes of scales is the focus of this study. We obtain a very good overall description of the recent H1 data with the choice of scale Q^2 + E^2_{perp}, in contrast to the (Q^2 + E^2_{perp})/2 required earlier when the resolved contribution was included only at LO accuracy. We find a more modest variation of the predictions, as the scale is changed from (Q^2 + E^2_{perp})/2 to 2(Q^2 + E^2_{perp}), as compared to the case where the resolved contribution was included only at LO accuracy. This variation is of the order of the rather large experimental errors. Unfortunately, this fact prevents us from concluding that perturbation theory gives an unambiguous prediction for forward particle production in deep inelastic scattering. However, the overall success of perturbative QCD in explaining the small x_{Bj} data means that perhaps a full resummation of the BFKL ladder is not called for. We notice the need for rather large resolved contributions to explain the data at low x_{Bj} even at somewhat larger Q^2 values.

Is a Large Intrinsic k_T Needed to Describe Photon + Jet Photoproduction at HERA?

We study the photoproduction of an isolated photon and a jet based on a code of partonic event generator type which includes the full set of next-to-leading order corrections. We compare our results to a recent ZEUS analysis in which an effective k_T of the incoming partons has been determined. We find that no additional intrinsic k_T is needed to describe the data.

NLO Monte-Carlo approach in 1 or 2 jets Photoproduction

We present a method for calculating the photoproduction of jets at HERA based on Next to Leading Logarithm QCD calculations. It is implemented in a Monte-Carlo generator which allows us to easily compute any infra-red safe cross sections for 1 or 2 jet observables using various jet reconstruction algorithms. We focus on the possibility of extracting the gluon contents of the photon and of the proton from present and future H1 and ZEUS data.

Large-p_T Inclusive pi^0 Cross Sections and Next-to-Leading-Order QCD Predictions

We review the phenomenology of pi^0 production at large transverse momentum in proton-induced collisions. Uncertainties in the next-to-leading-order predictions of Quantum Chromodynamics are discussed. The comparison with data reveals that the disagreement between theory and experiment lies essentially in an overall normalization factor. The situation for pi^0 production is contrasted with that of prompt-photon production in hadronic collisions.

A critical phenomenological study of inclusive photon production in hadronic collisions

We discuss fixed target and ISR inclusive photon production and attempt a comparison between theory and experiments. The dependence of the theoretical predictions on the structure functions, and on the renormalization and factorization scales is investigated. The main result of this study is that the data cannot be simultaneously fitted with a single set of scales and structure functions. On the other hand, there is no need for an additional intrinsic $k_{_T}$ to force the agreement between QCD predictions and experiments, with the possible exception of one data set. Since the data cover almost overlapping kinematical ranges this raises the question of consistency among data sets. A comparative discussion of some possible sources of experimental uncertainties is sketched.

Factorization and soft-gluon divergences in isolated-photon cross sections

We study the production of isolated photons in $e^+e^-$ annihilation and give the proof of the all-order factorization of the collinear singularities. These singularities are absorbed in the standard fragmentation functions of partons into a photon, while the effects of the isolation are consistently included in the short-distance cross section. We compute this cross section at order $\as$ and show that it contains large double logarithms of the isolation parameters. We explain the physical origin of these logarithms and discuss the possibility to resum them to all orders in $\as$.

Quarks and Gluon Fragmentation Functions into Photons

The fragmentation functions of quarks and gluons into photons are studied beyond the Leading Logarithm approximation. We address the nature of the initial conditions of the evolution equation solutions and study problems related to factorization scheme invariance. The possibility of measuring these distributions in LEP experiments is discussed, and a comparison with existing data is made.

A Parton Shower Model for Hadronic Two-Photon Process in e^+e^- Scatterings

A new model of QCD parton shower is proposed which is dedicated to two-photon process in $e^+ e^-$ scattering. When hadron jets are produced, the photon may resolve into quark-antiquark pairs so that the structure functions of the photon should be introduced. Based on the Altarelli-Parisi equation for these functions, an algorithm is formulated that allows us to construct a model for parton showers for the photon. Our model consists of two parts, one of which describes the deep inelastic scattering of the photon and the other one the scattering of two quasi-real photons. Using the model some results are presented on parton distributions and jet production.

Parton Distributions in the Photon

We discuss in detail the photon structure function beyond the leading logarithm approximation. Of special concern is the factorization scheme and the hadronic input; we show how to naturally absorb large terms due to the MSbar factorization scheme in a modified hadronic component. The effect of the charm quark mass threshold is also discussed in relation to the phenomenology. A comparison with data shows that the modified hadronic component can be reasonably described by a VDM-type input.
