Ion-momentum imaging of dissociative electron attachment dynamics in acetylene

We present experimental results for dissociative electron attachment to acetylene near the 3 eV 2Πg^2Π_g resonance. In particular, we use an ion-momentum imaging technique to investigate the dissociation channel leading to C2_2H−^- fragments. From our measured ion-momentum results we extract fragment kinetic energy and angular distributions. We directly observe a significant dissociation bending dynamic associated with the formation of the transitory negative ion. In modeling this bending dynamic with \emph{ab initio} electronic structure and fixed-nuclei scattering calculations we obtain good agreement with the experiment.

X-ray emission measurements following charge exchange between C6+^{6+} and H2_2

Lyman x-ray spectra following charge exchange between C6+^{6+} and H2_2 are presented for collision velocities between 400 and 2300 km/s (1--30 keV/amu). Spectra were measured by a microcalorimeter x-ray detector capable of fully resolving the C VI Lyman series emission lines though Lyman-δδ. The ratios of the measured emission lines are sensitive to the angular momentum ll-states populated during charge exchange and are used to gauge the effectiveness of different ll-distribution models in predicting Lyman emission due to charge exchange. At low velocities, we observe that both single electron capture and double capture autoionization contribute to Lyman emission and that a statistical ll-distribution best describes the measured line ratios. At higher velocities single electron capture dominates with the ll-distribution peaked at the maximum ll.
